Scorched Succulents |
The garden at the end of August is trying its best to outlast the heat of summer! The euphorbias in the front garden are scorched as they get the hot afternoon sun. I might consider replanting them somewhere else.
The side wall however, provides a little protection for the Stapelia or Starfish flower:

Yesterday evening, when I watered the garden, it was still a bud and the flower hadn't opened yet. This evening, when I went to check on it, it had opened up and had attracted several flies, drawn to the flower by its smell which gives its other name, carrion flower.
In the back garden, where it is a little shadier, the belladonna lilies (also known as surprise lilies or naked lady lilies) are flowering! Just a few weeks ago, I was commenting on another blog and saying that my lilies didn't bloom this year. Then, I caught a glimpse of pink under an overgrown rose bush and there they were!

M, who came to do the garden today, cut back some of the rose canes back so I could take the photos!
M also cleared the space under the lemon trees, where the miribilis or four o'clock plants were starting to die, did some other pruning and trimming, and mowed the grass for me. I collected some of the miribilis seeds and scattered them in another area of the garden, with the hopes that they might germinate and start growing in those areas, too. M and I spoke about consolidating some plants to bring more order to the garden, but we will do that when it is cooler. The forecast calls for 100+F temperatures, this weekend.
Today, I am grateful for:
- M helping me with the garden
- Garden flowers
- The plants that are managing to survive the summer heat
- Water for the garden
- The fruits that are forming on the lemon and orange trees
How is your garden at the end of August? Will you be doing any fall planting?
This lovely post reminds me how simple pleasures make for a more meaningful life. To have a garden with flowers, is special indeed.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ratnamurti. Yes, a garden is a very special place, isn't it?
DeletePretty flowers...the succulents are scorched...but probably better too much heat than too little! And the starfish plant is very neat! Your gardens/grass were being trimmed like mine today. But I hope you can survive that heat...wow. Andrea
ReplyDeleteThank you, Andrea. I don't have a lot of flowers at this time, but, that makes the few that I do have all the more special! Yes, September is usually one of the hottest months for us, but, so far, this summer has been relatively cool and comfortable. :)
DeleteYou still did a wonderful job. My garden died pretty quickly
ReplyDeleteThank you, Akasha. Yes, I remember those seed bombs you planted and the few seedlings that came up. We were trying to figure out what they were. Is fall a better time for you to plant a garden? There are some plants that do well in cooler weather.
DeleteThose were zucchini plants, but no zucchini’s ever came.
DeleteAh, so that's what they were! I planted some zucchini, last year and one plant produced one zucchini and the other plants just died! Too hot!
DeleteYour plants are getting scorched and we've had rain again!! We're supposed to have a warm September though.
ReplyDeleteYes, summer and even early fall, tend to be rather hot, here. No rain in the forecast for at least the next 10 days. Our rainy season starts in October; I don't expect any rain until around mid-October. Enjoy your warm September. :)
DeleteLovely flowers. Even with the dryness, you still manage to come up with some pretty ones.
ReplyDeleteI just fetched in a few sprigs of obedient plant for a little vase. They are finally coming into bloom after a long time.
We had a pleasant family visit and they managed to get out in the sailboat. Did a lot of cooking! Whatever would I do if I had a really big family visiting? We had fun playing a new card game.
Thank you, Bushlady. I'm sure your obedient plant sprigs look lovely in the vase. Sounds like a lovely visit with the family. I'm sure you'd manage just fine even if you had a really big family. You'd just cook more, that's all! :D
