Friday was mostly sunny. I left the house just before noon to go to my appointment with the oncology nurse practitioner and got to the clinic (in downtown Los Angeles) 15 minutes before my appointed time. I had to wait for another half an hour or so before I was actually seen, but, that was okay. I had taken a book with me to read and I spent the time reading. I had a good check up and the blood test results were mostly good. Then, I had to wait a little longer before I received my injection.
I was in the examination room when I felt the shaking; apparently, there was a 4.6 earthquake a few miles north of Malibu! Fortunately, no damage from the earthquake, according to the news.
It was about 3:00 p.m. when I left the clinic (parking cost $12). On the way home, I stopped at a small Armenian grocery store and bakery to buy a loaf of their bread:

They only had one loaf of bread left and I was happy to pay $3 for it. Their bread reminds me of the type of bread we used to have in Sri Lanka when I was growing up. It was just after 4:00 p.m. when I got home. There were messages from one of my cousins and from my aunt, sent after the earthquake, asking me if I was OK (aunt had called three times!) So, I called them back to reassure them that I was OK and had been at a doctor's appointment.
By then, I was hungry! I hadn't eaten anything all day (I had a cup of tea before I left in the morning and, although I took some cookies with me for a snack, I didn't eat them). So, I cut myself a couple of slices of the bread and had a slice with some deli meats/cold cuts I had in the fridge. I had the other slice with some dhal that I warmed up. Bread and dhal is comfort food for me!
M arrived to tend to the garden shortly after that and he divided up and repotted the red aloe plant. We decided to wait until the aloe vera plant flowered to divide and repot it.
On Friday, I was grateful for:
- A good appointment with the oncology nurse practitioner
- Mostly good blood test results
- Access to medical care and having health insurance
- A safe drive to the clinic and back
- M's help with the garden
- It was a small earthquake and there was no damage from it
Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.
Plans for tomorrow include reading and doing some laundry.
How was your Friday? What are your plans for Saturday?
Your daughter is so talented, I really like the bowl of crocheted flowers, so clever that they are coasters. I'm glad your appointment went well apart from the earthquake. Your loaf of bread looks nice, I'm sure it was very tasty.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eileen; my daughter takes after my mother! My mother loved to crochet, too (as did her mother!) It's always reassuring when the doctor's appointments go well, isn't it? I like type of bread; the only problem is, I tend to eat too much of it because it is so tasty! :D
DeleteI read about the earthquake and wondered if it affected you. Glad everything was okay. The bread looks good. Is there anything special about it?
ReplyDeleteI felt the earthquake, but, that was all. The bread tastes like homemade bread, crusty and different from the regular sliced grocery store bread. It reminds me of the bread I used to eat as a child. :)
DeleteI have fond memories of homemade bread as a child, too. We didn't have it all the time, but it was a real treat when we did.
DeleteThe only problem with this bread is, I tend to eat too much of it and it doesn't keep long! :D
DeleteGood to hear that you weren’t bothered by the earthquake. I was wondering about you when I heard the news.
ReplyDeleteThe loaf of bread looks nice and sort of old-fashioned. It’s fun to pop in and see what other shops are selling. 🍞
Your daughter’s crochet work is so neat and precise. I love the little coin purse; it looks like something from a gift boutique. The flowers which open into coasters are brilliant. They’re beautiful and useful! So clever.
I had telephone calls with both daughters almost every day this week. Having often read that you are grateful for your video chats with your daughter has raised my awareness of the gift I receive each time I talk with the girls. 🥰
It will be a quiet Saturday here. Husband is taking our car in for an oil change and state inspection. Other than the usual daily chores and activities, my dance card is free. 😊
Thank you, Taconix; yes, I'm fine, the earthquake didn't affect me. :)
DeleteI like this type of bread; it does look and taste a bit old fashioned, doesn't it? It tastes like good, homemade bread. They had another type of bread that my neighbor S often shares with me, which I also like; maybe I'll buy that, next time.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy almost daily phone calls with your daughters, this week. It's a blessing to be able to speak with our grown daughters on a frequent basis, I think. When I first came to this country, my mother was living and working in Hong Kong and overseas phone calls were expensive and reserved for special occasions; we communicated through weekly letters. How I would have loved to have had the ability to video chat with her!
