Rainy Weekend

Blinchiki

My lovely neighbor S had given me a bag of five frozen blinchiki - crepes filled with a ground meat mixture - some time ago and I decided to have them for brunch, earlier in the week.  I sauted them in a little oil and ate three of them for brunch and the other two later in the day as a tea time snack.

We are having a rainy weekend!  Saturday was mostly cloudy during the day time and the rain started late evening.  It rained steadily for several hours although it seems to have ceased now (writing this at 2:30 a.m.)  According to the forecast, there will be rain on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, then a break from the rain on Wednesday, and more rain on Thursday and Friday!  Some areas are already under an evacuation order due to the possibility of mudslides.  The weather forecasters are talking about atmospheric rivers and the "pineapple express" (a stream of moisture laden tropical air from the mid-Pacific).  I am hoping the rain will water the garden for me!

I haven't been putting on the big gas heater, recently, using only the small electric space heater to keep me warm, and so, when I woke up on Saturday morning, the thermostat registered 54F inside the house!  To me, that's cold!  So, I switched on the gas heater and set it at 65F.  Still later, however, I turned it up to 70F.  I'll turn it down to 60F when I go to sleep.

I spent a fairly relaxed day on Saturday.  I dusted the main rooms, did a little paperwork, watched some online videos and a TV program, darned some wool socks I had knitted (some of the socks I had darned earlier have started to tear, again!), read blogs, and read one of my library books.  I had leftover milkrice and mackerel curry for brunch and fried breaded butterflied shrimp for dinner.

I am grateful for:

- Rain for the garden
- A working heater
- Scented candles
- Generous neighbors
- Library books

Saturday's joyful activity was reading.

Plans for Sunday include more reading and maybe some bill paying and filing.

How is your weekend coming along?  What is the weather like where you are?

  1. Those blinchiki look tasty! With meat inside they're a sort of sausage roll. It sounds a relaxed Saturday. Good for you! Love FD xx

    1. They were very tasty, FD. We make something similar, but, we dip the filled crepe in beaten egg and coat it with bread crumbs and then, fry them! They take a lot of work, but, oh, they are so good! It was a rather relaxed day, on Saturday, but, I did some housework today, to make up for it! :D

  2. 54 is cold! At least for me, too. I hope there aren't too many problems caused from all the rain. If people didn't have to worry about mudslides, it is certainly needed in your dry climate.

    1. Yes, 54F inside is a bit too cold for my comfort. I was all bundled up with my wool socks and fingerless gloves, etc., until the house warmed up! :D
The rain is needed, but, it becomes a problem when too much is dumped in a very short period of time. And that is what is supposed to be happening with these back to back storms we are getting.

  3. Our New York City weather is cold, and now on Sunday morning, sunny! I hope there aren’t mudslides or other damage where you live. I never heard of the Pineapple Express as a weather phenomenon. I have added Fresno, California to the weather app on my phone because my younger daughter will move there this summer for a new job. I like to follow the weather in cities where my family members live. I love watching the temperatures in Chicago (where a nephew and his wife live). NYC always seems easier in comparison.
The food dish from your neighbor looks delicious. It’s fun to try something new.

    1. Enjoy the sunshine! The cold seems easier to take when it is sunny, I think. Chicago can get cold and windy! Well, now you've heard of the pineapple express and it's not a train with tropical fruit from Hawaii! LOL. If your daughter is moving to Fresno in the summer, then, it must mean she accepted the job she was interviewing for, earlier! Congratulations and my best wishes to her!
The stuffed crepes were delicious. I'm lucky that I get to try different food, thanks to my neighbor. :)

    2. I've been following the weather system there. I actually teach a weather course, so these atmospheric rivers interest me. I hope your garden gets a good watering but not too much of a drenching! 54 is too cold inside! I keep my house at 67 in winter, day and night when I'm home. The crepes look delicious.

    3. That's interesting that you teach a weather course, Celie. We are definitely experiencing some weather over here! It's been a steady rain, slowing down to a drizzle from time to time where I am. The garden is getting a good soaking and you can almost see the succulents perking up! I have the heater on at 65F, right now, which is acceptable as I am layered up! But, I made a big pot of soup and that warmed me up, as well. :)

    1. They are delicious, Chris, although I might have browned them a bit too much! :D All the rain will help our gardens grow in the spring! :)

We had egg salad sandwiches for lunch, always a favourite with us.

  8. You really did get the rain didn't you? Did you set your buckets up to catch some of it?
Those little roll up thingies from neighbor S look very good.
I would've enjoyed them -not sure how long they would've lasted in my freezer ;)

    1. Yes, lot's of rain! I thought about setting up the buckets, but, I didn't! I let the rain soak into the ground, instead.
The blinchiki were very good. They don't last very long in my freezer, either, but, we had lots of other food at the time they were given (during the holiday season), so I kept them for later. :)
