Cloudy Sunday

Asparagus Sandwiches

When Aunt T, the great-grandmother of the boy whose birthday we celebrated on Saturday, was alive, she was famous for her asparagus sandwiches.  They were her signature dish and she used to make them for parties.  On Saturday, her younger daughter, my cousin R, decided to make some of her mother's asparagus sandwiches for the party - slices of bread spread with a mixture of butter, grated cheese, mustard, and minced green chilies and rolled around a spear of canned asparagus (we always used canned asparagus because fresh asparagus wasn't available in Sri Lanka and, in my opinion, these sandwiches just don't taste the same with fresh asparagus).  So delicious!  My cousin gave me a few to bring home with me and I ate a couple of them for my dinner, and I ate the other two for my breakfast on Sunday morning.

Sunday has been a cloudy day with light rain in the late evening.  There is more rain in the forecast!

I spent a rather relaxed day, partly because I just didn't feel like doing anything!  Eventually, however, I did a load of laundry (dried part of it in the dryer and hung up the rest to air dry) and I persuaded the robotic vacuum to clean the family room, operating the vacuum manually because it refused to connect to the internet!  I've tried all the steps suggested, including checking the other devises (computer, etc.) to see if they had a connection (they did!) and resetting the connection, with no luck.  I even dusted the charging station, thinking that there might be some dust that was interfering with the connection, but, that didn't do anything, either.  I will have to wait until my daughter comes down, next, and maybe she can figure it out.  In the meantime, I am able to operate it manually by pushing the buttons and that works well enough for me.

I also made a grocery list and added some items to my online shopping cart, but, I didn't finalize it.  I finished my cucumber and two of the three bananas I bought, but, I have frozen vegetables and plenty of apples in the fridge (and oranges on the tree).  I might wait until next week, when the new grocery sales take effect, to order more groceries.

Former neighbor T called when I was putting the laundry away and we chatted for a bit.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.

Sunday's meals were asparagus sandwiches for breakfast, a bowl of some of the ham and lentils soup for lunch, a yogurt roti and chicken curry for dinner.  I had a slice of Sri Lankan "rich cake" (a type of fruit cake, based on the British Christmas cake, with the addition of more traditional Sri Lankan preserved fruits like chow-chow and pumpkin preserves and without any alcohol) for dessert.  I had bought it from the Sri Lankan store back in December, but, we had so many other sweets and desserts that I kept the cake in the fridge until today.

On Sunday, I was grateful for:

- A relaxed day
- Working appliances
- Phone calls and emails from friends
- Delicious meals and treats
- Rain for the garden

Sunday's joyful activities included playing online games and video chatting with my daughter.

Monday is a federal holiday, here (Presidents' Day), but, since I'm retired, every day is a holiday!  LOL.  Plans for Monday include cooking, reading, and maybe some paperwork if I feel like it.

How was your Sunday?  What are your plans for Monday?

  1. Your asparagus sandwiches sound nice but I have only ever seen fresh asparagus here and never in a tin.
Strange how your robot won't connect to the internet. Maybe your daughter may have some suggestions for you to try rather than wait for her to visit just in case there is a fault and it needs to be returned to the retailer. There's usually a time limit here for retailers to replace or fix faulty items. Good luck with getting it to behave.

    1. That's interesting that you don't have tinned asparagus. But, fresh asparagus season is almost here, isn't it?
Yes, maybe there is something with my internet connection (every so often, my laptop will disconnect itself from the internet and I have to restart the computer) or I just don't know how to operate these "intelligent" machines! One time I called my daughter when the vacuum refused to connect to the internet and of course, the moment I got her on the phone, the thing decided to connect and it worked without any problem! :D Daughter should be coming down next month and maybe she can figure it out, then, or contact the company to complain!

  2. Perhaps when you are out in the garden or with friends, Dancer is riding about on your robotic vacuum! I've seen many videos where cats seem to enjoy the ride, so maybe there's a button pushed from Dancer's rides (lol). Recipes are one of the best things to pass on to family, enjoying food & remembering are, IMO, some of the best ways to honour a person.

    1. Dancer does not like vacuum cleaners! All he has to do is hear me pull out the big vacuum cleaner and he'll run and hide from the monster! He tolerates the robotic vacuum when I first get it out, but, he'll leave the room in a hurry when it actually starts vacuuming! I can't imagine him sitting on it to go for a ride!
Recipes passed down the generations are wonderful, aren't they? There was another beef stir fry type of dish that another member of the family made, based on her mother's recipe, that was served at the party on Saturday. :)

  3. Mmm, the asparagus sandwiches sound like a great combination of flavors. I love both fresh asparagus and canned asparagus.
Today is another holiday for us. I share a birthday with George Washington (February 22nd), so I have always enjoyed getting a Monday off close to my actual birthday.
I will do the grocery shopping today. Although it’s a short list, we want to get some fresh produce so I won’t hold off for a week, tempting as that may be.
It’s sunny in New York , but very cold so your cousin’s grandsons may find it “Frozen” upon their return. ⛄️

    1. I like canned asparagus for this sandwich and fresh asparagus for everything else I make with asparagus.
Oh, you get two Mondays off, then! Happy birthday on the 22nd!
I hope you find all what you need at the grocery store and enjoy the sunny, if cold, day. It's a rainy day, here, and the forecast at 2:00 p.m. calls for high winds, "soon". It's a good day to stay indoors and read my library book! :)

  5. I love asparagus and those sandwiches sound delicious. I would probably leave out the chilis since I don't like hot food, but I'll have to give them a try sometime.

    1. You can definitely leave out the green chilies, June, and they'll still taste good. :)

  6. It is nearly lunchtime so the asparagus sandwiches are appealing to me. Perhaps it is time to get in some cans.
Maybe you should rename your robot vacuum "Rebel" since it isn't behaving!
I had a fairly relaxed Sunday, too. I didn't get in a proper walk at all, unless one counts walking to and from church from the parking lot (I try not to park too close).

    1. The asparagus makes a good vegetarian sandwich filling if one wants something a little different. :)
I might consider changing its name at this point! I've already told it that for a supposedly smart vacuum it isn't very smart at all!
I think it's fine to have relaxed Sundays. After all, Sundays are supposed to be days of rest, aren't they? :)

  7. Yes, I know what you mean about being retired. Those asparagus sandwiches sound delicious. I will have to try making that sort of recipe. It sounds kind of like avocado toast.

    1. Every day is a holiday when you don't have to go to work! :D I don't like avocado toast (or avocado in salads, etc., or guacamole); I only like avocado pudding made with ripe avocado and condensed milk! But, it's very sweet and I don't eat it much, any more.

  9. The asparagus sandwiches sound good. And they remind me of appetizers I have enjoyed over the years made with Pepperidge Farm white bread. I'm sure other bread could be used by PF white bread was (and maybe still is) a particularly strong and solid white bread that lended itself to being rolled with a rolling pin. Then you'd add stuff on top, roll them up, rut them out etc and bake them. Lots of varieties and I liked them all. This was decades ago but your mentioning your white bread one got me to remembering.

    1. Oh, those PF white bread appetizers sound delicious, too! Especially if they were baked! I had one of those electric toasted sandwich makers and used to make toasted sandwiches from time to time (gave the gadget to my daughter to take to her apartment with her).
