Hot on Friday

Giant Swallowtail Butterfly in the Lantana

I took this photo a couple of days ago, when I was outside, walking in the front garden - a Giant Swallowtail butterfly was enjoying the lantana flowers.  Actually, I took more than one photo!

Almost Difficult to See it

Blending in with the Flowers

We went up to 97F, today, and needless to say, I was very happy!  LOL.

I did some paperwork, today, paying bills and filing.  I am trying to stay on top of the paperwork.  Ideally, it should be done on a daily basis, but, a weekly "desk day" might work out well, too, when it comes to the filing.

I also scheduled a safety check on the gas appliances, taking the first available day, which is October 30th.  I've also noticed that there seems to be a small leak in the water heater, so, I need to call the plumbers on Monday.  There's always something when it comes to home maintenance, isn't there?

Gardener friend M was here this evening; he cut down a few more branches from the bottlebrush tree and watered the garden.  I served him a bowl of my stir-fried noodles and he enjoyed it.

I made a small start on the bedroom closet clearing/organizing, today, but, didn't finish it.  I also made a start on the desk that I have in the bedroom.  I know that popular wisdom states that one should not have desks and other items in a bedroom, that the bedroom should be devoted only for sleeping, but, I have always had a desk in my room from the time I was a small child, old enough to go to school.  I didn't grow up doing homework at the kitchen table or the dining table.  I did my homework at the study table in my room.  Having a desk in the bedroom doesn't bother me.  But, keeping the desk surface cleared and set up for paperwork, such as bill paying, is an ongoing challenge.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A sunny and almost hot day!
- M's help with the garden
- Being able to pay my bills
- Making progress with the organizing, decluttering, cleaning, etc.
- A productive day

Today's joyful activity was tending to the garden with M.

Plans for tomorrow include continuing to work on my bedroom.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. Your lantana bush is lovely and so is the butterfly. I've never had a desk in my bedroom and my paperwork is kept downstairs and jobs done on the dining table and I used to do my homework on my parents dining table. Our weather is supposed to be warm this weekend and going into next week too although the last couple of days it has rained and been very windy. It's nice to be warm in October.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; the lantana is doing very well and I was so happy to see that butterfly.
My plan is to turn the spare bedroom into my home office/crafts room. I have my filing cabinets set up there, and my mother's old desk. But, over the past couple of years, it has become a bit of a storage room for all the extra household items and other bits and pieces I don't want to store in the garage. I really need to give that room a good clean out and have all my paperwork stuff set up there.
I'm glad you are going to have some nice warm weather over the weekend; hopefully, you'll have some sunshine as well and it won't be too windy. :)

  2. The lantana, and butterfly, are lovely. 97 is too hot! We will have frost soon. I also had a desk in my bedroom growing up, as did my siblings. That is where we did homework also. I was expected to do it on my own, though if I needed help I'd go get my father. Now my sewing machine table is in my bedroom.

    1. I loved seeing the butterfly on the lantana. It was a little hot outside, in the afternoon, but, the house stayed fairly cool. I was happy! This is how our fall is, usually; September was cooler than normal and I was not happy about that! LOL.
Yes, all my (half)siblings also had their own study desks in their bedrooms. My mother was the one I'd ask for help with homework, when I was in elementary school (she was an elementary school teacher), but, once I got to the higher grades and needed help with math and physics, she got me a tutor (one of the teachers from her school).
My mother used to keep her sewing machine in her room; I currently don't have a sewing table and set up the machine on the dining table.

  3. Swallowtails are such pretty butterflies. At our old house, we had an abundance of them. However, I've only seen a couple this year in our yard.

    1. They are very pretty, aren't they? I'm not very good at butterfly identification, but, I love seeing them in the garden.

  4. Our son's former bedroom is my clearing house with computer desk and another desk with the sewing machine, and stuff often dumped on the bed, including ironing in waiting. Needless to say, when DS and DDIL are coming here to use the room, I clear it all away, stuffing it into drawers and so on. Then I have to hunt for it after they leave! : D

    1. Ha, ha, sounds like I'm not the only one with a "dumping grounds" of a room! I know well the stuffing into drawers (or baskets and shopping bags, in my case, because the drawers are usually full!) to clear space when company comes! I am in the process of emptying said baskets, right now, as I clear stuff from my desk - there were two baskets full of papers and files!

    1. Thank you, Anne. That butterfly was having a good time enjoying the nectar from the lantana flowers. :)

  6. Such a pretty pink the lantana flowers are. It's good you arranged a safety check on your gas appliances. I wonder if you will have to replace your water heater. Is it old?
Yes, it is always something. I noticed a small little tiny drop of oil underneath the valve at the bottom of my oil tank. It's not part of the tank, the valve is off to the side. So I put a little plastic cup with a kleenex in it maybe 6 months ago to see if this is something active or old. When I looked at it the other day, the kleenex looked discolored slightly so I called the furnace guy who does my yearly cleaning etc. and he came out to take a look.
My oil tank is full and it needs not to be to fix this. ( of course lol)
Since it's a very very tiny leak and it's not dangerous, I will need to use up this tank of oil before they want to do the repair.
That's my latest "it's always something"

    1. Thank you, Debra. The water heater is 5 years old and although the warranty expired earlier this year, it doesn't need to be replaced, yet. The plumber came out and replaced the leaky plastic drain valve with a new metal one which he said should last longer.
Hope your oil tank leak will remain unchanged until the tank of oil has been emptied. Hope the fix will be easy and not too costly.
