Mid Week on Wednesday

A New Flower Arrangement!

Gardener M brought me two different types of gardenias from his garden!  The yellow one was drooping and I stuck them in my blue and white teapot without doing anything much, but, I think it doesn't need any further arranging, do you?  They do smell lovely!

While M watered the garden and did some pruning, I picked green beans and a single ripe cherry tomato:

Today's Harvest

I think I'll tweak the meal plan to include curried sauteed green beans (bonchi thel dala) for tonight's dinner!

I wasn't kidding earlier, when I said that the squash vine is trying to reach the house!

"Eenie" the Butternut Squash Vine

It has reached the pavers in front of the back steps!

Eenie gets a tendril hold on the pavers!

This was the butternut squash flower five days ago, on Friday, September 22:

Here it is today, Wednesday, September 27:

A Baby Butternut Squash - 9/27/23

The flower has fallen off and we have a baby butternut squash about the size and shape of a small light bulb! Woo hoo!  This is the first time I'm growing butternut squash and I am all excited about it!  The weather is nice and warm, right now, but, it is supposed to cool down again by the weekend.  I hope it doesn't get too cold for the squash.  Mama Cat has taken to sitting right next to the squash and I am hoping she will not sit on it and squash my baby squash!  LOL!  So far, it is the only butternut squash, but, I've two baby zucchinis, each about 4 inches long.  I'm hoping they'll grow to about 6 inches to harvest them!

Today, I am grateful for:

- Another sunny and warm day (82F right now at 3:00 p.m.; a high of 85F according to the forecast; I just love this weather!)
- Flowers from M's garden
- M's help with the garden
- Today's harvest of green beans from the garden
- Baby squashes!

Today's joyful activities include doing another flower arrangement, picking beans from the garden, and watching my squashes grow!

How is your Wednesday coming along?

  1. Maybe Mama Cat is protecting the squash from Chicken Little pecking at it! The gardenias are lovely. That is a really good bean harvest. Curried green beans sounds very good.

    1. Celie, you are probably right! I didn't even think about Chicken Little! I think I might have to put the chicken wire back in place! I had removed it to accommodate the squash vine that is now trying to climb the steps!

    1. Isn't it cute? It's my first time growing butternut squash so I'm thrilled!
Yes, apparently, there are yellow gardenias! M has several different varieties of gardenias in his garden and every so often, he'll bring me some flowers to admire!

  3. That's a good bunch of green beans I'm sure they will taste delicious. The flowers in the blue teapot look lovely and I wish I could smell them :) What a difference a week makes with your baby butternut squash I'm so pleased for you, I do hope Mama Cat gives it a wide berth.

    1. I was very pleased with today's green bean harvest! I cooked them, along with the last of the potatoes I had dug up, earlier, and had them with rice and chicken curry for dinner. There's a bit leftover for tomorrow, too!
      The gardenias smell lovely!
It's amazing to see how much the squash has grown in just a few days, isn't it? I'm hoping that it will continue to grow and I will be able to harvest a butternut squash! I might put some wire mesh around it to keep Mama Cat and Chicken Little away from it!

  4. When I saw the photo of the plant reaching his little tendrils out to your house, I immediately mentally began singing "Feed Me". Now thanks to Spotify I am listening to it.

    1. Oh, that's funny! I thought it was saying, "Let me in, let me in"!
Hm, you're right - I probably should feed it! It hasn't been fertilized since we first prepared the bed!

  5. How lovely to have a butternut squash growing, as well as the zucchini. I think Ernie squash is getting a bit bold, heading for the house! Perhaps it wants to tell you about that baby squash, just in case you hadn't already noticed. The gardenias are lovely and I like the way they compliment that vase.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I think Eenie just wants to come inside where it is warm! LOL. The gardenias do look nice in that teapot, don't they? Unfortunately, the yellow one has wilted, but the white one is still looking good.

  6. At least if there's a knock at the door, you'll know it's the squash plant asking to come in :)

    1. LOL, yes! Unless it's Chicken Little who sometimes peck at the door to say there's no more kibble for it to eat!

    1. Yes, I need to take some photos to update on the progress of the vine and the squash! Mama Cat is being mindful of the squash!
Yes, I put the little teapot to use! LOL. The gardenias smelled lovely! They've since faded and I've replaced them with a rose.
