All Shook Up on Thursday

Dinner and Treats from Neighbor S

I was woken up just before 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, as the house shuddered and shook and the Emergency Alert system notifying me that we were experiencing an earthquake and to "duck, cover, and hold".  It was a 4.7 magnitude quake.  I listened, but, didn't hear anything fall or break, so I just went back to sleep!  I hadn't gone to bed until after 4:00 a.m. and I wasn't quite ready to get up!  I didn't feel any of the afterquakes, but, there had been at least two, according to the news.

The weather was quite pleasant, sunny with the highs only in the mid 80s (F).  I did a load of laundry including my bed sheets, made pancakes for brunch (ate them with the last of the dhal curry and some chicken curry), sorted through and tidied the second drawer in my bedside table, went through two kitchen drawers, and sorted through some of the plastic "Tupperware" type containers, and one kitchen cabinet.

Later, I called former neighbor T for a short chat, spoke with my half-sister, had a phone call from friend R, and, had a call from neighbor S who offered to bring me some salad and pastries both sweet and savory that she and a friend had made.  Me, being greedy, accepted offer quite eagerly and she brought me salad, a cheese burek (pastry), and gata (Armenian cookies).  In addition she brought some frozen egg roll/taquito type rolls that her daughter had bought and wanted to share with me.  I enjoyed some of the salad and the cheese burek for dinner and had one gata for dessert.

On Thursday, I was grateful for:

- The earthquake was quite moderate and there was no damage and no one was hurt
- Just the right temperature for me
- Phone calls with family and friends
- Neighbor S bringing me dinner and treats
- Working appliances

Thursday's joyful activities included phone calls with family and friends and enjoying the lovely food neighbor S brought me.

Plans for Friday include mopping the bathroom and kitchen floors, tending to the garden with M, and maybe vacuuming my bedroom.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday...the 13th!

  1. I guess you're used to earthquakes if you can go right back to sleep. Do you every worry about the "big one"?

    1. I don't know if one ever gets used to earthquakes, but, the moderate ones don't bother me too much. Of course, I do worry about the "big one", and every time there is an earthquake I wonder if it is the big one or a precursor to it, but, I guess I was too sleepy to worry, yesterday!

  2. When I read your post title, I'd assumed you must have experienced an earthquake. Thank goodness, it was only moderate, and that nothing was damaged, although it doesn't seem like you were too concerned, seeing as you managed to go back to sleep :)

    1. Yes, thankfully, it was moderate and no damage, although some stores near the epicenter would have lost some merchandize such as bottles of wine, etc. as things would have fallen off the shelves and broken. Nothing fell or broke in my house and I was not too concerned. :) Had it been stronger, I sleep with a hard hat and a pair of shoes next to my bed and there's a flashlight (torch) under my pillow, and I keep the space under the desk clear to crawl under there if needed.

  3. Glad it was just a little earthquake. It's amazing how philosophical one can become, isn't it? Three hours' sleep is too little by anyone's standards!

Those treats look very appetising. I suppose you have saved some for me? (You can have the salad - too much tomato!)

Your Friday plans sound very ... worthy! I have had a busy day, but not cleaning. It included a wild goose chase that took over an hour out of my evening to collect some jars that a Freecycler had advertised. I had double-checked they were definitely the kind I wanted, only to find they were most certainly NOT! This has happened to me once before and on that occasion I picked the stuff up, thinking I should because I had expressed an interest. But afterwards I thought it was not my duty to dispose of other people's rubbish so this time I just left it all there and came away empty-handed. If I had had to ring the bell and speak to the person I would have explained but in both cases the stuff was left outside and didn't want to ring the bell just to point out it was not what they said it was! Anyway it was a lovely sunny day and I also popped in on my parents so that is the plus-side!

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. Yes, I was glad that I could sleep a little longer! Later, when I watched news, one of the emergency preparedness experts were talking about keeping a whistle near you to let rescuers know you are there and I thought of you and how you mentioned that, in Japan, people always had a whistle with them.
I'm so sorry that you had to go on a wild goose chase to collect the jars. Good of you to focus on the positives.

  4. I'm glad that nothing fell during the earthquake. Nice that you could just roll over and go back to sleep. I guess people in California have learned to do that once they know nothing has broken! Isn't it good when you can enjoy delicious treats knowing that your neighbour S gets pleasure from giving them to you?

It was lovely to have the treats from S and I reiterated that her daughters are welcome to park their cars in my driveway, any time they need to. :)

  5. I'm so glad there wasn't any damage from the quakes. Those treats look wonderful. I made cheese burek once, for a party! It was very good, though a lot of work and I've not made it again. It's very nice of your neighbor to bring you food.

    1. Yes, it was very hot earlier (it has since cooled off). I'm thankful that the earthquake was fairly moderate. I do have some lovely neighbors and I try to be the same to them. Enjoy the fall season, Andrea. I enjoyed seeing your decorations, but, I think I'll wait until October to decorate for fall!

  9. We had an small earthquake here in the UK years ago. I was just going to dry my hair when the bedroom furniture shook then stopped then shook again briefly
I thought it was a heavy lorry passing by at first until I saw comments on FB. It's really rare here in the UK. Hope you are OK and nothing got damaged

    1. Hello Sally from Devon. :)
I didn't know that you had earthquakes in the UK! It must be very rare, indeed, and yet, you got to experience one!
It was not a very big earthquake and nothing was damaged, although, I guess several grocery stores had bottles fall off the shelves and break.
Thank you for visiting my blog and commenting. Hope to hear from you again. :)

I chuckled at you rolling back over and going back to sleep. You're such a Californian! Taking it all in stride.
I'm glad the quake wasn't more serious. And also glad you got more than 3 hours sleep that night!
That's quite the treat package from neighbor S.
