Hollyhock House viewed from behind the chainlink fence that surrounds it, looking towards the pool and inner courtyard; the courtyard was meant to be used as outdoor living space:
Pool and Inner Courtyard; glass doors of the loggia center back, columns in front of the dining room to the right |
The frieze running along the outside of the walls depicted stylized hollyhocks, apparently the owner's favorite flower, that she requested be incorporated into the design of the house.

I wish the chainlink fence wasn't there, but, I suppose it is needed in order to maintain the grounds.

The original owner's bedroom was located upstairs and featured floor to ceiling leaded windows; her daughter's bedroom was located directly below hers and featured the same windows.

Hope you enjoyed seeing the pictures.
That looks like a fun day trip. I love hollyhocks!
ReplyDeleteI thought of you, Stephenie! They had a few rather dried out looking hollyhocks growing in the garden. I suppose they would have looked better in the spring. :)
DeleteThat's some fancy, beautiful house!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely house. Sprawling and quite large, but, at the same time, the rooms that we were able to see seemed intimate and not too large.
