New Fabric Haul |
I've been playing with fabric, quite a bit, recently. I started out with just randomly piecing together some of the scrap pieces of fabric; it was a calming, almost meditative, relaxing activity for me. I'd trim the resulting pieces into squares or rectangles of no particular size with the idea that I might eventually incorporate them into a quilt top.
Then, on Saturday afternoon, daughter and I decided to go to Joann's, the fabric/crafts store that is closing down, to see if there were any bargains to be found. Daughter wanted some beads at 30% off. I wanted to see if they had any sewing thread (only some specialized machine embroidery thread were available), packaged elastic (the shelves were bare), and fabric, even though I had bought a stash of fabric in December!
I usually stock up on fabric when it goes on sale for 50% off or more, especially when this store used to have their after Thanksgiving/after Christmas clearance sales. But, now, even with the store closing, most of the fabric were only 20% off. Which wasn't a big savings, in my opinion, and probably why they had so much fabric left on the shelves in the store. I stood in front of the holiday fabric shelves, filled with bolts of St. Patrick's Day/Easter/spring themed fabric, Halloween/fall themed fabric, and Christmas/winter themed fabric, as well as patriotic design fabric and checked the prices. But, the original prices were mostly $9.99 and up and the 20% off discount didn't bring the prices down enough for me to want to purchase them.
Instead, I headed over to their low priced fabric section, where the "project cotton" fabric was originally priced at $2.00 per yard (which is the fabric I stocked up on in December). They didn't have as big a selection of that fabric, and some of them were the same as what I had bought in December, but, they, too, were 20% off and I decided to get more of that fabric for future projects.
The picture above shows what I bought. I already had some of the apple print fabric, the solid green fabric, and the pale pink with stars fabric, but, I bought more of them for $1.60/yd. I bought 2 yards each of the red striped, apple print, green, and orange fabric and 3 yards of the pink. Most of the fabric on the bolts were pre-cut pieces of fabric (I suppose pieces that were returned by previous customers for whatever reason?) I had a very nice store clerk assisting me, though. Sometimes, the precut piece was just over 2 yards, and rather than cutting off the excess, he just gave me the whole piece and charged me only for the 2 yards.
I did want 10 yards of the purple fabric (my favorite color and good for quilt backings, borders, sashing, etc.) However, that entire bolt seemed to be made up of 2-3 yard pieces. I think the biggest piece was a little under 4 yards. I was fine with getting 10 yards of pieces at that price (I could always sew the pieces together if needed). The sales assistant measured out 10 yards of the purple altogether, but, because it was in pieces, he gave me a further discount and charged me for only 5 yards! As a result, I paid a total of $25.60 for a little over 21 yards of fabric. Now, that's a good way to build up my fabric stash, I think. I was very happy with my fabric purchase.
Speaking of my fabric stash, I had a piece of fabric (bought from this same store, but, several years ago) in the stash. I remember shopping for it because I went with my daughter and she selected several pieces of fabric with cherry blossom designs because she loves cherry blossoms.

A New Skirt for Daughter |
It's a very simple gathered skirt with an elastic waist band. But, daughter is very happy with her new skirt with the cherry blossom print. And I am happy that a piece of fabric I had in my stash was used up.
I am grateful for:
- Finding fabric on sale
- A really nice sales assistant who gave me additional discounts on the sale fabric!
- More fabric for my stash
- Being able to sew a skirt for my daughter with fabric I already had in my stash
- Daughter being so happy to have a new skirt sewn by me.
Playing with fabric is one of my favorite joyful activities.
I do admit to wandering around the yarn section, too, but, nothing was reduced to a price that I thought was a good deal, so I didn't buy any yarn.
Have you been to Joann's since they announced their store closings? Did you find good bargains? Do you have a fabric stash? Do you think I went a bit overboard with my adding to my stash?
I have not yet been to Joann's. I hope to get there, but I may not.
