Another Rainy Monday and Maybe a Meal Plan?

Mama Cat

Guess what?  We had more rain, today!  According to the news, we have received as much rain in a twenty-four hour period, as we would have normally received in six months!  That is a lot of rain for us!

My aunt C called in the morning for a chat and she said their den roof is leaking.  Of course, nothing can be done to repair it until the rains stop!  I spoke with friend R, too, as she lives just a few blocks south of an evacuation warning area.  She said the streets near her apartment building are flooded, but, she is okay.

It rained steadily all day, but, during a period when it had slowed down to a drizzle, I took the trash cans out to the curb and collected the mail from the mail box.

I also gave Mama Cat a new box in which to shelter.  Her old box was sodden and so was the old sweatshirt I had put down in it as her blanket.  I covered the outside of her new box with foil to try and make it a little more water resistant and gave her a new blanket.  I am using my old sweatshirts and sweatpants, that were too worn to donate, but, I didn't want to just throw, to make blankets for Mama Cat.

Mama Cat in her new box

By the way, the side door to the garage is left ajar for her to seek shelter in the garage if she wants to do so (even if that lets some of the rain beat in), but, so far, she seems to prefer being in her box.  It's her way of asserting her feral status, I suppose, even if she will consent to sleep in a box I prepare for her.  Today, she was visited by Chicken Little who had a lot to say for itself and made such a noise that I went to see if it was being attacked, but, no, it was probably complaining that I didn't prepare a box for it!  I also noticed a new calico cat, but, it ran away before I could get my phone to take a picture!

Neighbor S called in the late afternoon to say her daughter N had made some desserts and would I like to have some.  You know me, I can't say no to desserts!  A little while later, N brought me some treats:

Desserts Compliments of Neighbors S and N

There were two pieces of a gelatin dessert, two pieces of homemade baklava (made by a member of the extended family) and a frangipane blondie that N had made.  I froze some of the baklava and the blondie for my daughter to try on her next visit home.

Speaking of daughter, she has had two back to back migraines in the past few days.  I wonder if they are triggered by the weather?

I vacuumed the family room, today, and washed a few wool knitted items by hand.  I also did a little self care/pampering and gave myself a pedicure, soaking my feet and applying some foot lotion that was a New Year's gift.  I didn't apply any nail polish, though, as I wanted to put on a pair of wool socks before my feet got cold!

Brunch was two of the banana muffins I baked earlier.  Dinner was a bowl of my ham and split peas soup with a slice of buttered toast.

Which brings me to meal planning!  I haven't been meal planning lately.  I've been finishing up leftovers and making a few easy meals as and when I felt like it.  Which works out well when there is just one person to please.  I do want to have some meals planned, though, so that I don't stand in front of the fridge or freezer and wonder what to make for brunch or dinner.

So, here's my meal plan options for this week, based on what I have on hand:

Brunches: The last two banana muffins; leftover ham and split pea soup; scrambled egg with bacon and toast or hash browns, uppuma(Indian style cream of wheat). deli meat sandwich, waffles or pancakes

Dinners: Ham and split pea soup with toast or drop biscuits; sauteed chicken (from the freezer) with pasta and vegetables (snowpeas and broccoli, perhaps, also from the freezer); rice, beef curry (from the freezer), dhal, and eggplant; leftovers.

Snacks: Homemade yogurt, fruit, cookies, crackers and peanut butter, nuts, cereal

Let's see how that works out!

On Monday, I was grateful for:

- More rain for the garden
- A good non-leaky roof
- Still having electricity, phone, and internet services
- Working appliances
- Neighbors S and N sharing treats with me

Monday's joyful activity was giving myself a pedicure.

Well, it was still Monday when I started writing this blog post and now, it is Tuesday!

