A Change of Plans on Monday

Purple Granny Square

I was supposed to have gone for a flu shot, today, but, the pharmacy called to let me know that they had not received the shipment of the vaccine intended for those who are 65 years of age and older.  They thought they might get it sometime next week and didn't want me to have a wasted trip.  So, today's appointment was cancelled and I decided not to go to the pharmacy just to redeem my $5 off coupon.  I suppose I could have gone, but, I chose not to.  Maybe I might go tomorrow, instead, or just let the coupon expire.  Our county's Covid data (now published once a week on a Thursday) showed that the testing positivity rate had gone up to 10.52%.  I might go back to self-imposed isolation and not venture out unless I absolutely had to.

So, there I was, all dressed up and no place to go!  Instead of getting a flu shot and shopping for treats, I stayed home and video chatted with my step- aunt (my late step-father's sister).  She is in her nineties and had been in and out of hospital, but, still tending to her garden and cooking and as sharp as ever, although she claims she is getting a bit forgetful.  I promised to call her more often than I have been doing.

Later, I posted my meal plan for the week and crocheted another granny square.  I've completed four, so far, and started on a fifth one.

In the evening, I took the trash bins to the curb for collection, tomorrow, and walked for a bit.  Then, I checked on the garden and picked another handful of ripe tomatoes.  This year's tomatoes are the size of cherry tomatoes!

Brunch was French toast and that finished the loaf of bread I had bought (there is still a small piece of the loaf of no-knead bread I had made, though!)  Dinner was leftover baked chicken with the last of the boxed rice/wild rice mix to which I added a little bit of frozen green peas and frozen corn.  I didn't feel like having the tabouleh, so I might have it for brunch, tomorrow, instead.

By the way, this week is the All House Cleaning, which marks the end of yet another 8-week cleaning cycle.  It's when we go through each room or area of the house and declutter, tidy, and clean.  I dusted and tidied the living room today (it is the tidiest room to begin with).

Today, I am grateful for:

- The pharmacy calling me in time to let me know that the appointment had to be cancelled.
- Being able to video chat with my step-aunt.
- Tomatoes from the garden
- Weekly trash collection
- Warm days and cool evenings

Today's joyful activities included crocheting and video chatting with family.

Plans for tomorrow include tidying up the dining area and the family room.  I also want to water the back garden.

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. Following your labels - accomplishments (finished sewing a costume for my neighbour) family (daughter #1, came with Rosie and Jess for lunch - and daughter #2 and family arrived at 4pm to stay for a week) and gratitude (my sewing machine worked, and we have food and space for visitors)

    1. I love how you organized your comment, Angela. I'm sure your neighbor appreciated the costume you sewed for her and I'm sure you are happy to have family visiting and I love your gratitude lists. Enjoy the time with daughter #2 and family! :)

  2. At least the call saved you from a wasted journey. Hopefully you won't be waiting too long for the next batch of vaccine.
Another granny square! You'll have them all finished in no time. Xx

    1. Yes, I'm very thankful that they called me in time. I will call again, next week to see if they have the vaccine and then, make another appointment.
I'm planning to make at least 9 granny squares and then, crochet borders around them and join them. It will all depend on how much yarn I have in my stash, although, I have told my daughter that I might raid her stash, too! :D Or, I might buy some yarn to finish the blanket.

  3. I'm sorry your Covid rates are going up where you live. There is an 'Eris' strain of Covid here now a reminder that the virus has never fully gone away.
Your step-aunt is doing well for a lady in her nineties. I think we all get a bit forgetful as we get older, I know I do.
Yesterday was the hospital visit and today is the groomer visit for Tilly, she doesn't like it and I don't like leaving her there but needs must :(

    1. Yes, the positivity rates are going up, but, because the hospitals are not overwhelmed and the number of deaths from Covid are quite low due to vaccines and available treatments (thank goodness for that!) it is not a big concern. Which is fine unless one has existing health issues which puts one at a risk for getting complications. It just means that I have to go back to being very cautious.
I agree; my step-aunt is doing very well for her age. :)
Oh, poor Tilly having to go to the groomer! I'm sure you'll have a treat for her when she comes out and please give her a bit of extra fussing over from me. :)

  4. That was good that pharmacy gave you a call. I do hope that you are able to keep doing some of things you've been doing out and about. Does the library have any kind of service for a contactless pickup?

