A Degree Cooler on Tuesday

High of Only 99F

On Monday, we went up to 100F; today's high was only 99F and it was still only 98F when I took the photo.  Humidity was 23% at the time, but, it has now gone up to 29% at 4:45 p.m. (and the temperature has come down to 91F).  I am comfortable with the fans on.

On Monday, I managed to be somewhat productive.  I paid the three bills that were coming due, later this week, called and made Dancer's vet appointment for his arthritis injection, took the trash cans to the curb for pick up on Tuesday morning, picked more okra , another ear of corn, and ripe chilies from the garden, cooked the green beans I had picked earlier and the ear of corn, made egg salad for sandwiches, and watered the back garden.  I also did my meal planning blog post, borrowed and read another ebook and watched the Olympics games coverage.

The rooms of the week, this week, are the dining room/area and the laundry room.  Today, I dusted and polished the dining table, changed the table cover (my mother crocheted this little square table cover; obviously, I didn't block it the last time I washed it!), and dusted the china cabinet.  On my "someday" to do list, I have "remove everything from the china cabinet, wash everything, wash the glass shelves in the cabinet, and put everything back".  But, that someday is not today!  Today, I've already dropped and broken a glass plate and dropped a drinking glass (which didn't break)!

Dining Table

The basket of fruit contains lemons and passionfruit from the garden.

I also dusted and polished the living room coffee table and a side table.  Dancer had been sleeping on the coffee table, lately, and it needs to be dusted more frequently than once a week, as a result.

In addition, I did a load of laundry, today, and hung up everything inside the house to dry.

Salad for Brunch

I made myself a salad for brunch: lettuce, cucumber, carrot, apple, garbanzo beans, plus honey mustard salad dressing.

I'll probably have an egg salad sandwich for dinner.

I called former neighbor T to check on her, today, as she didn't call me as usual on Sunday or on Monday; she was fine, but, had forgotten to call.  I also called aunt C and left a message, as she hasn't called in several weeks.  Hope she is well, too.

I am grateful for:
- Electric fans
- Electricity to run the fans
- Fresh produce from the garden
- Water for the garden
- Weekly trash collections

Today's joyful activities included watching the games on TV and reading.

Are you having similar temperatures where you are?

  1. Yes, it is hot and humid and when the wind blows it is like a steam bath blowing over you. My joy is air conditioning!

    1. The humidity would get me. I prefer the dry heat, even if it feels like standing in front of an oven, at times. I'm glad you have air conditioning. :)

  2. It's very warm here but there is a breeze which helps when outside. We haven't needed to use the room fans but I do have the desk fan on when I'm at the computer. Your salad looks good and honey and mustard dressing is my favourite too. Is Chicken Little still providing you with eggs, I did read in your comments she is helping herself to your strawberries!

    1. That's good that there's a breeze outside. A desk fan is a good idea, too. I have a ceiling fan and a stand fan and there's a table fan on the kitchen counter for when I'm cooking. Chicken Little hasn't provided any eggs since she started sitting on her eggs. I honestly don't think those eggs are going to hatch - it's been over a month, but, I'll leave them in place for another week or so and then, I guess I'll have to remove them! I wonder if she'll lay more once the eggs are gone?

  3. That is certainly too hot for comfort. We've had a break in our heat wave & I must admit to enjoying the cooler mornings & certainly makes it easier to get things inside & out done. Your cleaning routine is certainly working for you, I may adapt something similar (thanks) :) Wise not to take things out of the china cabinet today (col).

    1. I'm glad you have had a break in your heat wave, Mary-Lou. I have a very narrow "Goldilocks" temperature zone when it is not too hot and not too cold to do things! But, yes, the cleaning routine is working for me. Sometimes I skip a week, but, it is easy to catch up. Yes, I thought the china cabinet could wait for another day! :D

  4. For it to be so hot, you had a good, productive day. My grandmother crocheted many things like your mother's. Such detailed and intricate work they did.

    1. Thank you, June. I wait until it is cooler and then, do things in small segments of time.
My grandmother, too, used to crochet; I have two table covers that she made. I told my daughter she is under no obligation to keep any of it, but, of course, I hope that she will keep at least one of my mother's many crocheted items.

