A Sunny Sunday

Cookbook Collection

I took this photo of my cookbook collection as a "before" picture, thinking I might declutter some of the books.  They take up about 15 inches on a 24 inches wide bookshelf, which, I suppose isn't too bad for a collection of cookbooks.  Several years ago, I used to belong to a "cookbook of the month club" and I bought quite a few cookbooks and had at least two 3-ft. wide shelves crammed full with cookbooks.  Over the years, I decluttered them until I thinned them down to what is pictured above (the white folder has a few recipes I've cut out from magazines and one or two handwritten ones).  My collection includes a notebook in which my mother handwrote some recipes (the book with the blue spine) and several notebooks in which a 17 year old me hand-copied recipes from a printed cookbook that my mother had, which she gave away before we left Sri Lanka (she later told me that if she had known I'd wanted the recipes, she would have kept the book; she bought me a replacement book on a return visit to Sri Lanka, but, it was a newer edition and some of the recipes had been "updated" and weren't the same.)  I keep thinking that a lot of these recipes can be found online, and I pulled out three of the books, thinking I might donate them, but, then, I put them all back again!  Decluttering books is like pulling teeth, for me!

We had sunshine, today, and the daytime high did go up to 77F (which is still quite cool for this time of the year; last year, we had a record setting 107F on Sept. 3).  But, it was nice and comfortable, not too hot, not too cold.

Maybe I did a bit too much, yesterday, cooking the beef smore, because my hip was a little painful when I woke up.  I considered taking a Tylenol, but, over the course of the day, the pain eased somewhat, so, I didn't take anything.  I've been trying to drink more water and that is helping, I think.  My goal is to drink 8 cups of water and I've drunk 7 cups, so far (10:00 p.m.); I am sure I'll be able to drink the last cup when I take my medications before I go to bed.  This amount of hydration does not include the two cups of tea I drank.

I took the trash and the bag of recycling out to the bins in the morning and I walked just once up and down the driveway and along the sidewalk in front of my house, just to keep the joints moving!  I noticed several vehicles parked on the front yard of the house next door and I could hear the voices of people working on the house.  I believe they are construction workers and not necessarily the owners of the house.  They seem to be doing quite a few renovations.

I spent the majority of the afternoon on the living room sofa, resting my hip, reading blogs, watching online videos, playing Sudoku, etc.  And attending to Dancer!  Since yesterday, he's back to not liking any of the food I've been offering him; he takes a couple of bites and then, walks away and two minutes later, he's meowing at me again!  And it is such a sad sounding meow!  Then, I get up off the sofa and offer him something else.  As a result, he has his personal buffet spread out for him with separate bowls of three flavors of cat food and some tuna.  There are two kinds of kibble, too!  His water bowl is full and so is the bucket he likes to drink from!  And still he kept meowing.  Eventually, I figured out what he wanted - tuna from a freshly opened can, not the last bits from a can that was opened two days ago!  He is such a spoiled kitty!  He's due for his arthritis injection, too - I need to call the vet's office on Tuesday (Monday being a holiday, Labor Day, the vet's clinic will be closed) to schedule that.  The garden cats (Mama Cat and her admirer who visits from time to time, a fully black cat I call Black Jack) aren't quite as fussy and they will eat the opened cans of cat food that Dancer won't eat and whatever the garden cats don't eat, the possums will eat.

In the evening, my hip felt much better and I did a little bit of tidying up and putting away.  I finally put away the new yarn in the yarn bin which is now full, again, and I cleaned the glass top of the family room coffee table.  I also ran the cleaning cycle on the washing machine as that light has been coming on the last couple of times I did laundry.

Brunch was leftover milkrice with mackerel curry.  Dinner was some of the beef smore with bread.  I had some yogurt for dessert, afterwards.

Today, I am grateful for:

- A sunny day and pleasant temperatures
- Being able to rest as needed
- The hip pain getting better, as the day progressed
- The few tidying/putting away tasks I managed to do
- Emails from friends

Today's joyful activity was relaxing in the afternoon sunshine coming through the window and watching online videos.

Tomorrow is a holiday, but, I'm not planning any Labor Day celebrations.  I'd like to get a little more tidying done, depending on how I am feeling.

What are your plans for Monday?  Is it a holiday where you are?

  1. I agree you should keep your cook books. I decluttered bagfuls of books a few years ago but it never occurred to me that cook books should go not that I do much cooking but yours you should keep especially with your mother's handwriting in. Dancer certainly has you wrapped round is paws, he is the master and you are his servant :-) I'm glad your hip pain is getting better but do remember your promise to your daughter and don't overdo things.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; I don't often cook from the recipes in the books, but, it's nice to have them on hand to refer to them when needed.
Oh, Dancer is definitely the master of the household! LOL! He's sleeping cuddled up next to me on the sofa, right now, as I type this. :)
Yes, my daughter made me promise her again that I won't overdo things! She said to leave the messes be until next week so she doesn't have to stress about me! I promised her I'll take it easy!

  2. Quite the opposite of holiday here - school term starts this week, so the family have returned to London. It will take at least a week to get the house straight (and find the Legobricks randomly secreted in odd places) Dr told Bob he should reduce his coffee intake 2 weeks ago. We both feel better for that, it has definitely improved our sleep. I had three Martha Stewart cookbooks, but decluttered them. And I bought the red&white Better Homes one as a gift for my daughter when we visited the USA 20 years ago. Decluttering cookbooks is hard!

