The Last Sunday of Summer

"You woke me up from my nap to tell me that?"

It feel like fall, already!  Today's high was only 72F (our normal temperature for this time is 86F).  It was cloudy and overcast most of the day with just a little sunshine during the afternoon.

I took a walk around the garden in the early afternoon and the roses are enjoying the milder temperatures:

The last rose of summer?

Maybe not:

The Pink Roses

I walked up and down the drive way a few times.  I am starting back from square one, again, with my walking after my recent hip pains.  It isn't painful to walk now, unlike earlier, but, there is still some soreness in my hip, so I am taking it very easy, gradually increasing the number of times I walk up and down.

Construction workers were busy with the renovations, next door - they seem to be working seven days a week!  I tried to speak with two of the construction workers who were standing outside and talking, but, while they smiled and nodded, they didn't speak English.  So we waved at each other and I continued to walk for a bit more while they continued with their conversation.  Later in the evening, former neighbor T called for our weekly Sunday chat and I mentioned that the new neighbors haven't move in yet, but, they were doing some renovations.  She said she wouldn't be surprised if they broke down some walls to make the rooms a bit bigger.

Brunch was two more pancakes with the last of the mackerel curry.  I was going to cook some rice for dinner, but, neighbor S called and brought me some cheese burek from a bakery (a bread version, as opposed to puff pastry), a cup of rice pudding her sister-in-law had made, and a gata (cookie) from a birthday celebration at her Church.

Sunday Dinner Compliments of S

Not the best picture; sorry.  Here's another picture of the burek:

Cheese Burek

S told me to warm it up before eating, as she had kept it in the fridge.  I did and it was very tasty.  There were two pieces of burek and I kept the other one in the fridge for next week.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Late summer roses
- Afternoon sunshine
- Dinner compliments of neighbor S
- Being able to walk again without experiencing pain at every step
- Phone calls and emails from friends

Today's joyful activities included being in the garden and enjoying the dinner that S brought me.

Plans for tomorrow (Monday), include doing a load of laundry, some housework, some paperwork, and some reading.

How was your weekend?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. I'm glad you find walking easier now but don't overdo it. That's a shame you couldn't find out what work was being done in the new neighbour's house, I expect T is right that they may be knocking down walls as open plan living seems to be the modern way. Your kind neighbour S bringing you more treats, how lucky you are. I had a calamity on my day out on Saturday, I've blogged about it, luckily I was not harmed.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; I'm taking it really easy, honest! Just a few times up and down the driveway and it's not a long driveway, either. I plan to slowly increase the number of times.
From what I've seen, so far, they've put some recessed ceiling lights in the bedrooms and new lights outside in the front (and there's wiring in place for at least two more light fixtures at the back), and they've made a new doorway leading to their driveway and they might have closed off one of the doors that led to the backyard. I'm wondering if they are remodeling the kitchen, because I can hear a lot of sawing and hammering. :)

Yes, S is so kind and considerate! Seems like she's always bringing me food! I do appreciate it very much.

I have just read about your day out on Saturday and what happened with the hot coffee! You are very fortunate that you didn't get scalded! I do hope that you enjoyed the earlier part of the day!

  2. Roses are such beautiful flowers. Do you have problems with mildew which seems to plague most varieties?

    1. Yes, sometimes, when the weather is wet, I get mildew on my roses. But, most of the time, it's too dry and mildew is not a problem.

  3. If the photo challenge had a "cat"egory called "indignation", the photo of Dancer would be ideal. Perhaps he feels that S should be sending over tuna for him as well as treats for you!

  4. I've never heard of a burek before, so I had to look it up. It sounds delicious, and it was very kind of your neighbour to share it with you.
I'm glad you can now walk without too much discomfort. Remember to take things slowly and don't overdo it. Xx

  6. The burek looks really good and you didn't need to cook your rice and figure out what to have.
I am curious what kind of improvements they are making next door.
Hopefully your new neighbors will invite you in and you can report back lol
Those pink roses are such a nice color.

    1. The burek was very good.
They have broken down the back wall of the dining room and opened it out, closed one of the back doors, put a bank of windows there, and opened a new doorway on the side, leading to the driveway, put a patio structure like mine at the back and, a sort of metal structure at the very back, which they've partially covered with a shade cloth draped over it - I'm trying to figure out what that is supposed to be! I had M peek over the wall, today, when he was pruning back the plumbago plant that was going over the wall and he reported that they've planted roses, a citrus tree, and some other plants, too! I'd love to go over and take a look once the new owners have moved in - maybe they'll invite me in?
