Monday

Voodoo Lily on Monday

The smell has mostly dissipated from the voodoo lily, when I checked on it, today.   The spathe is about a foot long.

In addition to the voodoo lily, the poppies are doing well:

Although the phacelia are coming to the end of their flowering season:

The apple seedling that I grew from a seed has leafed out, too:

Guess who I saw when I went out to check on the garden, today?  Chicken Little! It was back, eating the cat food!  It ran down the garden and hid in the corner behind the yucca plant before I could take a picture!

Today was a fairly productive day and I got most of my to do list done:
- Dust & vacuum living room & dining area✔
- Fresh flowers for the altar✔
- Clean the fridge (took everything off the main shelves and wiped down the shelves; door shelves didn't need to be done this week) ✔
- Take trash cans to the curb for Tuesday trash pick up✔
- Water the garden
- Start the car✔
- Meal plan✔

I didn't water the garden because it didn't look like it needed to be watered, but, I did a bit of weeding and mulching.

I also didn't order groceries, yet; I'm going to wait until I can preview next week's grocery ad tomorrow to see if there are any better deals than what's available this week.  All I really need are bread and breakfast cereals, with maybe another jar of peanut butter if it is on sale.  I am hoping to find peanut butter on sale for $.99/16 oz. jar, which is my stock up sale price.  Store brand is currently $2.19/16 oz. jar, but, a brand name peanut butter is on sale for $1.99/16 oz. jar if you buy 5 participating items ($2.99/jar otherwise).

In addition, I walked for 20 minutes in the evening, repaired the quilt a little, handwashed a doily my mother had crocheted (it was dusty after being displayed on one of the side tables in the living room) and did a bit of knitting (I'm making a pair of socks with leftover wool yarn).  I emailed a friend and spoke on the phone with friend R.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.

Brunch was a leftover waffle; I ate half of it with leftover chicken curry and the other half with some of my homemade peach jam.  There were freshly picked blueberries, too.

For dinner, I had a scrambled egg and katta sambol with two lavash flat breads.  I had some Armenian sweets for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:
- A sunny afternoon after a cloudy morning
- A productive day
- The car started
- Phone calls and video chats
- Garden flowers

Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

Plans for tomorrow include:
- Dust & vacuum the family room
- Do a freezer inventory
- Water the house plants (and the garden, if needed)
- Bring in the emptied trash cans
- Clean the small bathroom (this week's cleaning cycle focuses on the bathrooms and front porch; I don't have a front porch as such, just the walkway and area near the front door).

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. Were you happy to see Chicken Little again? I'm glad he is OK but wonder where he has been hiding or could it be a replacement Chicken Little? Your Voodoo Lily still looks good and I'm glad it's smell has dissipated. Housework for me over the next couple of days.

    1. I must admit that, as much as I grumble about it eating the cat food (and leaving droppings everywhere!), I was glad to see Chicken Little, because I was afraid it had ended up as the neighbors' Easter dinner! Maybe they had it in a chicken coop or, it could have been a replacement (that's what my daughter thought), but, it looks just like the previous Chicken Little! I'll try to take a picture when I see it next.

  2. Your apple tree is doing well. We used to have some red poppies, but they don't bloom any more because they are in too much shade. And they're overgrown with ground cover. Some day when I don't have anything else to do, I'm going to move them.

    1. I'm thrilled with my little apple tree! The Opal apple seed I sprouted died and I haven't tried with any of the other apples, yet. I've no idea if this one will grow big enough to bear fruit and what kind of apple it will bear (the seed is from either a Fuji or Gala apple, but, I've read that many hybrids don't bear true to kind); no matter, even if it never gets any fruit, I'll be happy with the tree. Both apple blossom and leaves are edible and can be made into teas, etc.
Red poppies are beautiful, too, and are classic, aren't they? I hope you will be able to relocate your red poppies to a sunnier spot where they will bloom again.

  4. I didn't realize that the Voodoo Lily was so large. I've never seen Phacelia as far as I know. I looked it up and there are several varieties. Chicken Little must have been away on vacation! Our neighbours have some lovely hens but one gets beaten up on by the others. Who would have thought that chickens could be bullies?

    1. The voodoo lily doesn't look as big in the pictures, does it? It has a very interesting leaf, too. The phacelia was included in a packet of mixed wildflower seeds and it crowded out the other wildflowers! But, it has returned a couple of times since we first planted it and, apparently, it is grown as a green manure in some places! The bees just love it!
I was happy to see Chicken Little; I wondered if it had become someone's Easter dinner as it went missing around Easter! Ha, ha, chickens have a pecking order, I've read, and I guess the term "hen pecked" has a basis!

    1. Yes, it's good to know that Chicken Little wasn't dinner! It has too much personality to be dinner! LOL!
I'm loving all the flowers in the garden and the bees are loving it, too! Everything is doing so well, this year, with all the rain we had, earlier.

  6. Those poppies are gorgeous. I had some in my garden last year and they attracted lots of pollinators. Xx

    1. Aren't they lovely? This is a good year for wildflowers because we've had so much rain!

  7. The poppies look really good as does your apple seedling - that is turning into a regular plant now and soon will be a little tree :)
So Chicken Little has come home to roost. I'm glad he's ok, it's been a while hasn't it?

    1. Thank you, Debra. The poppies are so eye-catching! They are more orange than yellow and still going strong! I have high hopes for that little apple tree! I set a few more seeds aside, yesterday, to see if they will grow, too. :)
Yes! Chicken Little is visiting, again! It gave me a bit of attitude the other morning before it ran to hide at the back of the garden! LOL.
