A Slow Start to the Long Weekend

Rose

Lately, Dancer has been waking me up early in the mornings (around 6:00 a.m.), either demanding to be fed or by throwing up near my bed.  On Saturday, however, he let me sleep in, so much so that, when I woke up, I worried if something had happened to him!  But, no, he walked into my bedroom and greeted me with a stretch before he started meowing for breakfast.  I opened a new can of tuna and he ate some.  I'm glad I stocked up on tuna when it was on sale!

I had my cup of morning tea and spent the rest of the morning saying my prayers, listening to some chanting of blessings, and replying to blog comments.

In the afternoon, I sewed on the quilt I'm repairing and watched some videos.  Later, I watched the news and knitted a little bit.  But, I felt like I should be doing something different, it being a long holiday weekend and all, but, I didn't know what.  In the end, I just went outside and walked about a bit in the garden.

A couple of weeks ago, I knocked over a big bottle of coriander seeds and half the bottle spilled out on the kitchen floor.  I swept up the coriander, but, I didn't want to put it back into the bottle and I didn't want to throw it out, either.  So, I scattered some in a pot and scattered the rest under the avocado tree.  The ones under the avocado tree haven't done anything, but, the ones in the pot are growing!

Coriander Seedlings

If they continue to grow, they could be harvested as cilantro leaves.  If I leave the plants to continue growing and they flower and form seed pods, then, I will be able to harvest some coriander seeds!

Tomato "Early Girl" Plants

The two tomato plants have grown well and have flowers and at least one cluster of baby tomatoes!  They need more sunshine than we've been having, lately, but, I hope we'll get a good crop of tomatoes, this year.

Speaking of crops, this is Saturday's harvest:

Saturday's Harvest

The single leaf at the top left is one of two lettuce leaves that I picked from one of the bolted lettuce plants; I had already given one of them to Dancer, as he usually likes lettuce leaves, but, today, he didn't want it.  I froze the broccoli side shoots, the pea pods, and the blueberries.  I need to reorganize my freezer, again!

I checked on the peaches, too, but, they are not ripe enough to pick, yet.  Which is fine with me as it gives me a little more time to prepare!  I have the canning jars already, but, might want to get some fresh vinegar and ginger, garlic, etc., for chutney making, with my next grocery order.

In the evening, I called and spoke with friend R and emailed a couple of friends.  Later, I video chatted with my daughter.  She had gone grocery shopping in the afternoon and had found some good deals on produce.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Dancer let me sleep in and he ate a bit of kibble from a newly opened bag
- Access to the internet
- The garden and all the lovely plants growing in it
- What I am able to harvest from the garden
- The electric space heater

Today's joyful activity was picking blueberries and a few vegetables from the garden.

Brunch had been the last bagel, toasted, spread with cream cheese.  Dinner was a small bowl of my homemade chicken and vegetable soup with the last piece of Armenian bread, followed by a piece of fried fish, rice, and salad, and the last of the fresh strawberries for dessert.

No special plans for Sunday; it's supposed to be another cooler and cloudy day.  I'll finish cleaning my kitchen (it was the cleaning area of the week) and probably continue with the quilt repairs and knitting.

How was your Saturday?  Any special plans for Sunday?

  1. I'm glad Dancer seems to be OK and maybe he was tired from his visit to see the vet so had a lie-in. I hope you have a plentiful supply of home-grown tomatoes this year, there's nothing beats the taste and I find some supermarket bought ones can be quite tasteless. Enjoy your long weekend, we plan to sit out in the garden although it's a little cooler here today.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. He let me sleep in today, too, and must have eaten his fill of kibble, because he turned his nose up at the tuna I gave him! He then used the litter box and curled up on my daughter's bed to sleep!
I'm looking forward to homegrown tomatoes!
Enjoy sitting out in your garden, Eileen; it's rather chilly and cloudy, here, and I'm staying indoors with the space heater on!

  2. That Dancer is quite the character. You really know he is around, don't you? What a good idea to plant the coriander seeds. I love cilantro and I guess I should sow some seeds, too. Are you repairing a different quilt this time?
I went to church and since DH is away, I was going to treat myself to a BLT roll to bring home, but when I went into the fast food restaurant, it was packed with people and I beat a hasty retreat and made a sandwich at home instead. It is nearly 90°F so I think I will stay indoors until it cools down. I did have a good walk yesterday when it was cooler. I wish I could send you some extra warmth!