  5. Our weather in NYC completely changed from the heatwave. We had lots of rain yesterday evening and this morning the temperature is 68 degrees.
My younger daughter tells me the 105 to 107 degree temperatures in Fresno are not uncomfortable because the humidity is so low. She is settling into her apartment and has access to a pool and gym which she likes. She got furnishings from a store, Facebook Marketplace and thrifting and has an inflatable mattress for the guest bedroom. Daughter likes the job; she is adapting to a new record-keeping and computer system and getting to know the other employees. Yesterday and today, she is visiting a friend in Sacramento. It’s a bit of a drive, but I’m glad she’ll spend time with a dear friend.
Nice that you’re harvesting some fresh produce. It all sounds wonderful. 😊

    1. I'm sure you are enjoying the cooler temperatures.
Yes, the high temperatures we have are offset by the low humidity. I'm glad she's settling into her apartment and getting used to her new workplace. That's great that she has a friend in Sacramento and can visit. If she's in Sacramento, she wouldn't have felt last night's moderate earthquake. :) The epicenter was several miles away, but, I felt it and I heard on the news that it was felt as north as Fresno.

  6. Oh I was also going to ask about the eggs! G gave me some last week for the first time in a year, and it reminded me.
I have also been dropping things a lot for some reason. I think maybe migraine related. I managed to smash a Japanese beer glass on Saturday, which just about says it all. :o(
The tablecloth is beautiful and must have taken your mum ages!

    1. CL is diligently sitting on her eggs, but, so far, nothing has happened and I am sure they are not going to hatch, now.
Oh, I'm sorry about the Japanese beer glass!
Thank you; my mother would calculate how many squares or motifs she needed to make a table cover and set herself a goal of a square a day or four small motifs a day. If she was not sewing, she was crocheting. :)

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. My mother loved to crochet.
The garbanzo beans was a good source of protein for the salad. :)

  8. Oh that is hot! We had some storms come through and it's been a lot less humid. I am really liking it. Sounds like you had a really productive day.

    1. I'm glad the storms helped to reduce the humidity and you are liking the weather. I did get all the things on my to do list done, so, I'm happy. :)

  9. Oh, you have been VERY productive! The table square your mom made is beautiful! I know you treasure that! This heat is really something this summer. I hope you are managing to stay cool! We are going to have a little cool down in the next few days and I can't wait!

    1. Thank you, Mandy; I'm getting a few things done, so I'm happy. :) It'll probably get hotter before we cool down, again, but, I am staying cool with the fans. I hope you enjoy the cooler temperatures.

  10. Hello Bless,

Thank you for such a wonderful blog. I commented several months ago in gratitude for all you share here. I've learned so much over the years of silently reading your blog as I've only made one comment before. I wanted to ask if you would consider doing a series on how you prepared for retirement, financially, mentally, spiritually, etc., similar to how you've shared your monthly balanced goals. Retirement touches and engages all aspects of ourselves, similar to the balanced life goals, so I'd love to read a series on that. Thanks for considering this as I'm sure others would benefit from such a series as well!

    1. Hello, there! Is this Pam? Thank you for saying you've enjoyed reading my blog and it has been helpful!
It has been almost six years since I retired, but, I will be quite happy to do a post or two about how I prepared for it! I might have to read back and see what I posted about it to refresh my memory! But, maybe I can do a 6 year review of retirement and see if being retired is what I anticipated it to be!

  11. I chuckled at this, simply because my dining room is used as a laundry room, far more often than it gets used for dining :)
I'm sorry you broke a plate. Xx

    1. I rarely eat at the table when I'm home by myself. I use it more for working on craft projects and it becomes my daughter's work desk when she is home. The table in the family room gets used as an extension of the laundry room because it is right in front of the laundry area.
It's OK, I've plenty of plates because my mother bought a lot of them when we hosted a gathering. :)

  12. Such low humidity! That really helps keep you comfortable.
It's been a soupy hot mess here(although better in the last few days)
I am getting a lot of crocheting done in my air conditioned house! lol
Your table looks lovely with your mother's cloth. I like it unblocked and sort of casually fluffed a bit :)

    1. Yes, the low humidity is wonderful. I'm glad you have air con in your house and it keeps you comfortable. Thank you, Debra; to be honest, I rarely block my mother's crochet or my knitting, etc.!
