On the First Day of October

New Flower Arrangement

It's a mostly cloudy day with a high of 69F (20C), but, there's some afternoon sunshine which cheers me up.  In any case, I love the start of a new month as it seems like a new beginning.

I picked three roses in the morning and placed two of them at the two altars and this bud on the living room mantlepiece.  Looking at the picture, I'm thinking the stem of the rose is a bit too long, but, I am too lazy to cut it down!

As is my custom, I made milkrice in the morning and ate some of it with chicken curry and seeni sambol (spicy onion relish).  I struggled to open the can of coconut milk for the milkrice, today; for some reason, the can opener would not pierce the can and I was getting really frustrated, especially since Dancer was meowing loudly the whole time, thinking I was opening a can of tuna for him!  I did open a can of tuna for him, earlier, but, he decided he didn't want that particular can of tuna, today!  In the end, I resorted to using a large knife and hammer to open the can!  Not the safest way to open a can, but, it got the job done!  I've added a new can opener to my shopping list!

I also lit a stick of incense and blessed the house as part of my first of the month rituals.  My house is old and needs some repairs and renovations, the rooms are a bit messy, the decor is dated, and the furniture is falling apart, but, the house still stands and provides me shelter and place to call my home.

"New" Side Table

This is the space where I had kept the tea trolley.  When I moved it to be the new temporary dining table, I needed a place to keep the phone and the box of tissues.  I kept them on a kitchen stool that I have floating around (I rarely use it in the kitchen), but, later, decided I needed a slightly larger side table for them.  So, I placed a glass top saved from an old side table and we have an instant side table!  LOL.  The glass is quite heavy and it will stay in place on the stool, as long as there is no really heavy item on one of the corners to tip it over.

I have the glass top from the matching coffee table, too - I've used it to make a temporary coffee table during almsgivings, etc.  Maybe I should buy two more kitchen stools or bar stools and place that coffee table top on them to make a new dining table!  Not sure how sturdy that would be, though!

Today, I am grateful for:

- The afternoon sunshine
- Roses from the garden
- The start of a new month
- An emails and e-cards from family and a friend
- My home and garden

Today's joyful activities included picking roses from the garden and monthly rituals.

  1. I once "opened" a jar of vinegar by using a power drill to make a hole through the plastic screw top! A knife and hammer is probably a little bit safer, or maybe not! Your rose bouquet is very lovely.

    1. A power drill is a good option for plastic tops! Not sure how that would have worked with a metal can! Not that my knife and hammer was a good option, either!
Thank you; I'm glad to have roses in October. :)

  2. Oops, the power drill comment was from me, Celie. I cleared cookies and can't seem to sign back in. I'll figure it out eventually!

    1. Thank you, Celie; I did wonder who it was! Hope you can figure out how to sign back in! Apparently, one can also open a can with a spoon, by rubbing it back and forth until it wears down the metal in that one spot. I think my knife and hammer trick was faster!

  3. I'm finding I'm having trouble unscrewing bottle tops now but that's just me being weak. Using a large knife and hammer sounds quite dangerous to me so I'm glad to know you will be ordering a new can opener. Be careful your temporary table doesn't tip over as that has happened to me too and quite recently!

    1. I have trouble opening bottles and jars, myself, Eileen. My grip strength is not what it used to be. I find that using a rubber glove or slipping a rubber band over the edge of the bottle top helps.
Yes, I will get a new can opener when I next order groceries.
Oh, I do hope the temporary side table doesn't tip over! At least not until I can get a new dining table and put the tea trolley back in that corner.

  5. There's a emergency can opener attachment on the Leatherman Multi Tool in our workshop. Never had to use it though (yet)

    1. Oh, that's a good thing to have! I wish I had one of those really old can openers that we used to have when I was growing up - you punctured a hole in the can with it and levered it up and down to cut around the can. No moving parts to wear out!

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. I've decided that I really need a bigger table than the tea trolley, but, it will do for now. I will be buying a new can opener this week. I watched a video about how to open a can with a spoon, but, I don't think I'd manage to do that!

  7. That's being innovative using an old glass top on the kitchen stool for a table top. Is it heavy enough that it won't tip if Dancer is on the edge of it?

    1. Thank you, June. I'm not sure if it will hold Dancer's weight, but, he doesn't jump up on the furniture any more. He'll get on the coffee table with a bit of effort as that is low enough for him to do so. I thought of getting some velcro and attaching the glass top to the stool to provide a better grip. Hopefully, Dancer will not jump on the temporary side table, until I buy the velcro!

  8. You may be aware of some things you would like to do to your house, but it always looks so lovely and welcoming in the photos - a real home!

    1. Oh, thank you, Bushlady. That's so kind of you to say so. Of course, I don't always show the bits that need fixing! :D

  9. Definitely not the safest way to open a can, not that I would not resort to the same if I were desperate.

    1. No, not the safest way, but, you have to give me points for being resourceful! :D In hindsight, I should have opened the box of coconut milk powder that I have for emergencies!

  10. Your rose is lovely on your mantle to welcome in the new month.
I'm glad you were finally able to get the coconut milk opened. Things like that can be so frustrating especially with Dancer making a bit of a racket.
I needed a new can opener a couple years ago and couldn't find one that worked easily. So strange but they were hard to work. Maybe it was just a sign of getting older but I never had a problem before.
I did finally find one and we were back in business. I hope you easily replace yours.

    1. Thank you, Debra. The rose bud has opened up and still looks fresh.
I think it is the can and not the can opener that is causing the problem! I was able to open a can of tuna for Dancer without any difficulty with the "faulty" can opener. But, the can of coconut milk might be made from a thicker metal or the edge of the can is a bit higher? It seems like the cutting edge of the can opener doesn't quite pierce the can. Or, it could just be my grip strength, which isn't what it used to be. Anyway, I have a new can opener on my list of things to buy.
