June Grocery Shopping - Part 2

On Wednesday, I bought some groceries for the second time this month.  My previous grocery pick up had been at the beginning of the month, on June 3.

Here's what I bought on Wednesday (sorry, no picture because I was in a bit of a rush to get everything put away):

Groceries (food items)

2 cucumbers, $0.79@ = $1.58
1 lettuce, reg. price $1.99, with $0.40 off coupon = $1.59

(After I submitted the order, I realized that I had forgotten to order green beans and broccoli, but, it was too late to alter the order.  Daughter brought home a cabbage she had, so we will cook that, instead, and I'll order green beans and broccoli next week)

4 bananas, 1.51 lb. @ $0.68/lb = $1.04
2.21 lb. red cherries, reg. price $5.99/lb., on sale this week @ $2.49'lb. = $5.51

4.5 lb. chicken thighs, reg. price $2.49, on sale @$0.99/lb. = $4.46
0.59 lb. salmon, reg. price $15.99, on sale with coupon for $7.44/lb. = $4.39
(I had ordered 1 lb., but, they gave me a much smaller piece!)
3 cans tuna in water, 5 oz@, reg. price $1.29@; on sale with coupon @$1.12 = $3.37

1/2 gal. milk = $2.79
1/2 gal. half & half = $5.49

1 can pasta sauce, 24 oz. = $1.89

1 box pancake mix, 32 oz., reg price $3.29, on sale with coupon = $2.84

1 bottle pancake syrup, 24 fl. oz. = $3.29

1 box cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds) 12 oz. reg. price $4.29, free with coupon = $0

1 box (16 oz.) saltine crackers = $2.49
(I ordered store brand and they substituted a more expensive brand name for the same price)

1 loaf white bread, 20 oz. = $1.99
8 hamburger buns, reg. price $1.79 (on sale for 4th of July) = $0.99
8 hot dog buns, reg. price $1.79 (on sale for 4th of July) = $0.99

2 bags tortilla chips, 9.25 oz., reg. price $6.29@, $1.99 @ with multi-buy deal = $3.98
2 bags potato chips, 8 oz., reg. price $4.99@, $1.99 @ with same multi-buy deal = $3.98

2 tubs ice cream (pistachio & butter pecan) 14 fl. oz. @, reg price $5.99@, on sale B1G1 = $5.99

Total for groceries (food items) = $58.65

In addition, I bought these following non-food items:

1 toothpaste (4 oz.), reg. price $2.79, on sale with coupon = $2.00,

8 bars soap, 3.7 oz. @, reg. price $7.99, on sale with coupon = $6.99

1 pair latex gloves = $2.49

Sales tax on non-food items = $1.11

Total for non-food items = $12.59

My total came to $71.24 for everything.

According to the receipt, my original order total = $119.77
Amount I saved due to sales and coupons = $49.64

I had $82.29 left in my June grocery budget and I spent $58.65 on this grocery shopping order.

Balance remaining in the June grocery budget = $82.29 - $58.65 = $23.64

I don't anticipate going grocery shopping again, during the remaining three days of this month, but, if I do, I have $23.64 to spend.  If not, I will carry it forward to July.

How are you doing with your June grocery budget?

  1. You did well with your savings and a free box of cereal too. Shame they only sent a small piece of salmon as I know you like to treat your daughter to some when she visits. You did well with the ice cream, pistachio & butter pecan sounds delicious. I don't budget as such but my weekly bill usually stays around the same amount although higher than it was say a year ago but sadly that's the same for everyone.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. Yes, I'm pleased with my savings. I was disappointed to receive a smaller piece of salmon, though, as I had planned to have at least two meals with salmon. Oh, well, that's the downside of not shopping in person, I guess.
That's wonderful that you are able to keep you weekly bill to about the same, even if prices have increased. :)

  2. We are doing better with our June food budget because we are not eating out as much. :)

    1. Yes, eating out can be costly! It is nice to do so as a treat, though. :) I generally don't eat out when I am on my own, but, I might get some take out when my daughter visits.

  3. You got some nice deals on the fresh fruit and vegetables, chicken, and salmon. The bread and buns were great prices too and I imagine they will last you awhile.
I will grocery shop today before daughter’s visit. Boneless chicken breast is on sale for $1.99# and the same for London broil and pork ribs. I’m planning to get all 3, stocking up on the chicken breasts because they’re a real staple here. I especially like to have them cooked and ready to eat on salads. We’ll buy fruits and vegetables, but don’t need much else. I had a potato spoil so I boiled the rest and made potato salad, then shuffled the meal plan a little.
Our grocery budget this month (and the whole summer) will continue to be lower than usual due to so much travel. We’ll spend more to eat during these months, but it will be budgeted differently. 😊

    1. Thank you, Taconix. Chicken breast is on sale for $1.99 here, too, but, it has the ribs attached, so not boneless. That is a great price for London broil! I'd definitely stock up on that! It's selling at $7.99# over here, currently!
I like how you budget. I used to have a separate budget for eating out, but, I don't eat out much these days, except when my daughter is visiting and we get take out, so I incorporated my eating out budget to my grocery budget. :)

  4. I need to fine tune my monthly budget again. I splurged and bought a lavender candle today.

    1. I'm sure you will enjoy the lavender candle in the days and weeks to come. Sometimes, we all need the lift that a scented candle or other splurge item brings us.
Well, July is a new month and you can start fine tuning your budget. :)

  5. We had cucumbers at 44c each last week and I bought 2. I didn't notice the price yesterday as I still had one cucumber left!

    1. That's a very good price for cucumbers! I hope you continue to find them at a good price during the rest of the summer. :)

    1. Hi Ash, I have a monthly grocery budget of $100 for food items only (does not include household items, paper goods, health and beauty products, pet food, etc.) I check the store's weekly specials (in my area, new prices go into effect on Wednesdays, usually), and plan my grocery shopping accordingly. I usually buy items that are on sale that week and stock up when there is a good deal. I plan the week's meals based on what I've bought and what I have in my pantry and freezer. I rarely buy anything that is regular price, although, I will splurge on something, every now and then, if it is on sale. :)

  7. Some good prices. Don't think I've seen that price for lettuce for a LOOONG time lol. Not sure why a lettuce is so expensive. When I'm back in England I always tell my sister how much they are and she can't believe it.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. It was a good price for a lettuce, wasn't it? It sounds like groceries are cheaper in the UK than they are here!
