| June Groceries Part 1 |
I put in an order for groceries on Sunday and picked up the items in the afternoon. I was out of a few things and I wanted to take advantage of this week's deals before they ended on Tuesday. Included in the picture above are the two boxes of granola bars that I purchased from the drug store, yesterday, as they are part of my grocery shopping for the month.
I bought:
18 eggs, reg. price $5.89, on sale with digital coupon = $2.99
(1 doz. was selling for the regular price of $3.99)
1 tray (4.47 lb.) chicken thighs and drumsticks ("picnic pack") on sale still for $0.99/lb. = $4.43
3 cans tuna in water, $1.29@ with $0.50 off 3 cans coupon = $3.87
2 packs cold cuts, reg. price $6.49@, on sale with digital coupon $3.49@ = $6.98
2 bananas (0.66 lb.@ $0.69/lb) = $0.46
Grapes (2.26 lb. @ $1.79/lb. with digital coupon; reg. price $4.49/lb.) = $4.05
1 bottle, 52 fl.oz. orange juice = $4.69 (+ $0.10 deposit) = $4.79
1 iceberg lettuce = $2.19
1 jar, 24 oz. sweet pickle relish, reg. price $3.49 = $2.99
1 jar, 30 oz. Miracle Whip = $6.79! (Ouch!*)
1 loaf bread = $1.79
1/2 gal. milk = $2.79
Yogurt, 32 oz., reg. price $4.79, with $0.95 off coupon = $3.84
Grocery subtotal = $47.96 - $5 off coupon = $42.96
+ 2 boxes granola bars, $1.99@ = $3.98
Groceries Total = $46.94
*I have been watching the price of Miracle Whip, hoping it would go on sale, maybe for Memorial Day, but, so far, it hasn't gone on sale and I am out of MW. I don't like mayonnaise and I don't like the taste of the store brand version of MW (I have tried it). It might go on sale for 4th of July, and I debated waiting until then, but, I do enjoy having egg salad and tuna salad on a regular basis. I decided that the $5 off $50 purchase coupon will offset some of the cost of the MW.
In addition to the groceries, I also bought some household items (as part of my quarterly household items stock up), which I don't count as groceries :
3 boxes facial tissues, $1.69@ (reg. price $1.79) = $5.07
1 box sandwich bags, 180 count = $5.49
1 pair latex gloves = $2.49
Sales tax on non-food items = $1.13
Total for non-food items + tax = $14.18

Sunday's brunch was leftover milkrice and chicken curry. Dinner was cold cuts sandwiches.
Since it will already be Monday when I publish this post (which I started writing on Sunday!), I will go ahead and make a tentative meal plan for the week, as well.
June Week 1 Meal Plan:
Brunches: Leftover milkrice and chicken curry, leftover waffles with bananas and blueberries, cold cuts sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, maybe even cereal and milk! LOL!
Dinners:
- Chutney glazed chicken drumsticks, salad, corn
- Chicken curry with rice, green beans, cucumber salad
- Pizza
- Cold cuts sandwiches (on a day when I don't have them for brunch!)
- Leftovers
Snacks/desserts: yogurt, fruit, crackers, granola bars

I am pleased to see you buy cage free eggs and chicken, me too I will only buy free range eggs, I hate to think of the life caged birds live. We can buy those Nature Valley oats and honey bars here, £3 for 20 at the moment I looked as am about to place an order today. They're not on offer but it says low every day price. You have a healthy budget left for your June shopping.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eileen; I'd like to take the credit for buying the cage free eggs, but, I can't! The State of California passed a law back in 2018 that was approved by the voters that all eggs sold in store in California have to be cage free from January 2022. The law also included space requirements for other livestock, including calves raised for veal and sows. Of course, the price of veal (which I don't buy) and pork (which I do buy) went up practically overnight, when the law passed. Cage-free, however, doesn't mean free range, over here, at least. Cage-free means the chicken are kept in a barn-type setting while free-range means they have access to the outdoors (although, as far as I know, there are no minimum requirements as to how much access to the outdoors, at least in the US; it might be different in the UK). Free range eggs are selling for $6.99/doz. at the store, currently, with a $2 off coupon (which would bring the price down to $4.99). Which is doable. Now, if only Chicken Little would lay me an egg once or twice a week - I'm watching it happily strutting about my garden, even as I type this!
DeleteThe price of your granola bars seem very reasonable to me, especially if that's the everyday price. As of this afternoon, the exchange rate is $1.28 to £1 so your package of 20 would cost $3.84. The package of 20 bars were not included on the sale at the drug store, but, it was definitely more than $3.84!
Good shopping! That’s a great buy on eggs. At least the cost-per-serving is pretty modest on Miracle Whip, even when it’s not on sale. I am not grocery shopping this week. We’re leaving Wednesday for a wedding in Colorado, so I’m trying to finish anything that won’t last until we get home. Your menu plan looks good. Mine will definitely be fusion style for a couple of days. 😊

DeleteI was amused to see that my store was selling loose bananas at 39c each or 3 for $1.17. (they also sell a bag full for $2.).

Yes, according to the store website, one banana is about $0.27 each, although they price them by the pound. I can't buy more than 2 or 3 bananas at a time because they ripen so quickly and I don't like very ripe bananas.

You got a great deal on the eggs! Yes, the price of condiments is outrageous now! I can remember years ago when I could get them for less than a dollar with a good coupon. I sure miss the days of cheaper groceries!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mandy. Got to take advantage of the sales as and when they occur! I can go for weeks without using condiments like mayo (or Miracle Whip in this case) or ketchup, but, I always want to have some on hand!
DeleteI've tried to do the conversions from $ to £ and it seems a lot of foods are cheaper here. I made sure to eat up the fresh food, and a lot of the freezer stuff before our holiday, and did a huge shop on my return. But I planned it very carefully with coupons and offers - and reduced the bill by more than 10%
ReplyDeleteYes, our food prices are high, especially here, in California. I try to shop the sales and take advantage of coupons, etc. You did well, reducing your grocery bill by more than 10%! Well done!
DeleteI know you like a cold cut sandwich once in a while so that was a good sale for you. And you got a good price on those eggs. And, yes, let's apply that $5 coupon directly to the Miracle Whip and call it $1.79. What a bargain! :)

Yes, I do enjoy a cold cuts sandwich, although, not enough to pay full price for the cold cuts. :) And the eggs were a good price. I see lots of scrambled eggs, egg salad sandwiches, and omelet curry in my future! LOL, the Miracle Whip WAS a bargain at $1.79, wasn't it? :D The store was offering an $8 off $80 purchase in a single transaction, too, but, I was happy with the $5 off $50. Thank you; I've kept to the meal plan for the first 2 days of the week! LOL.
