February Grocery Shopping Part 2

Today's Grocery Shopping

I ordered groceries this morning and picked up the order in the afternoon.

February grocery shopping part 1, done on February 12, is here.

I bought:

1 cucumber, reg. price $0.89, with $0.40 off coupon = $0.49

3 bananas (0.83 lbs) @ $0.68/lb. = $0.57

2.24 lb. grapes @ $1.99/lb. with digital coupon (reg. price $3.69/lb) = $4.46

1 loaf multi grain bread = $2.99
(store brand bread was $2.49, but, not available for pick up; delivery only)

1 box 16 oz. saltine crackers = $2.29

1/2 gallon milk = $2.79

1 small container of plain yogurt (5.3 oz) = $1.00
(the larger containers of yogurt were not available for pick up; delivery only.  I'll use the small container as a starter for a batch of homemade yogurt)

1 container (16 oz.) dry roasted peanuts = $3.29

1 lb. ground beef, reg. price $6.29, on sale for $5.99, with $2.25 off coupon = $3.74
(1 lb. ground turkey was on sale for $3.99, but the ground beef was cheaper with the coupon)

1 vegetable oil (40 fl.oz.) = $3.99
(I had asked for the 48 fl. oz. store brand oil and they substituted the brand name oil, which is less quantity, but, sells for $4.99)

3 cans tuna in water, on sale for $1.00 each, with a $0.50 off purchase of 3 coupon = $2.50

5 gallons purified drinking water, @ $1.39  = $6.95
(although only one is shown in the picture, above)
California redemption value (recycling deposit) = $0.50

1 frozen pizza, reg. price $6.49, with digital coupon = $3.49

Total spent = $39.05

According to the store receipt, my groceries would have cost $51.68 but I saved $12.63 with sales and coupons.

My February grocery budget (for food, only) is $100
Total spent to date: $3.00 (for a loaf of bakery bread), $40.36 + $39.05 = $82.41
Balance remaining (to be carried over to March) = $100 - $82.41 = $17.59

"Did you buy any tuna for me?"

I baked the pizza after I came home and had a slice of it for brunch (eaten at 4:00 p.m.)  I plan to freeze some of the pizza for later.

And that's my grocery shopping for February.  How did you do with your February grocery shopping?  Were you able to keep to your budget?

  1. I had to smile at Dancer checking if his tuna had arrived. Tilly is the same when my groceries are delivered, she watches me put everything away and when I go to her treat cupboard she gets excited. Yes really, she has her own cupboard :-)

    1. He was very curious to see what I had bought! That's sweet that Tilly has her own cupboard! :)

  2. I gave up on a budget - perhaps I should try again. I do make a list, and try not to go "off list" but I'm not very good at that either. Prices here have rocketed, and we're of course buying food and litter for 4 cats. It mounts up very quickly - especially as they are quite fussy about what they'll eat. (At least they like mid-range food and don't insist on the really expensive stuff!!) Love FD xx

    1. I like to have a budget, or a spending plan as I call it, because then, I don't feel guilty about spending money! I have a separate budget for Dancer's expenses (food, litter, vet, medicines, etc.)and, believe me, I spend more on him, right now, than I spend on myself! LOL. But, he's worth it. He's fussy, too! :D

    1. LOL, I know what you mean, Chris; I wanted to order some chocolate chip cookies, but, I decided to be good and get grapes, instead! :D This store offers delivery services, too, but, you have to pay a fee; the pick up is free as long as you have a minimum of $35 purchase total.

  4. Does Dancer eat anything else besides tuna?

    1. LOL, yes, he does! He has his choice of two types of kibble (one is for indoor cats) always available to him and canned cat food. He is being very picky, right now, and I'm giving him whatever he's consenting to eat because he's losing weight and his vet would like him to gain a bit more weight. Some days, he's off the canned cat food and then, I give him tuna. Other days, he's off the tuna and then, I give him the canned cat food. Often, there is a buffet of 3 or 4 different bowls with different flavors of food for him to pick and choose (the garden cats are not fussy and will happily eat whatever Dancer decides he doesn't want!)

  5. You got a nice array of groceries at good prices. Across the country from you, we had similar deals (including frozen pizza for $3.99). 😊 I spent about $360 in February, spread out over 4 shopping trips. This is low for us! We ate out once at a restaurant, ordered take-out pizza once, and I ate at a wine & cheese reception one evening. These aren’t counted in grocery spending. The dinner out and pizza both generated several delicious leftover meals. In March, I will continue to use up some pantry items.
    Happy leap-day!

    1. Thank you, Taconix. Sounds like you had some good deals, too and kept your grocery spending to an amount that is good for you. Well done! I, too, don't include eating out in my grocery budget. Before the pandemic, I budgeted $75/month for groceries for myself and $25 for eating out/take out. But, these days, I rarely eat out or get take out so, I added that $25 to my grocery budget to make it an even $100. What I do is, every so often, I'll get a splurge item and have that instead of eating out. :)
Happy leap-day to you, too! :D

  6. Hi Bless, Yes, I was. You got some excellent deals. I am harvesting blood oranges and Meyer lemons right now, so that helped with the fruit costs. I also have plenty of fresh oregano, sage, rosemary, and other herbs for tea. Shopping at Aldi has really helped me to reduce what I spend.

    1. Having our own fruit and herbs (and later, vegetables) is a great help, isn't it? I have an Aldi not too far from me, but, I have never shopped there. I just checked their weekly ad and they have some good meat prices, this week. :)

  7. You did well with coupons and sales, and I'm sure Dancer will be happy to know that you even got a reduction on his tuna. With the cooking oil substitution you are still ahead on the price per fl.oz. It would have been nice if it had been 48fl.oz for $3.99 though!

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. :) Yes, it would have been better if I was able to get the larger bottle of oil at that price, but, I'm not complaining. I am currently on my last bottle of oil and I wanted to have at least one spare bottle in the pantry. :)

  9. Gosh, I see by the post titles, you've already shopped for March and I'm just now reading about the last shop of February!
I need to get caught up :(
You finished up February's grocery budget with a credit balance so you are continuing on your path of staying under budget. Good job!
I was just a tad over but still an acceptable amount for us I think.
January I was under so that was pleasing.
Yes Dancer, don't worry, there is tuna for you.

    1. It's OK, Debra; take your time. I hope the recent weather has not caused any problems for you. Yes, I came under budget in February and I carried it over to March. I did do my first grocery shopping for March, already, but, you'll see why when you read on. :) Sometimes, you come in under budget one month and then, go over the next, but, it all evens out in the end, I think.
