Daughter Goes Back on Monday

Dancer Claims the Laundry Basket

My daughter went back to Berkeley, today.  We spent a quiet morning, together; then, after lunch, she packed her bags.  I packed up the frozen salmon steaks, some curry puffs I had also frozen, and the last bit of leftover Thai food for her to take back with her.

I dropped her off at the airport by 2:00 p.m.  She will be returning for her friend's bachelorette party, early next month, so I'll see her again in about 3 weeks.  Barely any time to miss her.  She called to let me know when she reached her apartment, safe and sound.

My plans for the day changed a little bit when the pharmacy texted me, in the morning, that two prescription refills were ready for pick up.  So, after I dropped my daughter off at the airport, I drove straight to the pharmacy to pick up my medications.

Then, since the dollar store adjoins the pharmacy, I went there for a few items.  They had packages of fresh mint, each containing three big bunches of mint, for $1 and I bought a package.  I also bought a butter lettuce, some crackers, cans of coconut milk and mackerel to replace the cans I have used, a jar of mango preserves to try, some snacks, and a mop.  My total came to $13.10, with the mop; the groceries and snacks came to $12.00.  I wanted to buy some bananas, too, but their bananas didn't look so good.

Instead, I went to the grocery store in the same shopping mall and I bought the bananas from there, as well as bread ($1.49 and $1), bagels ($1.99), cream cheese ($1.69), a small container of half and half ($1.79), green beans ($1.49/lb), a cucumber ($.50), and corn (4/$1).  I also bought a small container of ice cream ($1.99) and a bag of tortilla chips ($3.49) as I have been craving some!  My total came to $16.34.

Today's grocery shopping came to $12 + $16.34 = $28.34

My August grocery budget is $75.

Spent to date = $13.84 + $1.99 + $5.95 + $20.64 + $28.34 = $70.76
Balance left in the budget = $75 - $70.76 = $4.24

I think I need to avoid grocery stores for the rest of this month!

After I came home from my shopping and had tea, I watered the garden, took the trash can to the curb (only one, this time; the yard waste bin and the recycling bin didn't need emptying), and did the dishes.

My daughter, after she got home, did some grocery shopping at her dollar store:

And cooked rice and a vegetarian dish to take to a potluck at her office, tomorrow:

Stir-Fried Vegetables with Red Curry Almond Butter Sauce
She added some tofu to this dish, after she took the photo, after asking me if I thought she should and I said to go ahead.  It's the first time she made this sauce, she said, and she made a triple batch, so she has some for herself for later.

Today, I am grateful for:
- Daughter had a safe flight back
- Dropping her off at the airport without an incident
- Drama-free prescription refills
- Ultra sound authorization received in the mail
- Water for the garden

Today's joyful activity was enjoying the cup of coffee my daughter made for me.

  1. It must always come as a relief when your daughter calls to tell you she has arrived home safely, and you have another visit to look forward to very soon!
Lovely photograph of Dancer. I wonder what it is with cats and laundry baskets? X

    1. Yes, it is, Jules. Her flight takes just one hour, but then, there is another hour long journey by subway and a short bus ride (although, she often prefers to walk, saying it takes less time than waiting for the bus!). She has strict instructions from me to call or text when her plane touches down at the airport and when she gets home! She complies because she knows that I worry about her safety. :)

Thank you; I guess they make cozy spots for them?

  2. Is that oysters to the lower left of the bananas in the photo of your daughter's groceries? Do you know what dish she makes with them please?

So, not long to wait until you see her again. The time will fly by 😊

    1. They are oyster mushrooms, Eileen. She added them to the stir-fry that she made.

Yes, I'll be seeing her soon! In fact, she'll be coming down every month until the end of the year! :)

  3. It’s so nice you get to see your daughter once a month.
When I go home and return, I text / call before boarding, taking off and just after landing, and update my sister so she can share it with mom. 😊

I wish we had a dollar store that sells groceries here. I went way over my grocery budget this month.

    1. Yes, I'm very appreciative that I get to see her every month, for the rest of this year. I'm glad you, too, notify your family when you are flying. Both my daughter and I love the fact that we can get groceries at the dollar store. :)

  4. I have been eating tortilla chips this week, too. They are so delicious! I rarely buy them. You always get so much done. I am impressed.

    1. Tortilla chips are addictive! I don't buy them too often, either, because when I do, I can't stop eating them! Thank you, Stephenie; I often feel that I am not being productive enough, now that I am home most days!

  5. You and your daughter are such good cooks! The stir fry she made looks delicious and is sure to taste wonderful since the flavours have a chance to blend overnight before the potluck.

We always like to e-mail when we or our family get home from a visit. When DH got back, I quickly sent an e-mail with just a line in the subject to let our son know that he was here.

Dancer is seeking out good photo-ops so that he can get his picture on your blog as much as possible for his fans!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. She said that her co-workers really enjoyed her dish and there was barely any leftover.

I'm sure you and your family appreciate letting each other know that you've reached your destinations, safely.

I think Dancer is missing my daughter. I wonder what he thinks when she suddenly appears and just as suddenly, disappears!

  6. It's funny. I don't know where my son goes or what he's doing most of the time and it's okay. But if he visits here, he has to call as soon as he gets home. Luckily, he's okay with that and happily complies.

    1. I'm glad to see that I am not the only parent who wants to know if her child reached home, safely. :) I'm glad your son understands your need to know and complies. My daughter teases me about it, but, she lets me know her whereabouts on a daily basis.
