Homemade Tamales |
Neighbor S's daughter N blessed us with some homemade tamales (chicken with green salsa and pork with red salsa) she and a friend had made and we had them for dinner. She declined our offer of blueberry muffins saying they had too many pastries at their house.
Since both my daughter and I stayed up till past 7:00 a.m. on Saturday night (daughter couldn't fall asleep until after 8:00 a.m., she told me), we both slept till past noon on Sunday.
Once awake, I did a load of laundry, checked the news to see if the fires were being contained, brought in boxes of kitty litter that had been delivered, and cleaned my bathroom. I also washed out an old dishpan I had stored in the garage, to use as a temporary litter box for Dancer if we have to evacuate.
I made pancakes for brunch; daughter ate hers with sausages and syrup, I ate mine with lentils and the last of the meatball curry. Dinner, as stated above, was tamales.
I took a short nap on the sofa after brunch.
According to the latest news, some of the fires are fully contained, the others are partially contained. The winds have been fairly quiet, allowing firefighters to try and gain control over the fires. However, winds are supposed to pick up over the next few days, again, and we are hoping that the winds will not cause the fires to blaze up again. Daughter and I are also hoping that we will not have to evacuate.
On Sunday, I was grateful for:
- A relatively quiet day without strong gusts of wind
- Neighbor N bringing us homemade tamales for dinner
- Working appliances
- Having a car to pack in readiness for evacuating
- The fires are being contained at least a little bit
Sunday's joyful activity was enjoying the dinner that neighbor N provided.
Plans for tomorrow include:
- Making a meal plan/cooking
- Putting away the laundry from Sunday
- Undecorating the tree (still haven't done that!)
- Cleaning out the fridge
- Taking the trash cans to the curb
- Watering the indoor plants
How was your Sunday? What are your plans for Monday?
I love tamales...I've made them a couple of times. I'm so sorry what you are going through with the stress of the fires. I hope they never come close to you and your daughter! andrea
ReplyDeleteThank you, Andrea.
DeleteMy niece likes to make tamales, and she brings them to most family gatherings. I appreciate that because, I'm not going to put in the effort to make them. We finally have all of the Christmas decorations down and put away. Everything always looks a little bare after we do that.
ReplyDeleteI hope the prediction of increased winds doesn't come to fruition and they continue to gain control over the fires.
Thank you, June. I am more than ready to take the tree down.
DeleteOh, goodness Bless, I had forgotten that you are not far from the terrible fires. I wish you, your daughter, Dancer & your friends & neighbours safety and peace of mind (if such a thing is possible.) Love & prayers FD xx
ReplyDeleteThank you, FD
DeleteI'm so glad that you're okay.
ReplyDeleteYou have good neighbours - the tamales look lovely.
Hugs x
Thank you, Lyssa.
DeleteThe tamales were much appreciated. :)
Keep safe and well
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. I keep reciting the last couple of lines from one of the prayers you sent me a long time ago: "When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze".
DeleteThis is a lovely prayer! I hope you and yours don't have to walk thru any fire, though.
DeleteThank you, Celie. The prayer is Isaiah 43:2. Angela used to have it posted on the sidebar of her blog and there was a line at the beginning about passing through a river/water, as well. I came across it as I was just diagnosed with cancer and I equated the waters with the chemo and the fires with the radiation (although the radiation did burn me and I had to stop treatments for about 3 weeks until the burns healed before I could continue with the rest of the radiation treatments).
DeleteI've never had a tamale but I want one lol. I have a question though. Is the husk a wrapper only or is it all part of what you eat? It seems like it would be a difficult texture.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I hope the winds hold off now that they are finally getting a handle on these fires. What a devastating week for your city.
The old dishpan is a good idea for Dancer. I'm glad you had a spare one.
I'm sure I'd have a hard time sleeping as well. :(
Yes, the husk is only a wrapper. You peel it away to eat the tamale.
DeleteThank you, Debra. We are under a renewed wind alert and fire warning until the 15th.
I'm so glad you all are still safe, and I pray that you remain safe as the remaining fires are being contained.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nia.
DeleteI've never had tamales. I'm glad that you are still getting food gifts, I'm sure it lifts your spirits at this difficult time. Praying that the winds will not increase after all, and especially that you and your friends and neighbours will not need to evacuate.
ReplyDeleteThe tamales were very good. It's a blessing to receive a gift of food and it did raise my spirits to know that my neighbors thought of me and wanted to share some dinner with me. Thank you for your prayers, Bushlady.
DeleteI keep seeing that the winds are picking up. Keeping you in my thoughts!
ReplyDeleteYes, Anne; the winds are picking up. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts.
DeleteJust commenting so you know I've been checking in as promised. I need to be on a certain computer to be able to comment but i do check the blog anyway, to reassure myself that there has been activity. I have read everything but need more time to go back and comment.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I see the news, I get more alarmed. I'm monitoring your location whenever they show a map. It must be exhausting to be on edge all this time, seeing what has happened to others. It's bad enough watching from here! The reporters have been mentioning the poor air quality so i thought of you with your purifiers. Good that you have them, when one thinks of all the chemicals that must be in the fumes. You seem to be coping well generally but do try to get enough sleep. Solidarity from neighbours goes a long way. I've heard of tamales but never tried one.
PS Will reply to your email asap.
Thank you for checking on me, Lady Ella. The winds are picking up again and are supposed to gust up to 70 mph from now till Wednesday. We are on heightened alert, once again. I did get 8 hours of sleep last night and, hopefully, I'll be able to sleep tonight, too.
ReplyDeleteNo rush to reply to the email; just take care of yourself and be well.
I've never heard of tamales before. It was very kind of your neighbour to share them with you.
ReplyDeleteAs always, it's good to hear from you, Bless. Are you using your air purifier? Xx
It was very kind of my neighbor to share her homemade tamales with us.
DeleteThank you, Jules. Yes, we are using our air purifiers, running them constantly. I should vacuum the filters one day soon.
Praying you continue to be safe during the fires, hoping for rain and no wind.
ReplyDeleteThank you, JJ. Some rain would truly be a blessing!
