September Grocery Shopping Part 1

September Groceries

I put in an order of groceries this afternoon and picked it up in the evening.  This was the first time I grocery shopped since August 24, when I shopped in person at the Armenian grocery store.

I bought milk, bread, pancake mix, unsalted top saltine crackers, a box of 4 croissants (they gave me 3 boxes and charged me for only one!), a lettuce, a cucumber, two onions, two apples, bananas, a bottle of cranberry juice cocktail (there was a $0.10 deposit for that), chicken thighs (on sale again for $0.99/lb.), roasted peanuts, and 3 cans of tuna.

In addition, I received a free bag of tortilla chips with a digital coupon for being a "best customer" and I received a free jar of store brand peanut butter because I shopped on the weekend!

Rather than type everything as I usually do, I'm just going to copy and paste the receipt, with the UPC numbers removed:

My order total came to: $38.61

My September grocery budget = $100 + $10.45 carried over from August = $110.45

Spent to date = $38.61

Balance left in September grocery budget = $110.45 = $38.61 = $71,84

I was pleasantly surprised to receive three boxes of croissants when I ordered and was charged for only one!  What a blessing!  I checked the sell by dates, thinking that maybe they were trying to get rid of them before they expired, but, they were good until 9/25.  So, I called neighbor S to ask her if she'd like to have a box of croissants.  She was not at home, but, she told me to call her daughter N, who was at home, and ask her.  I called N and she said she'd love to have some croissants, so I took her one of the boxes.  I ate two of the croissants for my lunch and dinner and I'll have two more, for Sunday's meals.  I might freeze the remaining croissants or just eat them over the next couple of days.

I am not sure if I will go grocery shopping again, this month.  If I do, it'll be closer to the end of the month.  If not, the balance will be carried forward to October.

How is your grocery shopping coming along?

  1. Didn't you do well with three boxes of croissants and the other freebies! Good of you to give a box to your neighbour too. You do so well making use of the coupons as well. Sometimes our plastic bottles of milk leak a little as they lay them down flat for delivery and they then give them to us for free rather than take them back to the store.
I have never had one leak in my fridge because I stand the bottles of milk upright :)

    1. I really did well with all those croissants, didn't I? I was happy to share a box with neighbor S, especially since she's always bringing me treats.
I try to buy as much as I can using coupons. I try not to pay full price as much as possible.
That's good that you are sometimes given the milk free of charge because the bottles leak when laid flat. :)

  2. The only thing better than getting extra croissants would be if they had put in three tubs of ice cream. :)

    1. LOL, 3 tubs of ice cream would have been a problem because I don't have enough room in my freezer for three!

  3. You got quite a lot for so little spent. The extra croissants are a treat! I just got home from grocery shopping, and spent $109! But about $50 of that was cat needs - lots of canned food, two different large bags of dry (I mix them), and a couple of litter bags. I also had to get laundry and dish detergent, cleaner, toilet paper. It really adds up. I don't separate food or cat food from household goods in my budget. I think I did ok. My sister and her husband are coming next week to visit for the week, so I will need to get more fresh veggies. I'll go to the farmer's market for most of that.

    1. Thank you, Celie. I was thrilled with the extra croissants! You did well with your spending at the grocery store, considering you got cat supplies and other household items. I used to buy Dancer's food at the grocery store, but now, I usually get it on line, but, I know it adds up. I hope you have a good visit with your sister and her husband, next week. Fresh produce from the farmer's market sounds great!

  4. I think I like your store! They come up with some surprises at times. I'm glad you bought plenty of tuna to share with Dancer. You have some good deals. I see that the saltine crackers are a similar price to ours. However those large boxes last quite a while.

    1. They do give me some bonus items from time to time, don't they? I try to remember that when they overcharge me for something every now and then. Dancer received some tuna today and he was very happy. I splurged and bought the brand name saltine crackers, this time. I had been buying the store brand and after the pandemic they seem to be out of the unsalted top ones. Then, one day, even the salted top store brand was out of stock and they substituted the brand name one and it was so much better than the store brand that I decided I'll splurge and get the brand name ones. :)

  5. Wow, that’s an impressive array of food under $40! You paid just over half the cost of your groceries (less if you included the croissant price). Way to go!
I haven’t done well this month, despite our traveling. It’s partly due to the cost of gluten-free products which I buy for my visiting nephew (with celiac disease). He’s staying the month, watching our dogs during our past trip and our next trip. I also rushed a shopping trip and didn’t compare circular prices and digital coupons.

    1. Thank you, Taconix. I'm pleased with my grocery spending.
You've had special items on your grocery list this month and you did a rushed shopping trip, which happens from time to time. It's OK; you can get back on track, next month. :)

  6. Well done on the shopping. I need to check sales more often. Right now I'm pleased that I am doing some menu planning and cutting down on visits to the shops.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. You are doing well with the meal planning and cutting down on visits to the shops. You'll soon get around to shopping the sales and planning the meals around the sale items. By the way, a British blogger who I follow was posting her grocery spending and the prices she paid for things like bread, flour, and fruit reminded me of what you said about prices being so much cheaper over there!

  7. Twelve croissants are a lot to get through but I also wouldn't complain if I got eight free! Some extra treats, and the pleasure of sharing.

  8. Those croissants must have been a nice surprise. I'll need to do another supermarket shop at the weekend, but the meal planning is going reasonably well. Xx

    1. They were a nice surprise! I'm not complaining! I'm glad that your meal planning is going reasonably well, even if you need to do another grocery shopping trip at the weekend. I used to shop weekly, myself, back when I shopped in person. I used to enjoy grocery shopping, but, now, I've got used to ordering it online and picking it up! I'm getting lazy in my old age! :D

  9. I would imagine by now those croissants are long gone. What a nice thing to happen.
And free peanut butter and doritos too. That all adds up to a nice balanced meal, right?
You really have done well with your September budget. I will read on and see if you went to the store again or carried the amount over.

    1. Actually, I still have two rather dried out croissants in the fridge, still! I thought I could use them, sliced and toasted, to go with some soup one day, or add them to a bread pudding...The jar of peanut butter is in the cupboard; what is long gone is the bag of Doritos! I didn't go grocery shopping again in Sept.
