"Hurriquake"!

When it rains, it pours quakes!  We have Hurricane turned Tropical Storm Hilary passing through our area and we experienced a 5.1 earthquake, with the epicenter in a city called Ojai, which is several miles north west of me.  Apparently, some people are calling it a "hurriquake" on social media!  It is considered a moderate earthquake and, apparently, there were some "pre-quakes" on Saturday and there is a small possibility that there could be a stronger aftershock to follow, in which case, what we felt today would be considered a pre-quake to that one.

It's been raining all day with the heavier rain falling in my area around 6:00 p.m.  Power went out for about 2 1/2 hours.  I had just finished cleaning the kitchen and had made some toast for tea when the power went out.  I cleaned the litter box, quickly, before it got too dark.  Then, I lit some candles and played the piano until the power came back on.

According to the news, several areas have experienced some localized flooding.  Some of the intersections in my neighborhood have flooded, too (one badly enough to be on the news!), but, they usually flood whenever we have any measurable rain.

They are forecasting high winds, later tonight, but, so far, things have been fairly reasonable.  Just a lot of rain.

Hopefully, the forecasted high winds won't do too much damage and hopefully, the power will stay on.

Thank you, everyone, for checking on me.

  1. So glad you appear to have survived with minimal disruption. It made me smile to read you lit some candles and played the piano - I remembered Liberace, and wondered if you were wearing a glittery jacket as your fingers moved gracefully across the keys. I hope Dancer was not distressed by the storm. Perhaps the music was soothing.
It was very hot here yesterday. We had a church bbq lunch, then sat in the garden for tea at my daughter's cottage. Despite my sunhat, I ended up with a headache.
    Keep safe, my friend! ❤️๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‘

    1. Thank you, Angela. Yes, we made it through the storm, Dancer and I, in more or less one piece! I'm waiting for you to sew me a cloth of gold cape to cosplay Liberace! :D
So sorry to hear that you had a headache from the heat and the sun. Hope it has gone away by now. Take it easy today.

  2. There is live reporting of your storm on our BBC news channel. Just now they've reported the storm has moved out of LA and is nearing Death Valley. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers Bless xx

    1. Thank you, Eileen; yes, the storm has moved on and it is a beautiful, sunny day, today. Other parts of the area have had some flooding and there is always the worry of mudslides, but, for the most part, it is a good day. :)

  3. Bless I hope all continues to be well in your part of the world. Seems Mother Nature is throwing a lot at you currently. What a lovely way to spend the power outage, playing your piano.

    1. Thank you, Mary-Lou. All is well, here, in my own little spot on this earth. We made it through the storm! And the earthquake! It was too dark, even with the candles, to see to read or crochet, so I played the piano! :D

  4. What a storm!
I'm so glad your power came back on - 2 1/2 hours is a big block of time but at least not days, right?
I hope you wake to a much calmer situation.

  5. I saw on the news that you had an earthquake as well as the tropical storm. I hope you continue to have electricity and won't have much more to deal with than a few small branches down.

    1. Thank you, June. Yes, a moderate earthquake on top of the storm! The electricity stayed on and the storm has passed with minimal damage to my home and garden; I am very thankful for that!

  6. So glad to read that you and Dancer came through the hurricane and quake without problems. Did your outdoor cat do ok also? Playing the piano is a great way to pass the time without power!

    1. Thank you, Celie; yes, Mama Cat did well, too. I kept checking on her and she had a dry spot to perch on (the new patio table!). She ignored the cardboard box I had provided for her. Yes, there wasn't much I could do when the lights went out! The candles were good, but, it was not bright enough to read or sew.