    1. It was very considerate of the pharmacy to give me a call, I thought. The library used to have a contactless pick up, during the shelter at home period, but, I think they've discontinued that. Life has returned to normal for 99% of the people; I'm just the odd one out who is being extra cautious. There are e-books to download if I want to - I tried it one time and didn't like it that much. I will continue to weigh my risks and do what feels safe enough for me.

  5. How good of them to let you know and not have a wasted trip. It sounds like you had more than enough to keep you occupied at home. Your step-aunt sounds like she is doing well for her age, and video chatting too, very up to date of her. That's something my Mum would never do.

One thing I don't have to do today or tomorrow is water anything in the garden, everything is sodden with all this rain we've had recently.

    1. Yes, it was very considerate of the pharmacy to call and let me know. I appreciate that! I can usually find something to keep my occupied at home! :D
My step-aunt is young at heart, I think, and open to new things. I probably would not have learned to video chat except for the fact that my daughter lives 400 miles away and it's how we keep in touch!
Lucky you to get all that rain! We usually don't get rain during the summer (I live in semi-arid southern California). We did have an unusually wet winter and spring, so I'm not complaining. :)

  6. Yes, staying safe is much more important than a coupon!. Hopefully the pharmacy will get the vaccine in soon. I love this granny square! The colors and different yarns are wonderful!

    1. Thank you, Celie; I feel it's different to shop if I am already at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription or to get a vaccine, although, I suppose the risks are about the same! Maybe I'll have another coupon when I do go for my flu shot!
The purple granny square turned out well, didn't it? Purple has been one of my favorite colors since I was a teen. :)

  7. What a pity about the delayed vaccination, so that you couldn't use the voucher today. At least you didn't get there and find out there was no vaccine. Your step aunt sounds amazing. I like the purple granny square.

    1. Yes, it was a pity, but, I'm sure it worked out for the best. I will reschedule and make sure that they have the necessary vaccine type when I make the appointment.
My step-aunt is a rather remarkable person.
Thank you, Bushlady; I rather like how the purple square turned out. It's the ribbon yarn that I cut down the middle, that I had told you about, earlier. :)

  8. Oh no. Sorry that the vaccine wasn't there. Hopefully it will be there soon. Your granny square is really pretty. Glad you managed to get out for a walk around the garden. Even if you don't go out around people too much hopefully you'll still be able to get out for a walk.

    1. Thank you, Sharon; yes, the pharmacy said they should receive the vaccine next week. I'll call again and reschedule.
I like how the purple square turned out.
I take a walk around the garden and then, walk up and down the driveway and in front of my house and neighbor T's house, most days. I don't actually go anywhere, but, that's OK. I say my prayers while I walk and it becomes a bit of a walking meditation, as well. :)

  9. Well that saved you a trip getting the phone call before you set off on your way.
You are probably wise to stay out of the store if you don't have to go in and certainly more coupons will always be available.
Our rate is now 8.4% which shows a pretty big increase. And that doesn't include the majority of testing which is done at home. Still it's a representation isn't it and it shows things headed in the wrong direction.

    1. Yes, I decided to stay at home after the appointment was cancelled; the rate here has now risen to 12.8%. The good thing is, the number of deaths have gone way down and the number hospitalized is 300+, so the majority of those getting ill are not getting severe cases of it. The problem is, should I get Covid, the chances of me being hospitalized is very high. So, I am being extra cautious. "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure" and all that! :D
