New Sweater |
Yesterday, I finished the sweater I was making. It had been one of my "works in progress" for a long time.
I can't remember quite when I bought the yarn, but, it was sometime in the 1980s! I bought this yarn, along with some other yarn, on clearance; the regular price was $.99, but I paid $.50 per 2 oz. ball of yarn:

For some reason, I didn't choose to knit anything with it after I bought it. It was in my yarn stash, all those years, while I bought and knitted with other yarn. However, when I wanted something to knit during chemo sessions, I dug into my stash and pulled out this yarn. I wanted some mindless knitting, so the plain stockinette stitch front and the back were ideal. I could knit for as long as I pleased and put it away without having to keep track of where I stopped, unlike with knitting a pattern where keeping a row count is important. But, sleeves required some calculations, so I put the knitting aside after I did the body. It stayed in the "works in progress" bin, until recently, when I started doing the sleeves.
Yesterday, I tidied it up, wove in all the ends of yarn, hand washed it, and laid it flat to dry. It dried overnight and I wore it, today:

Today, I am grateful for:
- My yarn stash
- Knowing how to knit
- A new sweater
- M bringing me new plants for the garden
- A working security light (M replaced the bulbs for me)
Today's joyful activity was wearing my new sweater!
That’s a very nice sweater.
ReplyDeleteIs it cold over there now? It’s still very warm here, and I’m waiting for cooler weather.
It's been cold enough for me to turn on the heater, in the evening, the past two evenings. I was cold, even while wearing socks, a blouse, a wool sweater a wool cardigan, and a scarf! Today has been warmer and I might not need to turn on the heater. I can't take the cold, at all, anymore!
Deletereally pretty- like many/most knitters, I have a stash of yarn that has definitely become quite vintage-seeing the 'then and now' prices on it can be a real shock- I just located a few skeins of a long long outdated Classic Elite boucle yarn with a few rows of a sweater started in a child's size 2 (pattern was folded up in one of the ball bands)- it was started for one of my daughters as a toddler ... that daughter now has grown children! sigh ...
ReplyDeletethe usual good thoughts your way- have a great weekend-
Barb
Thank you, Barb. Well, maybe you can unravel what you've knitted of the baby sweater and make something else - a scarf, perhaps? It can be a Christmas gift to the daughter whose sweater it was going to be! Or, you could finish the sweater and keep it for a future great-grandchild!
DeleteThe good thoughts are reciprocated, Barb. Have a blessed weekend.
Nice sweater. I am glad you finished it.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am happy to have finished it. I have too many "works in progress"!
DeleteLovely sweater, it suits you. Was that the oldest project in your work in progress bin?
ReplyDeleteIt was probably the oldest yarn I had in my yarn bin! I used to feel guilty every time I saw that yarn, because I had bought it and not used it!
DeleteI need to start working on another "oldie" - it's an extension to a blanket I knitted, which I had finished; it used to fit my old, twin bed just fine, but is a bit too short for my queen sized bed. I need to attach the extension to the blanket.
How lovely, the mix of colors is really classy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susanne. I used to have a green and black plaid wool skirt, back then, and I might have bought this yarn thinking it would make a good top to go with that skirt. Of course, I no longer have the skirt! But the sweater will go with any black skirt or pair of pants, so, I'm OK! :D
DeleteAnother beautiful sweater. It must feel good to be finishing up projects that have been lingering for a while. Do you have many more that you want to finish?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Live and Learn. Yes, it feels good to finish up another work in progress. I am constantly starting new projects without finishing the old ones! Yes, I have at least two other works in progress I want to finish. One is the hexagon Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt - I've reached the boring and cumbersome stage of attaching the last few flowers to the quilt. The other is attaching an extension to a blanket I had knitted, to make it big enough to cover my queen sized bed. Then, there is a rag rug I started to crochet, although I just might give up on that!
DeleteLove the sweater. Wow, the price of the yarn. The good old days. I know you will be warm. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susie. I generally buy yarn when it is on clearance or I have a good coupon, these days. :)
DeleteThe 1980s!!! That's even worse than the cardigan which I started in 1993 and have yet to finish! I have at least got the bag down from the top shelf in my dressing room and the intention is to complete it over the Christmas holidays.....though I am not sure it will fit me any more :(
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope your cardigan will fit! If not, maybe you can give it to your daughter? I'd love to see a picture of it when you've completed it. :)
DeleteYour sweater came out so nice. The color is really pretty. It must feel good to get this project off the needles. Just in time to keep you warm with the change in temperatures.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debra. Yes, it's good to have it completed...now, I can move on to something else without feeling guilty about all the works in progress! :D
DeleteIt’s pretty
ReplyDeleteThank you, Akasha. :)
DeleteAnother lovely sweater to keep you warm and attractive!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. One can never have too many hand knitted sweaters, right? :)
DeleteIt's lovely. I really like the yarn.
ReplyDeleteIn my last post Lily is modelling the jumper I made her during the summer. I should really try and make time to knit more. Maybe these dark evenings will be the opportunity I need. X
Thank you, Jules. I noticed that pretty pink sweater/jumper (we used to call it a jersey when I was growing up) that she was wearing! It looked very warm and pretty. Yes, you should knit more! Winter evenings are the best time to knit; it can be very relaxing, I think. Looking forward to seeing your next project. :)
