Wednesday Updates!

The Butternut Squash is Growing

It's a lovely, sunny and warm (90F) day, today, and according to the forecast, the rest of this week will be just as warm, if not warmer (high of 95F by Friday!)  I can't tell you just how happy I am that it has warmed up to temperatures that are more normal for us at this time of the year!  For one thing, it will give more time for my butternut squash to grow and mature!

I also spotted a couple more zucchini growing on one of the plants:

Baby Zucchini

The other zucchini plant has only male flowers, still.

The squash vine is almost at the first step!

The Squash Vine Has Crossed the Paver!

M was here this morning and he was sad to see that the old table had broken.  He wants to try to put the table back together with some wood glue and longer screws.  So, I told him to buy what was needed and see if he can repair it.  He moved the pieces of the table to the garage until he can tend to it.

Indoors, the make do side table has been dismantled and the tea trolley is back in its corner:

The Tea Trolley is Back in Place

The kitchen stool is back to being a floater and the glass top has been tucked behind the entertainment center, along with the top from the coffee table, ready to be pulled out when needed next!

And here's what we have as the "new" replacement dining table:

"New" Dining Table

I asked M to bring in one of the two folding tables that I had stored in the garage.  They were bought for the party my mother held when my daughter turned one.  In the years since then, they've been used several times for parties, when extra space was needed at Thanksgiving, when we held a couple of yard sales, and so forth.  One of the folding tables had an edge chipped, but, the other one was only a bit scratched.  M cleaned that one for me. brought it in. and set it up.  I cleaned the top again a couple of times and wiped down the legs.  Then, spread the table cloth over it.  The table cloth covers the scratches very nicely, I think  The metal legs of the table aren't hidden, but, I don't think that matters.  The table fits the space and serves the purpose!  The old chairs work well with the height of the table, too.  Plus, I am using what I already have!

The colander needs some fruits or a few small pumpkins, perhaps.

Will I ever buy a replacement table and chairs?  Maybe.  I've looked at a few tables and dining sets online.  But, I already have a formal dining table and chairs and this "make do" version seems perfectly fine for right now, so, I don't feel in a hurry to buy something new.  I am considering getting a set of chair pads for the chairs, though.  I used to have some, which tore after many years of use and I tossed them.

What do you think?

Today, I am grateful for:

- M's help with the garden and bringing in the new table
- The sunny, warm day
- Water for the garden
- The squash and zucchini are growing
- Phone calls and emails from friends

Today's joyful activity was putting together a new dining table using items I had on hand!  I feel ridiculously pleased with myself about it!

  1. The table looks very nice and, it is an excellent reuse of what you have! If M can fix the broken table that would be great also. Your squash vine will invade the house soon!

    1. Thank you, Celie. Yes, if M can fix the other table, then, I will have that in the family room as it is a bit smaller, but, for now, I am very happy with my "new" table! Plenty of room to spread out a crafts project and I know I will be amusing myself with different centerpieces over the next several days!
That squash vine is growing at an amazing pace, isn't it?

  2. Your table looks fine with a lovely table cloth covering it. I agree with using something you already have and chair pads aren't too expensive. It would be great if M can fix your broken table though but no hurry now. I'm so impressed your butternut squash is growing well and fast. The weather is forecast to be warm this weekend here too, I'm pleased we don't need to turn the central heating on yet.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I'm quite pleased with the table and I have already ordered the chair pads. They will be delivered in a couple of weeks or so. If M is able to fix the other table, that would be lovely, too, but, the folding table works well for me.
I'm glad you are having some nice, warm weather in the forecast. Maybe you can still sit outside on your patio furniture over the weekend and enjoy it. And the longer we can hold off on turning on the heating, the better, isn't it? I'm not looking forward to the winter heating bills!

  3. A brilliant solution to your table situation & probably safer for you & Dancer than the floating glass table top. Hopefully M can fix the old table ... In my house, I would be concerned that too many flat surfaces would collect too many things on them, (col).

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. Yes, the glass top table was a very temporary solution because of Dancer, although, these days, he rarely jumps up onto table high furniture, the the low coffee table. Oh, I have the same problem with flat surfaces, believe me! If M is able to repair the old table, then, the folding table will go back to the garage.

  4. Table cloths do a great job of dressing up a table, don't they? Looks like you've found a good solution to your broken table. I wouldn't be in a hurry to find a replacement, especially if M thinks he can fix your old one.

    1. Table cloths do a marvelous job dressing up a table! This particular table cloth was was bought for $5.00 during an after Christmas sale, several years ago.
I am no longer in a hurry to replace the table, now. :)

  5. I have used folding table in the kitchen before as a stop gap table. Now I have my mom's old round oak table that was in her kitchen for about 50 years . I hope when I am through using it one of my sons will take it. I figure it has at least 50 more years of use in it. Which reminds me, when the weather is a little cooler I need to do a little maintenance on the finish.

    1. Your mom's table is a family heirloom and I, too, hope that one of your sons takes it once you are through with it. :)

  6. I'm happy to see your lovely tea trolley uncovered! The long table will certainly give you extra space for crafts and that will be useful with two holidays coming up soon. It looks great with the cloth covering it.
Your butternut squash looks perfect and I hope it continues to do well, also the zucchini. One day that creeping vine may start knocking on the door!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I'm thinking that the tea trolley could do with a new set of wheels as one keeps falling off! The folding table looks good with the table cloth, I think. Maybe, if I feel like it, I might buy some wood grained contact paper and redo the scratched top! But, for now, the table cloth dresses it up (and hides the metal legs a bit).
I checked on the butternut squash again, this morning, and it looks good (I still haven't covered it to keep Chicken Little away, but, so far, Chicken Little is showing little interest in the squash). I'm just waiting for the squash vine to come up the first step and then, maybe I'll move it to grow along the ground, again. I noticed the beginnings of another female flower on it, this morning! :)

  7. Perfect solution! That works just great and with your tablecloth it looks very pretty too. I will be interested to see if M can piece the old table back together. And new cushions will be nice if you decide on doing that.
That squash wants to come in for the cooler weather lol