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. Mama cat is lovely and I'm sure she is very appreciative of her new box and blanket to rest on. Chicken Little is very cheeky isn't he :) Do you know who is the owner of the calico cat? We have a cat visit our garden and Tilly goes mad if she sees it and it soon scoots away back over the fence. Your treats look delicious. I hope your daughter recovers well from her migraines.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, Mama Cat seems to like her new box. :) That Chicken Little is too much! :D Sometimes, when I go out into the back garden, it'll leave its favorite roosting place under some of the plants at the very back, fly up on to the side wall and then, walk up and down the length of the wall, clucking at me, as if complaining that I invaded its space! LOL.
I don't know who owns the calico cat or even if it is a stray. It's the first time I've seen it; maybe it belongs to the new neighbors?
Tilly is obviously letting any visiting cats know that it is her garden!
The treats were delicious! Not good for my waistline or blood sugar, but, delicious! :D
Thank you, Eileen; daughter said she's feeling better, today. But, she decided to work from home, instead of going into the office.

  2. Mama Cat is beautiful, and she's obviously grateful for her comfy box and asserting her right to live al fresco for as long as possible.

Today has been a 'get the washing done' day for me, now it's all on the airer to dry I can sit with a coffee and nip around blogland reading some of my favourite blogs. xx

    1. Thank you, Sue; Mama Cat is very gentle and will let me get fairly close to her, but, she will not let me touch her.
Sounds like you had a productive day!

  3. That's a lot of rain for you! I'm sure Mama Cat appreciates the box. Putting foil over it is a good idea! She probably feels she might get trapped inside the garage, and the box is easy to escape if she needs to. Those desserts look lovely. I hope you stay dry!

    1. Yes, it is a lot of rain. Our average annual rainfall in Los Angeles (measured at a station in downtown) is just under 15 inches (one drought year, we barely received 5 inches). According to the news, between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon, downtown L.A. received just over 7 inches of rain, while some other communities in the L.A. city area received over 11 inches!
Mama Cat followed me to the garage, today, but, she went back out and went into her box!
Thank you; the heater is on and I'm staying warm and dry!

  4. I hope your California weather improves so you get enough rain without flooding, leaky roofs, or impassable roadways. ☔️ We are having another sunny day in NYC, at least so far on Tuesday morning.
I have heard people say that storms and changes in atmospheric pressure trigger migraines. Sorry that your daughter is suffering and I hope she has recovered by the time you read this message. 🤞🏼
I love Mama Cat’s house with the foil covering. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” immediately sprang to mind. 😉
Your meal plan sounds good. I make a running weekly list of planned dinners (on my cellphone). It helps to prevent wasting forgotten food, but I trade days when I want to and when we have leftovers galore. I have been thinking about adding lunches now that I’m home almost every day. As I write this, I realize I’ve been home for lunch since March of 2020, so probably should move that from the thinking-about stage to the actually-doing stage. Didn’t you just have a note about procrastination? 😬
The desserts from S look great. Such self-control to save the good stuff for your daughter! 🥰
I love hearing about your cross-country move. I admire your family’s courage in taking making that journey.

    1. Thank you, Taconix. We really do need the rain, but, it would be most helpful if it came down at a slower rate over a longer period of time! :D Yay for having sunshine in NYC! My daughter said that it has stopped raining up in the Bay Area and sent me a picture of clear blue skies taken from her window. She is feeling much better, today, thank you. :)
Mama Cat seems to be enjoying her water resistant box; she went into the garage with me, today, but, came right out, again and headed to her box. :)
I like the flexibility of having a list of meals without a specific day of the week attached to each meal. Planning dinners was never too difficult for me - I'd generally cook 2 or 3 main dishes at the beginning of the week and we'd eat off of that the rest of the week. It was the lunches (and breakfasts) that were a problem, especially when I was working and my daughter was going to school. I almost always packed our lunches plus breakfast/snacks as we didn't eat breakfast at home. I was always looking for portable lunch ideas! Even now, if I don't plan my brunches, I have a hard time deciding what to eat! My default brunches are scrambled eggs on toast or peanut butter on toast!
First, we drove down from Wisconsin (I went to university, there) to Florida (Wisconsin winters were too cold for my parents) and then, after a year or so of trying to make it in Florida, we drove to CA and here we've stayed. :)

  6. Wow that is a lot of rain! I hope your house and street were ok. Nice that desserts were shared. They look lovely. I think maybe your daughter's migraines can be caused by the weather. That's when I usually get one, that or stress. Hopefully she'll feel better soon.

