What's Missing From This Picture? |
If you said, "A dining table", you'd be correct!
When I wrote, "Clear the small dining table" on my to do list, last night, this is not quite what I meant to do:
The Now Discarded Dining Table |
This morning, I cleared off all the items that were on the small dining table in the family room. I had been doing some paperwork there and I had a box of files to be put away in the new filing cabinet that I had got from neighbor T and a box of miscellaneous bits and pieces to be put way. I put the files away, put the basket of current papers to be read (insurance and local elections related brochures and the current bills) away on the small shelf unit, and put away the bits and pieces that were in the box. Then, I wiped down the top of the table.
The Poor Table |
I will ask M to help me break it up, although I'm wondering if I can use those legs or the table top for something! Maybe I can build a new frame with some proper wood and attach the legs to it to support the table top!
I guess I will be looking for another small dining table. I don't have to have one - there's the big dining table in the more formal dining area, but, there is a ceiling light fixture hanging down where the table used to be in the family room and it seems weird to not have a table there!
In the meantime, I moved the old tea trolley/cart that I kept in the corner of the family room (had been using it as a side table for one of the sofas and storing my canning jars on the shelf underneath, which is actually a removable tray) and put it under the light fixture to act as a temporary table! With the two drop leaves raised, there's room for three chairs:
New Temporary Table |
Table Set with Treats |
I told neighbor S that many of my blog readers wish they could have a neighbor like her and she laughed.
Treats Both Healthy and Not So Healthy! |
- One less horizontal surface to keep clear!
- Managing to get the old table out by myself
That is too bad about your table. Maybe it could be repaired, though that might be a lot of work? The cart makes a lovely substitute, though. Neighbor S certainly does bring you some good looking food!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. I suppose it could be fixed by someone who knows how to fix furniture, but, I'm not sure if M or I could manage to do it. The cart will do for now, but, I'll be looking for a new dining set.
DeleteI had one of the pastries with a cup of tea in the evening and had some of the sour cream dessert after dinner! Both were delicious!
Oh no! Although I suppose it was preferable that it broke then, rather than when there was something on top of it.
ReplyDeleteI think the replacement works well. Xx
Yes, I'm glad the leg broke when it did and not when there were things on it. The replacement isn't ideal, but, I do have a large folding table in the garage - maybe I'll ask M to bring it in for me and set it up. If I cover it with a table cloth, it would work.
DeleteOh no to breaking your table, that's what I call a calamity. Your tea trolley looks alright as it is with a tablecloth and laden with treats from your lovely neighbour.I hope you find a nice suitable replacement table to match your chairs.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly wasn't what I meant to do, Eileen! I tried to fix something and made it worse! The tea trolley is not idea, but, it'll do for now. I also have a folding table in the garage that I might ask M to bring in which might work. In the meantime, I am looking at dining tables online and trying to decide just how much I want to spend!
DeleteIf the top is in good condition, it would not be difficult to attach new legs. Places like ikea sell them, fairly inexpensive. Or if you sent us the tickets, I could pop over with Bob for an afternoon and fix it...
ReplyDeleteActually, I was thinking to myself that if Bob and you lived close by, I could have asked if Bob could fix the table for me! LOL. The legs themselves are OK; it's the side strips that made the frame for the legs and to which the top of the table was attached that broke. Someone who knows a bit of woodworking could probably fix the table without any trouble, but, I don't have the proper equipment or the knowledge to do so. I could make do and bring in one of the folding tables from the garage and use that as a table. Or, buy a new table. Still trying to decide!
DeleteToo bad about your table, but the tea cart looks like it works well. I'd use it for awhile before I'd look for a new table. You may like even better.
ReplyDeleteThank you, June. The tea cart is a temporary solution, but, it'll do until I buy a new dining table. Or, decide if I want to bring in a folding table from the garage and cover it with a table cloth. That might work out quite nicely, actually.
DeleteI wonder if that tea trolley might be valuable today with that inlaid design! That would account for it being expensive even back when you bought it secondhand. Too bad about the table but I see your chairs look sturdy. Many chairs on sale today don't have the cross pieces underneath, I've noticed.
ReplyDeleteI doubt if the tea trolley is worth much now, Bushlady. One of my colleagues dealt with antiques and I showed him a photo of the trolley shortly after I purchased it. He was more interested in my step-grandmother's tea set that I had stored on the bottom shelf than in the trolley, itself! LOL.
DeleteYes, the chairs are quite sturdy. The main dining table chairs don't have the cross pieces and one or two of them are a bit wobbly and I try to tighten the screws every so often.
Oh gosh, that's too bad about your table. I'm glad you were able to handle it without too much drama.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow-declutterer, I am voting for not keeping any of the bits and pieces hahaha
You seem to have come up with an appropriate work around with your pretty tea cart.
I love how you got it all dressed up for your blog readers:)
What a tasty looking batch of food from neighbor S.
I know; I really liked that table, too. But, I guess it was time for a change?
DeleteLOL, the bits and pieces included the plug in headphones I used when the neighbors had their last party, some pens and pencils I had corralled together, a pair of scissors, a notebook, etc. They were all the items I had sitting out on my side table, which I dumped into a container when I was cleaning the side table. I put them away in better places (the scissors with the rest of the items in the sewing basket, the notebook with other notebooks, etc.) The only item I tossed was the old laptop charger, which was replaced.
I should've said "the broken bits and pieces"( from the table.) lol.
ReplyDeleteAlthough seeing another post, I see you made good use of a glass top from a previous table. I would end up keeping the legs, etc thinking I would use them and then I never would. They would hang around for a dozen years and then I would get rid of them. hahaha
Oh, yes, I see. Well, M seems to think the table can be repaired - at least, he's going to try, so, I'll keep the table parts for now. If he can't repair, then, I will get rid of the pieces...if I can't do something with the legs! I made the mistake of looking on Pinterest! :D