    1. Some schools have already started, here, and others will start on Tuesday, after the Labor Day holiday. It always takes time to put the house back in order after family visits, doesn't it? Glad to hear that reducing the coffee intake is having some good effects; I rarely drink coffee, these days, but, I drink up to two cups of tea a day. Yes, it's hard to declutter cookbooks. :)

  3. Decluttering books, and especially cookbooks, is just the hardest thing to do isn't it. Sometimes I have been known to donate them to a charity shop and then go and buy them back after a change of heart. I am hanging on to all of mine for the foreseeable future.

Our cat Ginger is being very fussy with his food just recently, when we first fostered him he would only touch a brand called SciencePlan (very expensive and just dried pellets) and wouldn't eat ANY other food even actual fish or chicken. I think we spoilt him by gradually introducing him to new things and now years later he's here, there and everywhere with what he likes at any given time.

    1. Yes, decluttering books is difficult! I have taken things back from the donations pile and put them on the shelves, but, I haven't yet bought any back from the charity shop! :D
Dancer, too, used to eat mainly dry food with the occasional treat of tuna or canned cat food. But, he's 15 years old and recently, lost nearly half his weight (went from being 15+ lbs. to just 8 lbs.) so, I am trying to give him whatever he is willing to eat, to get his weight back up a bit.

  4. I have more cookbooks than you, even though I have decluttered some within the last year. For now, I have the space, so they will stay. With all of these cookbooks, you'd think I'd like to cook more than I do. :)

    1. June, I like your way of thinking - for now, you have the space, so they will stay. Maybe that's why decluttering my books tend to be so difficult for me - for now, I have the space for them! It's just that I keep wondering, just how many books do I need to keep? I think it would be easier for me to declutter if I needed to downsize! I remember you saying, "Choose what you want to keep"; I'm trying to do that. The cookbooks are there for inspiration, for when you do feel like cooking! :D

  6. Cookbooks are so hard to decluttter. I think I'll take a photo of mine too. I had almost all the Ina Garten ones and they are so pretty but I never made anything out of them. I did a post a few years ago of' cooking thru my cookbooks' where if I made something out of one I could keep it, otherwise I donated it. I did get rid of a lot:)

    1. Your cooking through your cookbooks challenge sounds good! A couple of these cookbooks are my "go to" cookbooks, mostly when I'm baking. But, there are a couple of books that I haven't tried out a recipe; maybe I will challenge myself to make one recipe from each of my collection of cookbooks!

  7. I have so many cookbooks, most with photos. I don't often use them, but I do enjoy browsing through the food photos and recipes. I find it relaxing! Most are of foreign food: Indian, Chinese, Brazilian, Mexican, Lebanese, etc. I do like cookbooks!
I'm glad your hip is a little better. Keep resting it. Dancer just can't make up his mind!

    1. Oh, I do enjoy looking through recipes and the photos! I might not make the dishes, but, looking through the photos can be a delight (and fewer calories, too! :D)
Dancer is just a spoiled cat, but, he's old and I'm indulging him because of it. :)

  8. I used to have "The Joy of Cooking", it was what I turned to when we were given a couple of wild ducks by a neighbour who had been hunting. I haven't prepared a duck since! You don't seem to have too many books. I have around the same number and I also have a binder in which I have saved certain recipes so that I don't have to look them up. I also have some recipe cards, most of which are never used, and I still have cuttings and scraps of handwritten recipes that I should reduce or file!

    1. The Joy of Cooking is a wonderful "how to" book, isn't it? The print is so tiny that I have a hard time reading it, but, I'm keeping it! I keep a few handwritten recipe cards (using index cards) for baked goods I make all the time - my favorite basic muffin recipe, banana bread recipe, etc., in the old mixing bowl in which I keep some of my baking supplies, such as the baking powder, baking soda, measuring cups and spoons, etc. Having those recipes written out means I don't have to pull out the books each time!

  9. I think that's an admirable amount of cookbooks. I used to have a lot of cook books but I too have decluttered mine over the last few years.
I would say my amount is similar to yours plus I have a binder similar in size to your white one.
A couple years ago the library was having their sale and one cart was full of wonderful large hardback current cookbooks for $2 each. I resisted. BUT
I still think about some of the books on that cart lol :)
Dancer is so funny with his dining preferences. To the benefit of Mama Cat and now Black Jack. I don't remember Black Jack being mentioned before. So, he's not a stray just a visitor? I think we need a picture.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Well done resisting the cookbooks at the library sale! I still remember, fondly, some of the cookbooks I decluttered. :)
Dancer is back on tuna, these days. He only likes a newly opened can so I am having lots of tuna salad! LOL.
Black Jack has been around for a few years. He's quite handsome, but, he runs away from me!

  10. I was relieved to read that Dancer was simply being fussy and not that he was unwell. Cats are funny aren't they. X

    1. Yes, he was being fussy; he definitely knows what he wants when it comes to eating and I'm catering to him because he's lost so much weight. He becomes very vocal when he doesn't get what he wants and that gets to me! I read recently that a cat's meow triggers the same receptors in a woman's brain as that of a new born baby's cries!
