Cooler on Tuesday

Fuyu Persimmon

The persimmon tree, on its third year in my garden, had several flowers this spring and formed about three small persimmons.  But, only one survived to ripen.  I picked it today.  Looks perfect from this angle, doesn't it?  But, as my daughter put it, "The power of perspective".  Turn the fruit around and this is what you see:

Persimmon: Sun Scorched and Bird Pecked

So much so for the persimmon harvest!  I cut off the bad parts and ate the rest of it.  It was very sweet and ripe.  I hope that, next year, there will be more than one fruit!

I couldn't fall asleep last night until around 5:00 a.m. this morning.  So, I slept in till 11:30 a.m.  By the time I had my cup of tea and got dressed, it was noon.  It was a sunny day, but, a bit cooler.  I checked on the garden, put a piece of cardboard under the butternut squash to try and keep it from rotting due to contact with the bare ground, picked the persimmon , picked a small handful of broccoli florets, and brought in the emptied trash bins.  Neighbor S was taking in her emptied trash bins, too, and we greeted each other and chatted for a bit.  She also brought over a piece of coffee cake for me (not homemade, she said); it was still delicious, though!  I had it with my evening cup of tea.

New Chair Pads

I had ordered a new set of chair pads ($32 plus sales tax for a set of four) for the family room dining chairs and they arrived today.  I used to have light blue chair pads on those chairs, a long time ago, but, I had tossed them several years ago as they had got stained and were starting to tear.  I cleaned the chairs with a damp microfiber cleaning cloth, today, and tied on the new chair pads.  Afterwards, I vacuumed the family room.  That was all the housework I felt like doing, today.  I feel a bit guilty about not tidying the closet, but, I'll get to it, eventually!

Brunch had been leftover gyoza, there was coffee cake with tea, and dinner was a slice of leftover pizza.

Today, I am grateful for:

- The weekly trash collections
- Being able to order items online and having them delivered to the door
- Neighbor S bringing me coffee cake
- Working appliances and the electricity to run them
- What I was able to accomplish

Today's joyful activity was sprucing up the dining chairs with new chair pads.

Plans for tomorrow include tending to the garden with M and yes, sorting out my closet!

How was your Tuesday?  What are your plans for Wednesday?

  1. What a shame you only managed to save half a persimmon. I only discovered them a few years ago in the supermarket of course and I must look for them again. Your seat pads are very smart, nice and thick too, I like them. Day in today for me I think, it's forecast heavy rain so I'll wait for a break to walk Tilly.

    1. I know; I was sorry that the fruit was damaged, but, half a persimmon is better than no persimmon, I suppose. This is the season for persimmons, but, my grocery store doesn't have them (not yet, anyway).
Thank you; I like the seat pads and they are comfortable (those wooden chairs get a bit uncomfortable if you sit on them for a long time).
Sounds like a good day to stay in, if heavy rain is in the forecast. I do hope there will be a long enough break to walk Tilly. I remember you saying she doesn't like to go out in the rain.

  2. I've only had the American persimmon fruit, which is very astringent and really must be cooked to eat. My aunt would make pudding, with lots of sugar added. I hope you get a bigger crop next year, though you may have to fight for fruit with the birds! Your new chair pads are very nice.

    1. The American persimmon has to be almost overripe before it can be eaten, a little like the hachiya persimmon. If you try to pick and eat either of them when they are orange in color, they are not ripe enough to eat and very astringent. The fuyu persimmon, on the other hand, can be eaten before they are fully ripe. I was told, when I bought the persimmon, that it wouldn't produce fruit for the first five years at least, so, I'm glad I've had at least one fruit! I will have to cover the tree with netting when it starts producing more fruit!
Thank you; I like the colors of the new chair pads. They had a set with all shades of brown and one with orange and brown, but, I preferred these with the blues and creams as well as the browns. I think I might have to sew myself a denim table runner to go with the chair pads! :D

  4. I seem to remember persimmons (kaki) in Italy when we lived there for a short time after we married. They do sell them here but I never bought any yet. I love your chair pads and I'm sure they really "lift" the room.
We are having alternate downpours and sunshine, so I have to time my visit to the mailbox just right!

    1. The major supermarkets rarely seem to sell them, here, but, the ethnic grocery stores carry them.
Thank you; I like the colors on the chair pads. I am thinking of making a denim table runner to go with them!

  5. Your new chair cushions are very nice. I like the plaid and the colors. Are you happy with them? Are they comfortable? I know when ordering online sometimes things aren't how you envisioned once they arrive.
