Mid-August Catch Up

Calamondin (Calamansi) Fruit

Mid-August, already!

I picked some calamondin (also known as calamansi), which is a type of citrus, a cross between a kumquat and another type of citrus, from the tree in my backyard, the other day.  It is rather small, sour fruit, but, I've made marmalade with it, in previous years.  This time, I just picked a couple of the fruit that were within my reach to add to a glass of water to make some infused water to drink.

Remember that blood test I did on Friday (when I first encountered the new parking machine)?  Well, on Saturday, I received a notification from my primary care physician's office that there was an update to my medical record and, although I logged into the website, I was rather confused because I didn't know why she had made any updates to my records.  It took me a while to realize that I had been an idiot!  I had two lab test requisition forms - one to be done for my upcoming appointment with the oncology nurse practitioner, and one for the November appointment with my primary care physician. I usually get my tote bag ready the night before, with the lab requests and a granola bar and a bottle of water, etc.  But, last Friday, I had forgotten to do that and had almost gone to the car without the lab requisition and hastily grabbed the form from the file folder at the last minute.  It wasn't until the lab test results had been posted on the primary care doctor's website that I realize that I had taken the wrong blood tests!  I had done the labs for the primary care physician (which weren't due until November) instead of the oncology tests, which were needed for this, upcoming Friday!  Yikes!

After I spent some time berating myself for being stupid, I quickly made another appointment for the oncology blood tests (the earliest I could get was Tuesday morning) and hoped that the results would be ready by Friday!  If not, I would have had to reschedule my appointment.

Then, on Monday, I called the primary care physician's office, explained what I had done, and asked if I could get another lab requisition form for the November appointment.  Yes, I was told, it will be ready to be picked up, later in the week.  I will pick it up on Friday, on my way to the oncology appointment.  I apologized for the mistake, but, I was told not to worry about it.

On Tuesday morning, I woke up early for me (7:00 a.m.) after a rather restless night of sleep and went to have my oncology blood tests done.  I was told that the test results would be available on Thursday, so I won't have to reschedule my appointment, after all.  I had another opportunity to use the new parking machine and this time, I was able to scan my ticket and swipe my credit card like a pro!  LOL.  I was very proud of myself!

After I came home, I ate some peanut butter toast for breakfast and then, I took a nap in the afternoon.

I had watered the back garden on Saturday evening and again, on Monday evening.  On Tuesday evening, I watered the front garden.  I watered the back garden, again, on Wednesday, evening.

Broken Eggshells

Chicken Little had been sitting on her eggs all this time, but, when I checked on Monday, I saw that there were broken eggshells in the nest and no signs of any chicks.  I don't know if the eggs hatched and Chicken Little took her brood to another location or if a possum had found the eggs and eaten them.  I haven't seen Chicken Little around, either, so, I don't know quite what has happened.

In the meantime, it looks like Mama Cat, too, has left the garden and moved on.  The last couple of times I saw her, she had moved away from the back garden and gone to the front, where she'd sit on the driveway and wait.  But, she would come to the back to eat.  Then, she didn't come to the back to eat and I didn't see her in the front, either.  I asked M if he had seen her when he was cleaning up the front garden and he said no.  It's been over two weeks since I last saw her, and I've called her, but, she hasn't come.  I am assuming that she just left.  She never did accept Patches being here and maybe she decided it was time she left.  I hope she found herself another safe garden in which to be or, maybe, she went to that big field of catnip where all garden cats go to rest.

Mama Cat in the Squash Patch Last Summer

In mid-August, I am grateful for:

- Realizing I made a mistake with the lab tests in time to redo them before my appointment
- Being able to use the new parking machine without any problems
- Access to medical care
- Water for the garden
- Memories of Mama Cat

Joyful activities have included watching the Olympics and the Closing Ceremony, picking more okra, green beans, and corn from the garden, and reading library books online.

How are things with you?

  1. I'm glad you realised the confusion with your lab tests in good time. I keep trying to check for my x-ray results, and I've found navigating the online system can be quite confusing.
I'm sad to hear that Mama Cat has moved on to pastures new. I hope she is safe and well. Xx

    1. Thank you, Jules. I was very upset that I made that mistake, but, it has been resolved. I hope you are able to get your x-ray results without further difficulties.
Yes, Mama Cat seems to have moved on to pastures new. She has left her paw prints all over my heart.

  2. Oh geeez - it is so annoying when things like the mixup with your blood test happen isn't it? We've all been there. But you got it all worked out and no need to reschedule so that's all taken care of.
And you're a pro at the new parking machine :)

Oh I'm sad to hear about Momma Cat. I know you will miss her.
    I still miss seeing Snowball.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I was very down on myself for getting it all mixed up! It was a first for me and with a family history of dementia, I was worried that maybe I'm headed that way, myself! I was SO proud of myself for mastering the parking machine! :D
Yes, I do miss Mama Cat. Snowball was a character, wasn't she? :D

  3. We all make mistakes like that and feel silly when we do, but I'm glad you were able to get it sorted out. Your garden will feel kind of lonely now, but who knows what the next creature will be that wanders in?

    1. Thank you, June. I was very upset with myself! My daughter assured me that it wasn't the end of the world, but, I was very worried that maybe it was a sign of things to come (there's a family history of dementia). I miss Mama Cat, but, Patches is still here.

  4. The fruit look nice, definitely a good idea to make marmalade with them. Don't worry about the mix- up with the blood test appointments, easily done and well done getting to grips with the ticket machine.
Oh no, I do hope Chicken Little and Mama Cat are OK.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I was upset with myself over the blood tests mix up, but, at least I realized it in time to resolve it. And yes, I was able to manage the parking machine! :D
This year's calamondin crop is not that great, but, I'm happy to have a few fruit to add variety to my diet. :)
I, too, hope that CL and Mama Cat are OK.

  5. I'm glad you got the blood tests sorted and hope all is well. You've become a pro at this parking payment system! I'm sorry Mama Cat has disappeared. Cats often know when they're lives are coming to the end, and go hide somewhere. Was she older? I hope Chicken Little has just gone home for now.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I was very upset and concerned that the blood test mix up was a sign that I was getting dementia (there is a family history); only time will tell, I suppose. But, I was very happy and proud of myself for learning how to use the new parking machine! LOL.
Yes, Mama Cat was old and had some respiratory health issues. It might have been her time. There was another cat, several years ago, who disappeared for a long time, and then, showed up, again, one day, just a shadow of his former self; I gave him some food which he ate, and then, he left again, never to reappear. To this date, I think he came to say goodbye. I do hope that Chicken Little will show up; I rather miss her!

  6. Sorry about your mix up with the labs! Seems like we need to retire to deal with health and dr visits and lab tests! andrea

  7. I hope all your medical tests show good results. It’s hard to stay on top of all the appointments, but you got it straightened out! ❤️
The cast of characters in the yard is changed. Hoping all are safe wherever they go.
Having a nice tour of Fresno. We walked a little over 2 miles today and daughter plans to take us hiking tomorrow. 😅 We had a nice swim at the pool and will eat at a local restaurant tonight. 🥰

Yes, things constantly change, don't they? Maybe there will be a new cast of characters waiting in the wings. :)
Sounds like you are having a wonderful visit with your daughter! Enjoy your time with her. :)

  8. I'm glad that you were able to get the right results processed in time for your Friday appointment. It all worked out in the end.
The calamondins look pretty. We are still getting lots of blackberries.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Yes, fortunately, it all worked out well and the results were available in time for Friday's appointment. The calamondins look like miniature oranges, don't they? Lucky you to have blackberries! I've tried to grow them without much luck.