ReplyDeleteIt used to be a favorite place to shop for fabric. Hope you will get there and find some good deals before they close.
DeleteYou got some good fabric deals at JoAnn. That skirt fabric is very pretty. I've bought almost all my Christmas presents for my niece's family! Mostly craft items for her kids, like coloring pencils, drawing paper, etc. I've bought some fabric , at 50 percent off. I will miss the store. There are no other fabric stores here.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased with my deals. Sounds like you got some good deals, too. Michael's sells fabric by the yard, but, you have to order online and have it shipped. Walmart sells fabric, too. Maybe you can order fabric from them, but, it's not the same as going into a store and touching the fabric to see how it feels, etc., is it?
DeleteI haven't made it to a JoAnn's yet, but I have wondered about their going out of business sales. I love fabric, but won't be buying any more until I use up some of what I have. Have you ever though about buying sheets new or used for quilting fabric?
ReplyDeleteIt's always a good idea to use up the stash before one buys additional fabric or crafts supplies. It's what I had said I would do and I didn't buy any fabric between 2020 and the end of 2024.
DeleteI have used sheets as quilt backings. Once, I used an old cotton sari. Every so often, I'd buy an extra flat sheet to make pillowcases and have used any leftover fabric from that when making a quilt top. The majority of my quilt tops are made with fabric scraps leftover from other sewing projects. I think I have all of 3 quilts that were made with fabric purchased specifically for a quilt.
I like the idea of using up most of your fabric stash, patting yourself on the back and rewarding yourself with lots more lovely on sale fabrics to dive into when a new project arises! You had just the right kind of fabric for your daughter's skirt, so pretty and young!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bushlady. I do like to have fabric (bought on sale) on hand for when I feel like sewing something. My stash has been replenished and I am not planning to buy any more fabric for at least the rest of this year. :)
DeleteSuch vivid colours and they kind of match.. they'd make a very pretty small squares design quilt.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chris. I do have a couple of projects in mind for some of the fabric I bought. The rest will keep until I decide on a project. :)
DeleteI look forward to seeing what you make from your new fabrics. The apple print would make a lovely summer dress for a little girl. (Not that is a very helpful observation!)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the suggestion for the apple print fabric! My daughter's friend has two little girls and the younger one will have her Christening in the summer (my daughter has been asked to be her godmother!) Maybe I can sew two matching dresses for the two little girls by then. I can use the red striped fabric and maybe even a little of the green as trim.
DeleteSome lovely fabrics. I like the skirt. The sale wasn't really a sale when I went. 20% off is lower than what I usually pay. I am sad to see my Joann's disappear though.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharon.
DeleteI, too, will be sad to see the store close. There are a couple of other craft stores, but, they don't have as big a selection of fabric.
I have heard the same from a few of my friends regarding the prices at Joanne's - that, at this point, prices aren't any different from their normal sales.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been myself though since we don't have one of their stores close by.
You got some very good deals on what you managed to find. And a very nice sales clerk to help you and further your money savings.
How nice.
I did visit a little charming town near where I live this past Friday and may have gone overboard at the fabric store AND the yarn store.
This has been a spendy month for me.
Good thing we're always allowed to get back on the frugal bus, right?
We're not kicked off forever for bad behavior. lol
I have a very small fabric stash. Mainly small pieces but it serves me very well for the things I like to do with it. The other day I purchased 2 smaller Charm Packs (pricey!!) and a Christmas Fat Quarter.
That's a darling skirt you made for your daughter.
Yes, the "going out of business" sales at Joanne's are not much better than their regular sales used to be and not as good as their after Christmas sales when you could find fabric at 75% off. I did get a very nice sales person, didn't I?
DeleteYou are allowed to splurge on fabric and yarn every so often! Especially since you donate most of the blankets you crochet. I allow myself $20 per month for "guilt-free" spending. Sometimes, I spend it on take out food; sometimes, I save it for a couple of months to spend on crafts supplies.
Thank you; daughter was very pleased with her skirt. :)
