After the Rain

New Leaves on the Loquat Plant

The rain stopped on Wednesday!  It was a mostly cloudy day, but, the sun tried to shine through the clouds.  Gardener M was here a little after 11:00 a.m. to tend to the garden.  He did some weeding and pruned the star jasmine vine.  The old wooden trellis it had been growing on had rotted and collapsed, so we pulled it out.  I will buy a new trellis for the vine once I decide on one that I like.

I had leftover French toast and bacon for brunch on Wednesday and for dinner, I had leftover rice and sausage stir fry followed by an apple for dessert.

On Thursday, it was bright and sunny, without a cloud in the sky.  I made a wreath with some bay laurel sprigs that M had pruned from another client's garden, texted with a cousin's daughter and helped her to identify some of the people in an old family photo, did a few household tasks, crocheted another granny square, and read.

I finished the last piece of French toast and bacon for brunch; dinner was freshly cooked rice with chicken curry and peach chutney; another apple for dessert.

I am grateful for:

- A couple of sunny days
- M's help with the garden
- The garden is thriving after all that rain, with new growth and flowers
- Library books to read
- Emails, texts, phone calls, etc., with family and friends

Joyful activities have included gardening, reading, crocheting, and wreath making.

Hellebore Flowers

Plans for Friday include more reading, maybe doing a load of laundry, and more gardening with M in the evening.

How is your week coming along?  Any special plans for Friday?

  1. I'm a fan of Hellebore plants/flowers. Yours looks lovely. I have just one in my garden, which is white & I'm on the search for some pink & or burgundy flowered ones. No special plans for Friday, I am hoping for a quiet day. You will have to show us the wreath you made from the bay laurel sprigs. :)

    1. I hope you find the pink or burgundy flowered hellebores, Mary-Lou. This is the only hellebore plant that I have and it was from my gardener M. I'm hopeful that it will self-seed and multiply, now that we've planted it in the ground (used to have it in a pot).
I also hope you have a quiet day and a lovely weekend ahead.
Yes, I'll post a picture of the wreath. :)

    2. Oh, I have more than enough self-set hellebores (white and purple) to spare! Constantly digging them up ... along with the brambles that you keep saying you want. My prices really are quite reasonable! ;o)

    3. Oh, I wish I lived closer to you! I'd have come over and relieved you of some of those hellebores seedlings and, even more, the blackberry brambles! I love blackberries! Do you know how much a 6 oz. container of blackberries cost over here? $3.49 on special, this week; $4.29 if you want organic (I just checked the store's website).

    4. Gosh... I can say with certainty that I have never paid money for a blackberry! The freezer is constantly stuffed with them!

    5. Lucky you! :) I've quite a few blueberries in the freezer because my plants produced a bumper crop, last summer, but, I don't have any blackberries. You'll have to bring some with you when you visit. :)

  2. I hope you can find a nice new trellis for your star jasmine vine. I have a white one for one of my climbing roses and it looks nice against the brick wall. I have some old family photos too and it's hard not being able to identify who some of the people are, I'm glad you were able to help your cousin's daughter. I forgot to say in your previous post how nice your French toast looked :)

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I saw one that I liked, but, I think it is too tall for the spot; I wouldn't want the wind to knock it down! Your white trellis against the brick wall must look lovely, especially when the roses are in bloom. Old photos with unknown people are nice to look at if only for the clothes they were wearing, but, it's better if one could tell who the people were! I was glad to be able to help my cousin's daughter - some of the old aunts and uncles looked so young! :D
Thank you! The French toast is all gone, now! :)

  3. More beautiful plants! Your gardening sounds wonderful.
Thursday was a day of sorrow and joy. Our visiting grandcat (daughter’s oldest cat in the world) died in her sleep. I am happy that she died peacefully. We will all miss her; she was a part of the family for so many years. I had tickets to see a play with my sister, so we went into the city. The play included a theme of the family dog’s death. It was comforting to me, paradoxically, and I’m glad I went.
I have a little work from home this so-far rainy Friday morning. Then a little housework will round out the day.

    1. Oh, Taconix, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of the visiting grandcat! At least, she died peacefully in her sleep. (((HUGS))) I'm glad you were able to go to see the play and that you found the theme of the family dog's death was comforting rather than sad, under the circumstances.
Sounds like a good way to spend a rainy Friday! It's sunny here, today, and warmer (high of 73F), which makes me happy! :D

  4. Hellebores are one of our earlier blooming flowers here, but no signs of blooms yet on mine.

  5. That is a lovely hellebore. Does the loquat plant get fruit? I haven't had a loquat since childhood!

    1. Thank you, Celie. The loquat plants are still seedlings (neighbor S shared two of the seedlings her aunt started for her); maybe they will start bearing fruit in another couple of years. It's been a long time since I've had loquats, myself (my tree died a few years ago).

  6. It's always good to see new leaves on a plant. I have a new leaf coming on my orchid, now that the flowers are done. I like the delicate green of the hellebore flowers.

    1. I get excited when I see new leaves on my plants! How wonderful to have a new leaf coming on your orchid! Lucky you!
I have never been successful growing orchids.
The hellebore flowers on my plant started out cream colored, but, they seem more green now than cream!

  7. Those loquat leaves are pretty with the lighter underside.
The wreath you made with the bay laurel leaves must be nice. What a varied and fun thing it is to see what M brings you from other gardens.
And there are those pretty greenish/white hellebore flowers you have. My favorite hellebores.
Did he bring you them too? I think he did.

    1. I liked the contrast of the new loquat leaves against the older ones. :)
I posted a picture of the bay leaves wreath; you'll have to read on to see it. :) Yes, M brought that hellebore plant; I think half the plants in my garden are what he brought me! :D
