August Grocery Shopping - Part 1

I put in an order for groceries this morning and picked it up in the afternoon.  This is the first grocery order for August; the last time I got groceries was on July 28.

I am happy to say that I received everything I ordered and paid for, that the items on "buy 5 or more and get $1 off each" sale where included at the sale prices (I actually ordered 8 items just in case they claimed they didn't have an item; this way, even if they left off 3 items, I would still have a qualifying number of items to get the discount!  LOL!), that Ricky loaded everything in the car and didn't leave anything out (I asked him before I left the parking lot!) and, Jennifer had told him to give me $10 off my total due to the earlier mishap in July!  Woo hoo!

Here's a list of what I bought:

1 doz. large eggs = $2.99

16 oz. sharp cheddar cheese, reg. price $4.99; on sale with digital coupon = $3.49

1/2 gal. milk = $2.39

1 loaf sandwich bread = $1.79

1 box, 16 oz. saltine crackers = $2.69

1 cucumber = $0.75
1 iceberg lettuce = $1.89
1 bag, 12 oz. frozen green peas = $1.25
3 lb. bag onions, reg. price $2.99; with coupon = $2.32
2 cans, 15.5 oz.@, chick peas reg. price $1.19@, on sale @$0.79 = $1.58

4 bananas, 1.23 lb @ $0.65/lb. = $0.81
2 mangos, @$0.95 = $1.90
Red seedless grapes, 1.82 lb. @ $1.61/lb. (reg. price $3.49/lb) = $2.94
1 bottle, 64 fl. oz. apple juice, reg. price $2.69, with coupon = $2.24

10 lb. bag white sugar = $7.99

2 jars (16 oz.@) peanut butter* reg price $3.99@, on sale with multiple buy deal @$1.79 = $3.58
1 jar, 16 oz., roasted peanuts, reg. price $3.49; free with coupon! = $0.00

3 boxes, 13.5 oz @ cornflakes/cereal*, reg. price $4.89@, on sale with multi buy deal @$1.99 and $1 off 3 boxes coupon. for $1.65@ = $4.97

1 jar 30 fl. oz. Miracle Whip *"mayo like dressing" per receipt, reg. price $7.29(!); on sale with coupon and multi buy deal = $4.99

1 bag (20 oz.) frozen pork and vegetable gyoza/pot stickers = $4.99

1 frozen pizza*, 20.6 oz., reg. price $6.49, on sale with with multiple buy deal = $3.99

2 packets (5 oz. each) chocolate wafer cookies @ $1 = $2.00

1 container (48 oz.) vanilla ice cream*, reg. price $6.49, on sale & multiple buy deal = $3.99

2 bars 4.25 oz@ milk chocolate @$2.00; reg. price $3. = $4.00

(Don't you like how I put all the treats at the end?  LOL!)

* Starred items were the participating items in the "buy 5 and get $1 off each item" multiple buy deal.

In addition to the above groceries, I also bought :

5 cans of cat food at $1 per can for a picky Dancer and that is not part of my grocery budget (it comes from the Pet Supplies budget)

And a package of 4 boxes of facial tissues, store brand, for $5.99, and that, too, is not part of my grocery budget (it is from the Household supplies budget.)

In addition, there was $0.91 sales tax for the cat food and facial tissues, which also doesn't come from the grocery budget, because groceries are not taxed.

My order total (with cat food, facial tissues, and sales tax) came to $71.43 after the $10 off was applied.

The total for the grocery portion only came to $59.53

My August grocery budget is $100 plus $51.25 carried over from July = $151.25

Spent to date = $59.53

Balance left in the budget = $151.25 - $59.53 = $91.72

I baked the pizza and had some of it for dinner; brunch was some of the grapes and I had some ice cream and more grapes for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to order groceries online
- Free curbside pickup with minimum dollar amount of purchases
- I received all the items I ordered, nothing was forgotten, the sale prices were honored, and I received the $10 discount to make up for earlier problems
- The availability of groceries
- Being able to take advantage of sales

How is your August grocery shopping coming along?

  1. Grocery shopping and meal planning utterly haywire due to having all the family around! Complex dietary needs, days out, and small children (&parents) "grazing" through the day instead of regular meals has played havoc with my usually disciplined regime (also upset my digestive system!) I love them and having them here... But also looking forward to getting back to a regular pattern of eating. Today there will be 13 of us, for a family party, so hope the weather holds for our bbq in the garden.

    1. Sounds like it was a bit stressful to have your routine upset. I don't have regular meal times, myself, eating when I feel like it, but, then, there's just myself to please. :) Hope you have lovely weather for your bbq in the garden!

  2. I would love to say that I've been as organised as you have been with your shopping, but I must admit I've let things slide this month. Back to meal planning again next week. Xx

    1. Your on vacation, aren't you? I think you are allowed to be less than organized when you are on vacation/time off from work. :)

  3. What a great result, receiving everything you'd ordered, taking advantage of the offer and your earlier discount applied from Jennifer. I notice your eggs are much cheaper than ours here and I did notice your treats and why not indeed :)
I have a weekly grocery delivery and that will be arriving this afternoon.
Just to add I made some errors making my blog private but you should be able to log in now if you want to.

    1. It worked out very well and I am happy! Egg prices have come down quite a bit, which is nice. I need to keep an eye on those treats, but, they keep me sweet! :D
I hope your weekly delivery arrived with all the things you had ordered and everything was fine. :)
I have not had a problem accessing your blog, Eileen and I am glad you are still blogging. :)

  4. What kind of chocolate wafer cookies do you get? They must be good because you buy them often.

    1. They are made by a company called Bauducco; I buy them because they are the ones that go on sale! There's another brand called Voortman's that my daughter likes better and their packages are bigger, but, they rarely go on sale and they cost more per ounce. I can't taste the difference enough to want to pay more for them. :)

    2. I know Voortman's, so now I know what kind of cookies you're talking about. I am not as tempted by those kind of cookies as I am others, but do enjoy them every once in while.

  5. You got some very good buys, plus the $10 off was very nice. Are you preparing for Hurricane Hilary? The maps on news sites show it moving jus east of LA. Maybe you'll only get some rain, not too much, though!

    1. Thank you, Celie; yes, the $10 off was nice! I wasn't sure if I would get it, even after Jennifer said she'll do so! I am sort of preparing for Hilary, but, there's not much that I can do! M was here, yesterday, and he took the window a/c unit down for me because the wall gets wet when it's there and it rains. He will put some bags of mulch on the roof overhang above the walkway, too, to keep the roofing in place, later this evening. I am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be no power outages and the eucalyptus tree doesn't come down! I have my rain buckets out to collect whatever rain water I can!

  6. You had a good first shopping trip for August. $10 off!
And kudos for holding off until after mid-month.
Your cheese price was good and so was the price on your canned chick peas.
I'm glad your five item deal worked out this time. You were smart to bulk up the items just in case :)
What kind of peanut butter did you get for that sale price which was really good? I know you don't have a preference but I was wondering because of the $3.99 starting point.
Now and then I've been using the random CVS 30% off coupon to buy Jif peanut butter there which works out well when it's not on sale anywhere else.

    1. Thank you, Debra. I was pleased with this grocery shopping experience. :)
That was a good price on cheese, wasn't it? Yes, I wasn't going to give them an opportunity to short-change me on my buy 5 items deal this time! LOL. Although, with the $10 off, I was well compensated! :D
The peanut butter was Jif; I usually don't buy it because it is often more expensive than store brand. This week, they are having the store brand p.b. on sale with a digital coupon for $0.99 and I ordered 2! I will not run out of p.b. any time soon! LOL.
