Memorial Day Monday

The First Peach of the Season

I picked the first peach of the season, on Monday.  It looks ripe, but, it isn't fully ripe yet.  It's firm to the touch and crisp.  But, I like underripe peaches, cut up and sprinkled with what we call "lunu kudu", a mixture of salt and chili powder, sometimes, with a little sugar added.  It was quite delicious.

It was rather hazy in the morning, but, not dark and grey, and by afternoon, the sun had burned off the haze and we had some sunshine.  It had been cool in the morning, but, the afternoon was warm and it cheered me up quite a bit!

Dancer woke me up around 6:45 a.m. and I gave him some tuna, but, he didn't eat much of it.  Just a couple of licks and that was it.  I went back to bed and he slept for a bit, then, woke me up, again.  This time, I opened a new can of his salmon pate and again, he only ate a couple of mouths of it.  The third time he asked for food, I opened a can of mackerel and gave him a small amount; he ate a little bit, but, left the rest.  In the evening, when he asked for food, I tried giving him a little of the chicken soup, but, he didn't even try it.  I also boiled a few kernels of frozen corn for him.  He usually likes corn, but, not today.  However, he has been eating a little kibble from time to time, and he's drinking water and using the litter box, so, I'm not too worried about him.  Once we have the lab results for him, we'll know what is bothering him and what to do about it.

Today, I changed my bed sheets and did a load of laundry.  I dried them in the dryer and put everything away.  However, the load of laundry I did on Sunday, which I hung up to dry, has not been put away, yet!

Later, I watered the back garden, picked more blueberries and the peach:

Monday's Harvest

Neighbor T's daughter K called me in the afternoon, saying she was at her mother's house, and giving me an update about what is happening.  They are planning to have an estate/yard sale, next weekend (her brother will drive down from Colorado midweek to help her set up and move some of the items they want to keep into the storage unit they have rented).  She asked me if I'd like to come over and see the progress she has made in clearing the house and I said I'd love to.  I went over and took the opportunity to return the key to the backdoor that they had given me some time ago, when T was still living in the house.  I had never needed to use it and there is no need for me to continue to have it.

K has done a lot of clearing.  She's boxed up a few things to store for now and go through later, but, she's hoping to be able to sell most of the furniture.  I saw a new looking 2 drawer file cabinet and asked if she was selling that, too, and if so, how much she wanted for it, as I could do with another file cabinet.  She said $10 and I asked her to keep it for me (I didn't have any money on me to pay for it right then and there).  She said she will ask her brother to bring it over to my house, once he has come down.  That would be great and I can pay for it, then.  I'll probably set it up in the family room, next to one of the sofas, and it will hold all the overflow files that are currently stacked on my desk.

I'll attend the yard sale, too, just to check things out.  I don't want to end up cluttering my house with a lot of stuff, but, if they have the patio set for sale, I might buy that.

Neighbor S called to ask if they could use my recycling bin as theirs was full; I said yes, of course.

Later in the evening, I video chatted with my daughter.

Brunch was the peach, followed by a mackerel sandwich.  Dinner was the last of the soup and a piece of toast with peanut butter.

On Monday, I was grateful for:

- Dancer is eating some kibble, even if he isn't eating any wet food
- Sunshine!
- Working appliances
- Visiting with K and getting a new filing cabinet
- Peaches!

Monday's joyful activity was being out in the garden, watering.

The Peach Tree

Plans for Tuesday include my doctor's appointment.  I'm not looking forward to that because I'm worried about what the blood test results will have to say!

How was your Monday?  What are your plans for Tuesday?

  1. That's nice that you enjoyed your first peach of the season, it does look tasty. I hope Dancer is going to be OK, it's such a worry when our pets are off colour and not eating much. That sounds very reasonable for the file cabinet and good it will be brought to your home for you and I hope you are able to buy the patio set too. We have been using ours to eat our lunch in the garden for the last few days, it has it's own parasol which has been very useful as it's very hot in the sunshine. I hope your doctor's appointment goes well today.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. The peach was good, but, I will let the others ripen a bit more before I pick them.
Dancer seems to be eating a little more; he's off his wet cat food and only likes the freshly opened tuna. But, he let me know that he likes bacon, when I cooked some for my brunch! I gave him a tiny taste of the meatier portion and it was eaten with relish! Well, I'm not going to be feeding him bacon on a regular basis, but, it's good to know that he likes some things!
I'm happy with the price of the file cabinet; a similar new one costs over $100.
It's still a bit too chilly for me to sit outside, but I'm looking forward to spending time outside in the summer. :)
The doctor's appointment went well, thank you, Eileen. I need to take a follow up blood test, but, otherwise, everything else was good. :)

  2. WOW your peach tree is loaded with ripening fruit - what a gift & an especially yummy gift. I'm sorry to hear that Dancer is still feeling off. Cats can certainly be fussy eaters, but it does sound like he's still not feeling 100%. Positive energy coming your way for good blood results today at your doctor's appointment.

