September Grocery Shopping - Part 1

I put in an order for groceries, earlier this afternoon, and picked up the items, later in the afternoon.  I mostly wanted more cans of tuna to share with Dancer, who ate almost all the cans I had bought for myself because he didn't want his canned cat food!  But, there is only a 19 cents (14 cents, with coupon) difference in price between his 3 oz. can of cat food ($1) and a 5 oz. can of store brand tuna ($1.19/$1.14 with coupon) and, at this point in time, I'm happy to buy him whatever he will eat!  In addition to the tuna for him, I got a few items for myself, too.  Ricky brought the items to the car and loaded up everything; I was assured that everything I ordered was there, even before I could ask, and that there were no substitutions.  LOL.

I bought:

2 lb. bag frozen breaded butterflied shrimp, reg. price $15.99, on sale with digital coupon = $7.59

2 lb. bag whole carrots = $1.89

1 container vanilla ice cream, 48 fl. oz., on sale with digital coupon = $2.99

2 bananas (0.81 lbs. @ $0.65/lb.) = $0.53

1 loaf sandwich bread = $1.79

2 lb. brown sugar = $2.49

Bag fee = $0.10

Total for groceries for me = $17.38

Plus 12 cans (5 oz. @) tuna in water, reg. price $1.19, $1.14 @ with $.50 coupon* = $13.78

* coupon was for $.50 off the purchase of 3 cans of tuna

In addition to the groceries for me and tuna for Dancer, I bought two fly swatters (twin pack) because my old fly swatter broke = $2.99 plus $0.29 tax.

My September grocery budget (for food for me, only; does not include Dancer's food or household items) is $100 + $36.12 carried over from August = $136.12.

Spent so far in September = $17.38

Balance left in the September grocery budget = $136.12 - $17.38 = $118.74

The frozen breaded shrimp was a special treat as it works out to under $4/lb. for the shrimp.  After I came home, I fried some of the shrimp and enjoyed them for a late lunch, with some of my tomato chutney as a dipping sauce.  It was delicious!

Dancer is better, today, but, still recovering from the sedation.  I'll do a separate post about him and our day, today.

  1. I think Ricky must be taking extra care making sure all your items are ready for collection, maybe Jennifer had a word with him :)
That was a good saving on your shrimp You are doing very well with your budget especially as we are half way through the month already.

    1. Yes, I think Ricky is making sure that everything is there! Maybe Jennifer said something or, maybe, he has got a bit more experience, now. :)
I was very pleased with the sale on the shrimp! I will buy it again, if they go on sale at that price, again. A bit of a splurge, but, cheaper than going out to eat, I think, or, even, getting take away.
I am happy with my grocery spending; I don't think I'll need to get more groceries until the end of the month, unless there is a really good sale on something I need or want. I've plenty of food in the freezer, so, I'll be eating from the freezer for the next couple of weeks.

  2. I never thought to fry the frozen breaded shrimp. It's funny you should mention this item. A month or so ago they were on a deep discount at my store. I've never bought shrimp this way before -I usually only buy the frozen raw shrimp) but a lady on a youtube video I watch often has them and they always look good. I thought, with them on sale, I'd give them a go.
I didn't care for them. But I baked them and the breading was mushy and really detracted from the shrimp.
If I see them on sale again I might try your method.

You're off to a good start for the month with your grocery shopping.
It's funny how the people tuna is about the same price as the cat food isn't it?

    1. The instructions on the bag of breaded shrimp did say that baking in the oven was the preferred method, and I do bake things like breaded fish fillets, but, I thought that fried would be quicker and easier. They fried up nice and crispy. I would certainly buy them again, provided they were on sale! Not sure if I'd pay full price...maybe for a special treat.

Thank you! I can see myself carrying more grocery money into October! Or, maybe I'll set it aside towards the winter heating bill!

Yes, there's not much of a price difference between the store brand tuna and the cat food I've been getting for Dancer, which is not the cheapest brand, but, neither is it the most expensive! Which is ridiculous in my opinion.
