I took pictures of one of the torn window screens:
Torn Window Screen - Taken from Outside |
This is the window in the family room. The torn area was originally at the bottom of the screen, torn by Dancer and one of the garden cats, trying to play with each other! When I moaned to M that I could no longer open this window (the only one in the family room) because of the tear, he turned it upside down for me, so that the tear was towards the top. That enabled me to open this window, last summer. Here is the same screen, taken from inside:

A lot of the windows had screens that looked like this! When it got really bad, I just removed the screen, but, that meant I couldn't open that window!
"A" spent the next two hours making and installing the new screens.
Here is the same window, after the new screen was put in:

Yes, I know, I'm all excited about my new window screens! I've lived with the torn window screens for about 5 years, now, if not longer. I just didn't have someone to do the work and felt overwhelmed at the thought of looking for a handyman. Neighbor T did give me the name and phone number of her handyman, but, still, it was easier to put up with the inconvenience of being unable to open windows than call people, get estimates, etc., etc., etc.
Before he left, "A" fixed the laundry room door for me - it is a pocket door that slides in and out of the wall, on a track, just like a sliding closet door. One of the sliding attachments on the top had come off and I wasn't able to fix it (I did try). I was still able to slide the door to open and close, but it hung a bit crooked because it was off the track and it was just one more thing that was not working as it should. It now glides smoothly, just as it should! Yay! One more task crossed off the To Do List!
"A" is going to call me, tomorrow morning, to give me an estimate on some of the plumbing work I have for him. He will also fix another cabinet door for me (my neighbor E had told me, once, that he will fix it for me, but, he has been unable to do so; time to get it done by someone else).
This morning, I made milk rice and seeni sambol, which is like a spicy version of caramelized onions, for breakfast, I also ate some of the pineapple guavas I picked this morning. Afterwards, I did the dishes and wiped down the stove top and the inside of the microwave. I also cleaned both bathrooms. I am waiting for a second wind to dust the bedroom and vacuum!
Today, I am grateful for:
- The monks referring A to me
- New window screens
- The laudry room door being fixed
- A sunny fall day
- Another couple of items crossed of the Mile Long To Do List*
Wednesday's To Do List:
- Dust my bedroom
- Vacuum
- Clean the bathrooms - DONE
*The last Mile Long To Do List I posted was back in February. I will be updating it, soon.
How is your Wednesday coming along?

Screened windows - one of the things I like about America lol. I miss them when I go back to England. I don't like a lot of bugs in the house so I don't think I'd open the windows much without screens and I love having the windows open. I'm glad you got them fixed!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have them when I was growing up, either, and I really think there should have been! Thank you; I am so glad I finally got this much needed repair done!
Deleterepairs, replacements, and renovations ...oh my!! you may feel you are in a new house- getting around to the unexciting bits and pieces is great isn't it ... it always makes me wonder why i continue to put things off ('saggy' door on one of my kitchen cabinets, I am speaking to you)- it looks like you will have things in tip-top order soon-
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy your 'picture stroll' through your yard the other day- it's interesting to see how different areas of this country face such varied problems ... you work through heat and restricted water use, and here we have heat and humidity (during a lot of the year) but an excess of rain so we look for plants and flowers that can stand soggy roots and flooding rains-(I'm in the part of east Texas that abuts the swamps of Louisiana)-
as always, fondest thoughts to you from here-
Barb
I know! I am already feeling euphoric about the new garage door and window screens! I know why I procrastinated. I was overwhelmed by the thought of getting started! I didn't know who to call to get the work done. I got some referrals from my neighbors, but, a couple of times, I trusted a friend or a neighbor's recommendations and got burnt. The whole process of calling people, getting estimates, etc., was overwhelming to me. That's why I am so happy that the monks highly recommended A, who lives next to the temple and is known to the monks.
DeleteThe micro climates we all have is what makes our gardens so different. That, and the gardener's possession of a green thumb or not! LOL. I am very good at killing my plants!
Hope all is well with you and yours, Barb. Take care, and I hope you'll get "saggy" straightened up, soon! :D
We had holey or missing screens when we moved into this house that prevented us from opening many of the windows. Now we have good screens on all of the windows and it's so nice to open any window when we feel like it and not worry about bugs or cats. Enjoy your new window freedom. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Live and Learn. I had several windows open, yesterday, and it felt so nice. Looking forward to the summer, when I can open all the windows to have some air circulation!
DeleteI wish we had window screens here
ReplyDeleteThey are great for keeping out insects and keeping in house cats! At least until the said house cat tries to claw them to shreds!
DeleteI am catching up with your blog having been very busy with social engagements and sightseeing. I loved the garden photos. It is exciting that you are getting these jobs done. It seems like you are returning to normal, with the mountain quilt done as well.
ReplyDeleteToday we have been visiting ancient churches built in rock, and a ruined Christian medieval village on top of a high rock. Lots of steps and uneven paths so my walking poles were great to keep me upright! I'm thankful that I can get around such places and travel still.
Thank you, Bushlady. I am so happy and excited to get these jobs crossed off my list! It's my birthday present to myself! :)
DeleteSounds like you are having a wonderful time, visiting different places! I'm so glad you are able to travel and get about without too much difficulty. Have fun and be safe, too. :)
It is so hard to find someone who is capable, affordable and willing to do household repairs. Not to mention the trust factor of having a stranger into your home.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you have found someone that ticks of those boxes. I can tell by your posts how tickled you are to have these things fixed.
Did he fix your sliding door too? You mentioned that along with your pocket door you need it fixed too. Or did you mention it and I forgot? Lol
I can see you now sitting there feeling the nice breeze blowing through your new screens.
Yes, I was unable to do anything until I found someone I could trust, not to mention affordable and capable. I am so glad I am able to get these things attended to at long last. A lot of them are small things, but, together, they made for a very sad looking house!
DeleteNo, the sliding glass door hasn't been fixed yet. I need to buy a wheel for it. In the meantime, regular spraying with WD40 is keeping the door sliding! :D The pocket door was an easier fix because I had found the nut and bolt that fell off and kept it.
Your screens are lovely! I’m sure it makes you smile each time you look through your windows or drive up to your home and see them. So happy for you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carolyn. It does make me happy to see the new screens - the torn ones were so sad looking and gave the house such a look of neglect. No matter how much I dusted and vacuumed, the house itself was looking shabby and well beyond the "shabby chic" stage!
