In the House

The Dining Table

As mentioned earlier, this week, I am focusing on the dining room, which is located at one end of the living room and leads to the family room and the laundry room, which is off the family room.  So far, I've cleared the dining table (I had my sewing machine and a crumb piecing project at one end and some baking equipment at the other end), dusted the furniture, and vacuumed the floor.  I spread a different table cover - a longer white table cloth and a shorter purple table cloth I had embroidered a long time ago over that.  The purple table cloth was made for a smaller, oval shaped dining table I had, a long time ago.  The larger flowers at each corner have cutwork in the centers and between the outer leaves and the table cloth is hemmed with a drawn thread hem.  There's a set of matching napkins, too, with only the drawn thread hem.  My daughter has told me that I should embroider a smaller scaled flower on them.  I told her I'll think about it!  LOL.  I'll have to find some matching thread in the first place.  I looked through my cookbooks, but, didn't want to declutter any at this time.  This room is "done" for this time around.  I will tidy the laundry area for the remainder of the week.

This morning, neighbor S called me with the sad news that her mother-in-law had passed away, early this morning.   I was sorry to hear that; she had been a kind lady.  She didn't speak much English and I spoke no Armenian, but, we used to have long conversations with many hand gestures and S's daughters translating from time to time.  I sympathized with S and asked if there was anything I could do to help; she said that family and friends will be visiting and asked if they could park in my driveway if needed (it's hard to find street parking, especially in the evenings, on our street because most houses have several cars and they are usually parked on the street) and also, if they could also have the use of my trash cans.  I said yes, of course, but, I'll need the drive way free for M to park on Friday evening when he is here to tend to the garden.  But, otherwise, they can use the driveway.  I noticed that at least one car was parked in my driveway this evening.

Brunch was a tuna salad sandwich (which was not on the menu plan!) and I had more tuna salad on crackers at tea time (Dancer had a share of the tuna, too, before I made the salad).  Dinner was rice, chicken curry, broccoli leaf mallung, and peach chutney.  There are leftovers for tomorrow's dinner, too.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to help S by letting her guests park in my driveway
- Afternoon sunshine
- The electric space heater and electricity to run it
- An afternoon spent repairing the quilt
- Internet services

Today's joyful activity was video chatting with my daughter.

Plans for tomorrow (Friday) include more housework and tending to the garden with M.

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

    1. Just to clarify, it was S's mother-in-law who passed away, but, yes, she was a good neighbor and a very active person until ill health and age caused her to slow down. I'm glad I was able to visit her before she passed away.

    1. Thank you, Jozien. It will stay clean and tidy for about a week, until I decide to sew again, or bake again! :D My problem is, I don't always put things away after I am done working on a project, especially if it is an on-going project. I find it very hard to keep horizontal surfaces cleared!
Did you change your table cloths? Shall we see how long we can keep our tables tidy?

  3. Your dining table looks very nice. Sorry to learn of the loss of your friend and good of you to let the visitors use your driveway. I'm sure Dancer enjoyed his tuna, my Tilly loves fish better than chicken even though she's a dog :)

    1. Thank you, Eileen.
Yes, Dancer enjoyed his tuna! He had salmon pate (tinned cat food) this morning, but, he likes his tuna, too! :D Sounds like Tilly knows a good thing when she tastes it! :D

  4. I love the cutwork on your purple tablecloth! I'm so sorry to hear of the bereavement in S's family. Once again you are able to help out, with the use of your driveway. And now all that equipment will have to be returned by them, I suppose. Life can be hard.
I ordered some eggs from my neighbour and she invited me to pick them up so that I could see her hens, baby chicks and ducklings, and rabbits, as well as their garden. It was lovely.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. After I took the photo, I thought maybe I should have ironed the purple table cloth! :D
Yes, S's MIL had been ill for some time, but, it's always sad when someone passes away, isn't it? Allowing them to use my driveway is the least I can do. I've been thinking of what to make to take over to them. I know lots of people will be bringing cakes and pastries and I thought something more savory might be nice. I've put garbanzo beans to soak; I'll boil and saute them and that will be a different sort of snack for them.
Ooh, baby chicks and ducklings and rabbits! I'm sure you enjoyed your visit!

  5. Your embroidered table cloth is lovely with the cutwork! Your table is looking very elegant. You should have candlelight dinners, with your daughter on video "sitting" across from you!
I'm sorry for the passing of your neighbor's mother. It's a hard loss.

    1. Thank you! I'll suggest the candlelight dinners to my daughter, although she'll think I'm crazy! :D
I visited neighbor S and her two daughters, this afternoon, and took some sauteed garbanzo beans (chickpeas) over. She sent me home with more food!

  6. Oh that is sad news about S's mother-in-law. I'm sure you were happy to be able to offer your driveway and trashcans as a way to help them during this time.
Your cloth is very nice especially with your embroidery. The color is wonderful and looks lovely on your table.

    1. Yes, it was sad to hear that Mary had passed away, although she had not been in the best of health for a couple of years. Offering the use of my driveway and trash cans was the least I could do, I felt.
Thank you! My mother used to get some crafts catalogs which offered embroidery kits for table cloths and such and I didn't want to spend the money they asked to buy one. Instead, the fabric I bought cost $1/yard on sale and the embroidery thread used to be 5/$1 on sale (back in the 80s) and I drew my own design, based on something I had seen. :D

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, the drive way has been used by S's visitors over the past few days. I felt that it was the least I could do. :)

    1. I felt that it was the least I could do. So far, only one person has parked in my driveway, although that might change next week Friday, after the funeral.