Sounds like you need to fill up your dance card and do something fun this evening. :)
Thank goodness the earthquake wasn't too serious. I hope any further quakes will be minimal.
ReplyDeleteI've just been enjoying a lovely catch up with your posts.. It's great that the watering bags have been replaced. Fingers crossed they will stay in position for a lot longer than the previous ones, although from the sounds of it they haven't been needed recently. I hope the rain has eased by now, and that Aunt C has been able to enquire about getting her roof repaired.
Your daughter's crochet work is amazing. Who would have thought those flowers turned into such delightful coasters! I'm sure the recipient would have been thrilled with them. X
Yes, hopefully, the quake we already had wasn't a "pre-quake"!
DeleteThank you; I thought the coasters were brilliant! :)
I love those floral coasters that can decorate a bowl with a bouquet! The coin purse is neat, too. So glad it was only a minor earthquake, but they are always disturbing, aren't they? I think I might have bitten into that lovely bread in the car after fasting for so long!
ReplyDeleteThe coasters are cute, aren't they? They can be a decorative item when not in use! Yes, even minor earthquakes are a bit unnerving as you wonder if a bigger one is on the way! The aroma of the bread was very tempting! :)
DeleteThe crocheted flowers to coasters are so cute and very creative! Your daughter is very talented! I'm glad your appointment went well, and the quake was minor.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Celie. My daughter said her gifts were well received.
DeleteI'm very relieved that the appointment went well and the quake was minor! I'm also glad that I was with others when the quake took place; somehow, these things feel worse when one is alone!
It doesn't sound you are scared when there is an earth quake, you are not? i did not used to be, but we once had one shaker that made me call out for my husband, i am now more scared when i feel a slight shake and have a pair of shoes beside my bed, just in case, although it is not that i worry about it...
ReplyDeleteI'm always a bit nervous when I feel the beginning of an earthquake because I don't know how strong it will be and I wonder if it is the "big one" that people keep talking about. The strongest one I've experienced was a 6.7 magnitude shake (1994 Northridge earthquake). I'm less nervous if I am with people than if I'm alone. I, too, sleep with a pair of shoes by my bed, a flashlight under my pillow, and a hard hat nearby in case the ceiling falls down on me!
DeleteOoh - glad no harm was done. I have probably said this before but I got really blase about earthquakes after several years in Japan. I'd just sleep through them, often completely unawares until people mentioned them the next day. Even in daytime I'd feel a tremor and barely react (unless it went on too long). Last time I was in Japan I stayed with a friend in Saitama-ken and when he showed me up to my room he drew my attention to the lantern, torch, whistle etc. all laid out beside my pillow in case the worst happened. It was a kind of double-take moment, when I realised that even within the same country, the level of danger and corresponding attitude, can vary. I'd completely forgotten that.
ReplyDeleteElla
Yes, I was glad that the earthquake was fairly small and there was no damage. Of course, stuff fell off the shelves in grocery stores, etc., closer to the epicenter, but, nothing had fallen in my house when I came home. That was kind of your friend to show you all the items kept in readiness, just in case they were needed! I like the idea of having a whistle! I think I'll add that to the torch and hard hat I keep near my bed. :)
DeleteWhat a cute gift your daughter made for her friend. It does look like a bowl of flowers. Very clever.
ReplyDeleteOh gosh - I'm glad there was no damage from the earthquake and you are fine.
And you stopped for a nice fresh loaf of bread - which you needed!
How did you feel while you were shopping in person in that store?
I imagine you were very hungry when you got home and the bread must've hit the spot.
Thank you, Debra; I've put in a request for a set of crocheted flower coasters for myself, too! :D
DeleteYes, very relieved and thankful that there were no damages from the earthquake.
I felt very comfortable shopping that that store. It is a tiny store, and the only other people in the store were the cashier and the guy behind the deli counter and they were both at the far end of the store, chatting, while I selected the bread at the front of the store. Then, the cashier came up to ring up the purchase and as I was paying for the bread, another customer walked in. The prices in the store are a little high (although they used to have seasonal fresh fruit on sale at very good prices from time to time, prior to the pandemic), but, I could see myself shopping there, again. Their bread is delicious!
