The Garden in September

The Front Garden on September 21, 2023

Time for another garden post, as I try to capture the changes in the garden from month to month, on or around the 20th of each month.

The Succulents Border

Some of the succulents are getting a bit "leggy" and while it adds some height interest, it's probably time to clean up this area a bit.

Succulents Circle

The succulents in the circle are doing well and the jacaranda seedling planted in the middle is growing well, too.  I am hoping that it will flower, next spring.

Succulents Along the Side Wall

The succulents we planted earlier in the summer along the side wall are coming along nicely.  They haven't grown much, but, they haven't died, either!

Osteospermum

We still have some osteospermum flowers, here and there.  But, the star of the front garden right now is the lantana:

Spot the White Butterfly!

And a look at the garden from the other side:

Ready to take a look at the back garden?

The Back Garden

Eenie, the butternut squash plant, is trying to reach the house!

Meenie and Minie, the Zucchini Sisters
(And Mama Cat hiding under them!)

Mama Cat is not the only thing hiding under those big leaves!

Potential Baby Zucchini!

I tried to give Mother Nature a helping hand, earlier in the week, and tried to pollinate the female zucchini flower; I'm hoping it worked!  There is also another female zucchini flower bud to the viewer's right in the picture!

There are a few other flowers besides the squash flowers in the back garden:

Gazanias

Sedum

And, of course, roses!

Thank you for visiting my garden in September.  I hope you enjoyed the tour!

  1. Your gardens are lovely! The lantana in front and plumbago in back are gorgeous. The squash sure are growing! I tried to find Mama Cat, but she's very well hidden.

    1. Thank you, Celie. Yes, Mama Cat is well concealed! I should have parted the leaves and taken a picture of her hiding, but, I didn't think to do so at the time.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; the cooler weather seems to agree with the garden! I wish I had parted the zucchini leaves to take a picture of Mama Cat! Maybe tomorrow.

  4. So many beautiful flowers and plants to see in your gardens! At this time ours is looking rather tired, but we do have a huge sedum plant with masses of flowers.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. My sedum is a small plant, still, grown from a cutting that M gave me, earlier this year. He said the parent plant is a big plant grown in a large container; I want to add this sedum to the collection of succulents in the front garden, eventually.

    1. Thank you, Jules. The butternut squash vine is just inches away from the bottom step to the back door! But, it has a female flower and I am hoping there will be a squash to harvest!

  6. Your garden looks really wonderful. What a nice year it's had with rain and somewhat cooler temperatures. You are right about the Lantana being the star of the garden this month. It's such a beautiful color.
The succulent wall?- so the wall is against the party house and your house is to the left?
That is funny how the squash vine is coming towards your house. They are something when they take over and ramble here and there.
I hope you get some zucchini!

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, the succulents wall is the wall I share with the party neighbors. It runs along their driveway (where they park their RVs and put up tents) and my side yard. From the point of view the picture was taken (sidewalk in front of my house), my house is on the left of the wall.
I took a photo of the squash vine this morning. It's reached the pavers in front of my steps - give it another week or so and it will reach the first step! LOL.