    1. The peach tree looks good, doesn't it? I'm hoping that I'll be able to harvest the fruit shortly. It's taking longer for the peaches to ripen, this year, because it's been so cool, I think.
Dancer is still not 100%, but, I think he's feeling a bit better. He let me know that he really, really likes bacon! :D
Thank you for the positive energy. The majority of the blood test results were good. I need to have one follow up test, though.

  3. Wow, look at that peach tree! If the critters leave them alone, I see a lot of peach chutney and jam in your future.

    1. It's a thing of beauty, isn't it? :D I am keeping my fingers crossed that the critters will leave the peaches alone! Usually, I find that birds start eating them when they get ripe, but, so far, so good. More chutney than jam, I think, and I'll probably can some in a light syrup, as well. :)

  4. I'm glad Dancer has eaten a little kibble and is drinking water. I hope your doctor's appointment today goes well and all test come back good. I'm amazed at the size of your peach tree! Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that it was a sapling? Is this the same one that bent almost to the ground from weight of the peaches? I have an empty file cabinet in my basement id happily give to you, but I'm sure it'd cost a lot more than 10$ to get it there! That is a bargain price.

    1. Thank you, Celie; yes, Dancer is eating some kibble and he even ate a little tuna, this morning. He also let me know that he likes bacon, when I cooked some for my brunch! He got a small piece of it and he had no problem eating it! LOL.
My appointment went well and most of the test results were good. There was one that needs a follow up test, so I need to do that.
Yes, it is the same peach tree that bent to the ground one year and the top broke off another year! This year, we thinned about 50% of the fruit to prevent any branches from breaking!
Yes, it would cost more than $10 to have your empty file cabinet shipped! :D I was trying to resist buying a new file cabinet, but, I think having another file cabinet will really help with corralling all the over-flow files! And the price was very affordable! :)

  5. It is amusing to notice the differences in harvest time across the US. I am in Delaware and my peach tree is just setting fruit. Small and green is the theme at this point! The tree has shed 1/3 of it's fruit and I am ok with that as there were way too many peaches on each branch. We normally harvest very late in June and through August depending on the variety at which point I imagine you will be burning up in CA. It is my first year on this property so I am excited to see which variety I have.

    1. Hi Lisa, good to hear from you again. Yes, this is an early bearing peach, developed for our very short winters and the fruit usually ripens at the end of May, early June, before the scorching summers arrive. We thinned the fruit twice, this year, removing about half the fruit in total; in previous years, we've had branches break off and one year, the top part of the tree broke off due to the weight of the fruit! I hope you have a bountiful peach crop this year. :)

  6. Lunu kudu sounds like a perfect combo for the peach. Congrats on the first of the season, hoping you get many, many more.

    1. The term lunu kudu means salt powder, but, it always has either chili powder or ground black pepper added to it. I picked two more ripe ones, today, and there was one that had fallen, as well, which had already started to spoil! I gave one of the ripe peaches to gardener M and he enjoyed it.

  7. Maybe Dancer would like to "dress for dinner". Perhaps a small bow tie attached to his collar might put him in the mood (or make him even more pernickety!). Great that you will be able to have the bargain price filing cabinet that you need.

    1. Ha, ha, Dancer dislikes having anything around his neck; he doesn't even have a collar as he refused to wear one when he tried to put one on him! He's just too fussy!
I'm looking forward to having the new to me filing cabinet! :)

  9. I am glad you were able to get a nice file cabinet from neighbor T's family. That is a good price and it sounds like you will find it very useful. Does she have a patio set? I'm not sure if you saw one or are hoping to see one. If she has one, and it's an agreeable style, you should definitely get it. You've been talking about fixing up an area outside for yourself and that would be so convenient to have it delivered from next door. - and much more frugal no doubt.
Could you call her daughter and ask about the patio set? and not wait for the actual sale to show your interest.
I would hate for you to miss the opportunity. Things like that sell quickly this time of year.
Oh Dancer, I am glad to see you eating a tad more. I do hope you are feeling better soon.
Your peach is beautiful and that tree! What a star.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, the file cabinet will be useful; I've tried to declutter my file folders, but, every time I remove one, I find myself needing to make another one!
There was a bistro style table and 2 chairs in T's yard, but, the last time I checked, there was only 1 chair. I will check to see if they still have the 2nd chair and if so, I'll let K know I'm interested in it.
I picked up Dancer's medication, today. Hopefully, that will help him.
The peach tree is quite the performer, isn't it?

  10. The first peach of the season always feels like cause for a celebration. How is the tree holding up this year? X

    1. The peach tree is holding up well, this year. We did thin out quite a lot of the fruit and I guess that helped!
