Ornithogalum Arabicum |
I posted this photo on my post about the
Garden in May, stating I didn't know the name of this flower. Vegevi identified it as Ornithogalum arabicum, which is known as Star of Bethlehem in France, she said. It is also known as Arabian Star of Bethlehem and Arabian Starflower. Thank you, Vegevi. I edited the earlier post, too, but I wanted to make sure that we all know the name of this flower, now!
Interesting. I had another variety of Star of Bethlehem in my old yard. I hadn't seen one like I saw in your picture.
ReplyDeleteYes, I came across another Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum), apparently known as Common Star of Bethlehem, Garden Star of Bethlehem, Grass Lily, etc., when I was trying to identify this flower, earlier, which had a little bit of green along the outside of the petals. That might be what you had?
DeleteOrnithogalum umbellatum is very common here, it is called"La dame d'onze heure" ("the lady of eleven o'clock"?) because it opens in the morning around eleven o'clock and closes in the evening.
ReplyDeleteI think I read that name "eleven o'clock lady" when I read up on O. umbellatum. I think I should get some bulbs and plant them along with the mirabilis which are known as "four o'clocks" and have eleven o'clock ladies with four o'clocks! :D Thank you, again, for helping with the identification!
