A New Door on Monday

New Garage Side Door

On Monday morning, the phone rang.  It was "A", the handyman!  Did I still want to replace the garage side door?  Yes!  When?  Whenever he could do it!  He said he'll be here in 20 minutes!  I told him I thought he had forgotten about me, but, he said he had been busy with other work.

He came over, remeasured everything, asked me for an advance of part of the money to buy the materials, bought a new door and frame, and spent the next several hours removing the old door and frame and putting in the new door.  It took a little longer than anticipated because he needed to remove and replace the outer most strip of the old framing that had been set into the stucco, as that was rotting at the bottom.  He used some leftover pieces of molding I had in the garage, instead of having me buy more strips of wood, to fashion a new frame and inserted that into the groove in the stucco.

Afterwards, he cut up the old door (it was warped and deteriorated and there was a hole at the bottom), put it all in the recycling bin, and took the bins to the curb for me.

He was still here, working around lunch time (about 1:00 p.m.) so, I offered him some lunch.  At first, he politely declined, but, I said I had rice and curries and he said OK.  He thanked me for the lunch and said I was a good cook!  LOL.  I was happy I had cooked on Sunday!

Once he finished with the side door, I had him measure my windows for new wire mesh screens.  The existing screens had deteriorated over the years and I've had to toss some of them and the rest are torn or tearing.  Even the aluminum frames have deteriorated.  He quoted what I considered to be a very reasonable price to replace them (not that I've had any other quotes!).  I've been wanting to replace the screens for several years, now and hadn't because I didn't know whom to ask!  I'll be able to open more windows, next summer, without worrying about Dancer jumping out!  Not to mention the house won't look so shabby with torn screens in the windows.  Maybe I can do a little window cleaning, too, at the same time.

A also told me that if I get the wheel for the sliding glass door, he'll fix that too, as well as the laundry room pocket door which has come off its tracks!  He is supposed to call me in the morning to let me know when he can come to start the work.  However, I won't worry too much if he doesn't call for a few days.

After he left, I made a quick trip to the post office to mail my gas bill payment.  Then, I did a load of laundry and swept the kitchen and bathroom.  It's not the house cleaning I had planned to do on Monday, but, that's OK.

On Monday, I was grateful for:
- Dancer seemed fine after having thrown up, the night before
- "A" called and showed up!
- The new side door
- The prospect of new screens for the windows
- Being able to offer him lunch

  1. Hi Bless, You sound very in the flow. That's great that you got such an excellent price on window screens. I am having all of my windows replaced this month. Today I watered the garden, hiked a section of the Pacific Crest Trail with Lula, and did some banking. Yesterday I mopped the floors and cleaned some if the kitchen appliances.

    1. Thank you, Stephenie. I had considered replacing the windows, but, decided to settle for the new screens, instead. Sounds like you are busy! Hope all is going well with you and Lula. I am assuming she has recovered from being attacked by those dogs?

  2. It's always so nice to get some long needed repairs done. Now that you mention it, we have a door on our garage that is need of some serious attention. However, it's not on the top of the list right now.

    1. It's been a couple of very good days, Debra! I've been putting up with a lot of broken/non-working things in my house for several years. I am hoping that I will be able to get quite a few of them (if not all) attended to over the next few weeks. :)

  4. Another job crossed off the list always makes for peace of mind. It sounds like you've found a good handyman there. X

  5. What a blessing to have the handyman call and be available for work. It is just so hard to get good people scheduled these days.

    1. It truly was a blessing, Susanne. I guess he's quite busy and I am on a waiting list of clients he gets to as time permits. I am OK with that, now that I know he will call when he is able to fit me in. :)