    1. Dancer certainly makes his presence known! LOL. He let me sleep in, today, too, and I guess he ate enough kibble to not feel hungry, because he turned his nose up at the tuna I gave him!
I'm repairing the log cabin quilt I made back in the late 1970s; the red fabric I had used (my step-father's old shirt) has torn and I am replacing those pieces as well as a few others that have frayed. :)
Sorry you couldn't treat yourself to the BLT roll, but, you probably made the right decision to come home and make yourself a sandwich! Maybe you can treat yourself during the week, when the restaurant might not be as crowded. I wish you could send me some of that warmth! It's 66F at 2:30 p.m. and cloudy, I doubt if we'll reach the forecast high of 68F!

  3. I'm glad to see that Dancer is doing ok now. Maybe he was just stressed from the vet visit before. You got a good harvest from your garden! I like coriander seed but not cilantro, I'm one of those odd people who thinks it tastes like soap. But, I have planted it, and let it bolt. The butterflies love the flowers and birds the seed heads. They also seem to like dill, so I share that and let a little bolt for them. It's colder there than here!

    1. Thank you, Celie. Dancer has been rather unusually quiet today, sleeping most of the day and not at all his usual vocal self. I am a little worried about him - he refused the tuna I offered him, but, I hope he ate some kibble, earlier. Maybe he's feeling the side effects of the injection he received. I hope the blood tests show what might be ailing him.
This is actually the first time I'm growing coriander, so, it's a bit of an experiment for me. I'm not all that fond of cilantro, so I might let it bolt and see what happens. :)
Today, we went up to 66F and that was it! It's been cloudy and grey all day and I've had the space heater going. I hope it will warm up soon!

    2. I hope Dancer's labs come back good, but if there's anything wrong hopefully it's treatable. I've had two cats with chronic conditions when they got older, one with hyperthyroidism and another with kidney trouble. Both were well managed with special food and meds, and they lived long lives. I'll be thinking of you and Dancer.

    3. Thank you, Celie. Yes, the vet mentioned both those conditions, so we'll see what the blood tests reveal. :)

    1. Thank you, Celie. At least, this cooler weather is letting the roses last for more than a day. :)

  5. Your tomatoes are really growing fast. I haven't put ours in yet but plan to this week. I do love tomatoes :)
That is really something about your coriander seeds. I would never have thought to give that a try. But I will now.
I'm glad Dancer let you sleep in and he slept well himself.
When my cat was aging and had lost weight the vet told me to feed him anything he would eat. Anything. So I started giving him blueberry yogurt lol (He loved it and liked us to feed him on a spoon :) and I would make chicken for him - another favorite. Does Dancer eat people food?

    1. The tomato plants are doing great this year, compared to last year, aren't they? Now, let's just hope that there will be plenty of tomatoes, as well! Although, I've read that tomato leaves are edible, both raw and cooked! I've not eaten any yet, but, if I don't get many fruit, I might try the leaves!
As for the coriander, according to Celie's comment above, butterflies love the coriander flowers and birds like the seed heads!
Dancer does like some people food - potato chips is a favorite (I must buy a packet!), boiled corn, canned mackerel, and, sometimes, chicken (not all the time). I opened a can of mackerel today and gave him a bit and he ate it. Earlier, he had refused a newly opened can of his salmon pate. I will make mackerel curry with the rest of the mackerel as he won't eat it after the first day or so.

  6. The picture of the rose is perfection! Hopefully, you will get the results of Dancer's bloodwork back soon, so you will know if there is a problem and what you can do about it. In the meantime, hurray for sleep!

    1. Thank you, June. :)
They said the results will be available this week and the vet will call me; I suppose there will be a day or two of delay due to the holiday, but, if I don't hear from them by about Wednesday, I'll call to see what's happening. He woke me up at 6:30 a.m. today! :D

  7. Scruffy wakes me up every morning no later than 6am to go out to go potty. He comes back and promptly falls asleep. As for me...I am wide awake wishing I could nap. lol
I used to love picking blueberries when I was a kid. They grew on the neighboring farm. xo Diana

    1. I've learned to go back to sleep after I get up to feed Dancer; often, I've only had a couple of hours of sleep by then and I know I need more than that!
I picked another bowlful of blueberries, today, and the first peach (it wasn't ripe, but, I ate it with salt and chili powder!)

  8. Gorgeous rose. And I do hope Dancer get back to a better schedule, poor dear.

  9. Good idea to plant the coriander seeds and a great result! Soon you will have a nice big bunch of leaves to try carrot and coriander soup! :o)

  10. I'm glad Dancer (and you) enjoyed a good sleep. I expect he will be eating tuna at every meal from now on :)
Your harvest looks delicious. Especially all those blueberries. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. We both needed that nap! He has been declining the tuna; apparently, mackerel is the flavor and fish of the moment!
I've had a wonderful blueberry harvest, this year! I'll be baking some blueberry muffins very soon!
