Rainy Wednesday

It rained in the morning, today.  I am thankful for the rain as we need it and it means I don't have to water the garden, this week.  More rain is expected for tomorrow, as well.

The rain ceased by noon and, in the afternoon, we had sunshine, although there were rain clouds in the horizon.

I went to the fabric store in the afternoon.  But, the advertised fabric, Country Classics solids (regular price $5.99/yd., on sale for $1.79/yd) did not offer much of a selection when it came to the available colors and amounts of fabric.  They had lots of shades of yellow, one bolt of grey, one dark blue with less than 2 yards of fabric on the bolt, a dark brown (again with not much fabric left on the bolt), and a beige.  I considered the beige (I guess one could call it ecru, if one wanted to be fancy) and thought it would be OK.  It is a nice, neutral color and would help to tone down the bright colors of the quilt top.  However, when I went to the fabric cutting counter to have them measure out 5 yards, the bolt was full of short lengths of fabric, 1 to 2 yards in length.  So, I didn't buy it.

The same store is advertising a different type of fabric, Symphony Broadcloth solids (regular price $4.99/yd., on sale for 50% off, today, but, $1.99/yd. on Saturday and Sunday), and, if you get there before noon on Saturday, there is an extra 25% off entire purchase coupon, too!  Guess what I plan to do on Saturday, morning!  LOL.  I checked out the colors they have and, again, not much of a choice, but, there was a medium blue shade which might do for the quilt border.  Of course, I am taking a chance by waiting until Saturday, but, that's what I will do.

I didn't come away empty-handed from the store, however!  They were having a sale on yarn and I bought three skeins of yard for $2.50 each (regular price $3.99), in a color called "Dark Orchid" to knit a cardigan for my friend who requested one.  I asked her what color she wanted and she said, "A nice color", and, when I pressed her further, "A bright color", which left it open to interpretation!  But, purple is one of my favorite colors, so, that's what I chose!  I figured that, if she doesn't like it, she can give it back to me!  LOL!

Yarn for a Cardigan

My total came to $8.21:

I am not planning to start knitting this cardigan until after the holidays are over.  It will not be a holiday gift.  That would be too stressful.  But, I have the yarn on hand, now, for when I do start knitting.

After I came home, I had a cup of tea and then, I made corn bread:

Corn Bread

A double batch in the larger baking dish to take to Aunt T's, tomorrow, and a single batch for us to enjoy at home.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The rain we had this morning
- The sunshine in the afternoon
- Yarn on sale
- Freshly baked cornbread
- Holiday traditions

Today's joyful activities include baking cornbread and watching the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving specials on TV with my daughter, which has become a holiday tradition.

Plans for tomorrow consist of going to friend A's house to Thanksgiving lunch and to aunt T's house to dinner!  I need to look up driving directions from A's house to aunt's house because I took the wrong freeway, last year, and ended up taking a long, circuitous route.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.  May your day be filled with family, friends, and much for which to be thankful.

  1. I haven't watched Charlie Brown in years. I'm off to look for my childhood annual now. Happy memories.
That share of yarn is beautiful. Your friend is sure to love the cardigan so I wouldn't fancy your chances at it being handed back. 😃
A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Bless. Xx

    1. I hope you are able to watch Charlie Brown, Jules. We are looking forward to watching the Christmas one, next month. That's always a favorite.

Well, I guess I can always buy myself more yarn in that shade and knit myself something!

Thank you, Jules. I've lots for which to be thankful and family and friends, including blog friends, are among them. :) Hope all is well with you and your loved ones.

  3. Happy Thanksgiving Bless.

I love the colour you have chosen for your friend's cardigan. It was a shame about the fabric but at least you can have another look on Saturday.

I hope you enjoy your meals with friends and family ... the cornbread looks very moorish. I love it but it doesn't like me unfortunately, though I have never tried making my own. Is it hard to make?

    1. Thank you for all the good wishes, Eileen.

Yes, a shame about the fabric. I even looked online to see if they had some other colors to order (they could ship to the store free of charge and I could pick it up; I've done that once before with quilt batting), but, none of the colors I picked were available for shipping! I am starting to wonder if they are going to discontinue this line of fabric and go with another line that they have, which is all cotton and more expensive.

Cornbread isn't hard to make. I follow the recipe on the side of the box, which is for cornbread muffins, which is a slightly sweeter version of their recipe for the bread - stir together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal, 2/3 c. sugar, 1 tbsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt in a big bowl; mix together, in another bowl, 2 eggs, slightly beaten, 1 1/4 c. milk, 1/4 c. oil and 6 tbsp. butter or margarine, melted. Then, add the wet mixture to the flour mixture, stir until just combined, pour into a greased baking dish. Ha, ha, I've practically memorized the recipe! The recipe called for a 400F oven for 20-30 mins. or until a toothpick inserted into the bread comes out clean, but, my oven tends to run hot, so I baked them at 350F for about 25 mins. I let them stay in the warm oven until the top turned a golden brown, as that's how I like my cornbread to appear. I can't eat a lot of cornbread at a time as the baking powder causes some discomfort, but, everyone else seems to have no problem with it!

  5. I watched a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving last night with my husband. It was the first time for us to watch it and think it will become a tradition for us, too.

    1. Oh, good! We enjoy watching it. Yesterday, we were laughing about the rotary phones they are shown using - kids these days won't know what they are! Or, why the kids are shown riding in the vehicle without any seat belts! We were also commenting on the fact that Franklin is shown sitting all by himself on one side of the table while many of the others were crowded on the other side.

  6. You’re making me want to bargain shop at Joanns.

    1. It's the only fabric store in my area, although, there are many fabric stores, in downtown in the so-called "Garment District". Joann's usually has good sales and that's when I buy my fabric.

  7. Orchid is a lovely colour so I think your friend should be pleased. It's years since I bought fabric but as a teenager I was at the local market buying a fabric remnant almost every Saturday, spending some of my pay from my Saturday job. Sunday would be spent making something that would be worn to work (or out in the evening) the following week,

    1. Thank you, Eloise. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she'll like the color. Sounds like you were an accomplished seamstress! I am not very good with sewing clothes. That was my mother's talent. She could sew anything and sewed all our clothes.

    1. It was a good bargain on the yarn, wasn't it? Yes, I've had a lovely Thanksgiving day with family and friends. It was raining, here, too! Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one.

  9. Sorry about the fabric! You're really brave going on Saturday - sometimes when places have those big sales people go crazy. I remember going to the fabric shop with my MIL and the queue was halfway around the shop! Good idea to check out the colours so you know what they do have available - good luck!

    1. Thanks, Sharon. I am hoping the store won't be too crowded. I tried to get the colors I want from their online site, to have it shipped to the store, but, all the colors I liked were not available for shipping! I think they are going to discontinue that line of fabric. Anyway, I'll see what I can find and take it from there. This quilt might end up with a yellow border as that seems to be what is available!