    1. Yes, it is a lot of rain for us, but, so far, things are OK in my area. They were lovely desserts and I'm very thankful to have received them.
I have wondered if daughter's headaches are due to weather changes and/or stress. I know I used to get migraines when I was under a lot of pressure at work, at one time (I left that position after 6 months and the migraines eventually went away, although I still get visual aura migraines from time to time).

  7. Your weather was on the news this morning, with an extra item in the current affairs section. It sounded worrying, so I am glad you are fine. (They mentioned the pineapple express and I smugly thought "No need to explain!".)
Mama Cat looks really cute and I'm glad she has somewhere warm and dry from where to survey her world...

    1. Yes, some parts of the state has suffered quite a lot of storm damage; I'm thankful that things are not as bad where I am. Too funny about the pineapple express! Who said blog reading isn't educational?! :D
Mama Cat is going to need a water proof mattress, I think! Her new blanket is already a bit damp! I should have put the sweatshirt in a plastic bag!

  8. Mama cat must be happy with her new box and bedding. What a good idea to put the foil on it. She looks thoughtful. Do you think she is dreaming of taking part in a photo challenge one day?
It is not as essential to do meal planning for one, is it? I find that when DH is away, my biggest concern is to remember to eat properly when the frozen leftovers run out!

    1. She seems to like it, Bushlady. She was in the garage with me, briefly, earlier in the afternoon, but, went back to her box even before I left the garage. But, the side door is still ajar if she changes her mind. I think she might be dreaming of sunny days when she can sleep under the lemon tree. She has been in one or two photo challenges in the past. :)
Meal planning for one is not essential unless one wants a lot of variety. I tend to get into a very boring rut (even more boring than having the same leftovers for several days in a row) when I don't meal plan. Then, I snack and gain weight!

  9. Thank you for giving Mama cat a place to get in and out of the rain and cold. I'm sure she appreciates it more that a visit from Chicken Little. :)

    1. My pleasure, June; I feel so sorry for her being out in the rain, and as I said, I've left the garage door ajar for her, but, she seems to prefer her box. She mostly ignores Chicken Little and the possums, but, she hissed at the three raccoons who were here, earlier (they mostly ignored her; but, I checked to see what she was hissing and growling at). However, she doesn't seem to mind when only one raccoon visits (there was one, last night, and Mama Cat slept without feeling threatened).

  10. You mama cat is so cute! Bless you for providing her with shelter. I hope the rains weren’t too bad for y’all. I also hope your daughter is feeling better soon! It’s crazy what a change in the atmospheric pressure can do to a body. Your desserts look delicious!

It rained a bit more, today, but, so far, both my daughter and I are doing OK. She still has a bit of a lingering headache, but, she says she's OK. The desserts were delicious!

  11. Lucky Mama Cat! I have to make new boxes for the Poor Cats this year. They are more to protect their food from rain, as they have a shed to go into for shelter, but they prefer to be outside to eat. Maybe it's to do with being able to escape quickly? I make them from wooden orange boxes covered with strong bin liners. The last ones have lasted three years, but the wooden slats are starting to rot.

    1. Thank you, FD; we have a soft spot in our hearts for Mama Cat. :) You are kind to make boxes to shelter the Poor Cats' food from the rain. I am assuming the Poor Cats are strays or feral cats that you are feeding?

  13. I'm glad you got the rain you did and you weren't affected by it.
Although I wish it was a little more stretched out over a few days.
Very good quick design on your part to protect Momma Cat. I like the foil idea on the top.
I hope your Aunt C got someone to tend to her roof.
New cat? Oh gosh, I'm intrigued.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Well, we've had a week or so to dry out before the next deluge which is forecast for next week, Monday through Wednesday!
The whole outside of the box is covered in foil and so far, it seems to be keeping the box dry.
Aunt C said they got someone to put a tarp over the roof (it's the den which seems to have a fiberglass roof rather than a regular, shingled roof).
Yes, there's a new calico cat hanging around, much to Mama Cat's displeasure!
