Midweek on Wednesday

Loquats

M brought me some loquats from another client's tree; apparently her tree is laden with the fruit and he was asked to help himself to some.  He shared some of it with me, with a request that I saved the seeds.  Each fruit has one or two glossy brown seeds in the middle.  We will try planting them.

After sleeping till almost noon, yesterday, I couldn't fall asleep until after 3:30 a.m., this morning.  Then, I woke up around 6:00 a.m., again!  For some reason, I thought it was much later, but, the clock said 6:00 a.m.   But, this time, I was able to go back to sleep for another couple of hours.  Even so, I woke up before the alarm went off.

It was cold this morning!  Well, maybe not cold for some people, but, it was in the low 50s (F) outside and not that much warmer inside, either.  I was tempted to switch on the gas heater, but, I huddled in front of the electric space heater, instead.  Today's high was only 61F and there's rain in the forecast for later tonight and early tomorrow morning.

In the morning, I called the cancer clinic to reschedule my appointment and set up my lab test appointment.  Tomorrow, I need to call the primary care physician's office to confirm the appointment with them.

M was here to tend to the garden, later this morning.  He brought his chain saw and pruned one of the branches of the curry leaf tree and one of the feijoa (pineapple guava) trees in the side yard towards the front.  The feijoa tree had several branches that had died, but, there was some new growth at the bottom; we cut it down to where the new growth is and hopefully, the tree will grow well.

I spent the afternoon doing paperwork.  I had got behind on sorting through and filing, etc.  I cleared the top of the side table and processed all the mail that had accumulated there.  I decluttered a few items, too.  I still need to clear the table, but, that's for tomorrow.  There are some more files to sort through and shred.

I sewed a little more on the quilt I'm repairing, but, Dancer plopped himself down on the quilt and went to sleep, so, I stopped sewing and replied to blog comments, instead!  And watched the evening news.

I didn't walk today because my back was hurting.  I walked a bit in the garden, instead, and picked more snow pea pods.

Later in the evening, I spoke with friend R and will video chat with my daughter in a bit.

Today, I am grateful for:
- M's help with the garden
- M sharing loquats with me
- The electric space heater and electricity to run it
- Daughter felt well enough to work today
- Being able to reschedule my medical appointments

Today's joyful activity was tending to the garden with M.

Thursday's To Do List:
- Call the doctor's office to confirm appointment
- Schedule the lab work for that appointment
- Paperwork/clear the table
- Clean the kitchen/sweep & mop the floor
- Load of laundry
- Dust/vacuum my bedroom

How was your Wednesday?  What are your plans for Thursday?

  1. I don't think I've ever eaten a loquat but having looked them up online they do sound delicious. I hope your back pain has eased now. Not wanting to move Dancer off the quilt so you could carry on repairing it made me smile, something I would do so as not to disturb Tilly :)

    1. One rarely finds loquats for sale at a grocery store, even here, Eileen, because they tend to bruise easily. But, they are delicious. My back is better, today, thank you. I plan to walk this afternoon (it rained this morning). My daughter laughs at me when I say I didn't do something because Dancer was sleeping and I didn't want to disturb him, but, I think many of us with fur babies tend to do that, don't we? :)

  2. I don't think I've ever had loquats. It's too cold to grow them here. I hope you have success with your seeds.

    1. Loquats tend to bruise easily, so they are not found in most grocery stores, etc. Sometimes, I've seen them for sale at the Armenian grocery store and maybe some farmers' markets might have them. I currently have two plants that are growing in the garden (I used to have a tree, but, that died). Thank you; I hope the seeds will grow; if they do, I'll share them with M and neighbor S who said her loquat seedlings died.

  3. I always find it hard to sleep when it's cold. Perhaps an extra quilt on the bed might help.
I think Dancer makes an excellent supervisor.

    1. I warmed up my rice-filled heating bag and took it to bed with me! I have so many quilts and blankets on my bed, it's almost like the Princess and the Pea with her pile of mattresses and feather beds! But, yes, I can always do with another quilt on my bed! :D Dancer is the world's best supervisor (except when he falls asleep on the project I'm working on!) LOL.

  4. I hope you manage to grow a loquat tree to add to your botanical garden! Have fun continuing to tame the paper monster! I can just imagine Dancer saying, "Excuse me, Mummy, I need the quilt right now!" I hope your back recovers.
DH drove down to the river this morning and said it wasn't any higher, thank goodness. It must be a worry for the people down there. I went to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription and enquired about booster shots as it is almost 6 months since our last one. As a result, DH and I are now on the list and will be notified when we can show up.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. I currently have two loquat seedlings growing in the garden (given to me by neighbor S). But, extra seedlings will be welcome as I can share them with M and with neighbor S, too, since her loquat seedlings had died.
Oh, my goodness, that paper monster seems to just grow and grow every time my back is turned to it! I got rid of a brown grocery bag full of paper, yesterday! Plan to spend another hour or two on that, today, too.
My back is better, today, thank you. :)
I'm glad the river level has not risen anymore! Hope you get called for your booster, soon. I am planning to get mine, sometime this month.

  5. I've never heard of a loquat fruit before. Do you eat them as they are, or do they need to be cooked? X

    1. You eat them as they are (but, I prefer to peel mine, first). However, I made jam with them, one year, when I had a big tree and a good crop of them. That big tree died and I'm growing two small plants that were given to me; it'll be a few years before they bear fruit, though.

  6. How has your electric bill been since you've been using the electric heater more often? I don't recall you saying how it's been affected.
I am like some of your other readers never having had a loquat.
Yes, there is absolutely a paper monster. It is not an urban myth.

    1. My electricity bill has been manageable! I get billed every 2 months and it is a combination bill for water, electricity, sewer services, and solid waste collection, with the charges for each portion listed separately. I'm allocated 1,000 kilo Watthours (kWh) of electricity at the Tier 1 rate (which is the lowest rate, which is $0.19/kWh currently) during each billing period. The last bill was for the period 1/20/23 - 3/22/23; I used 503 kWh of electricity and my bill was $109.55 . The previous billing period was from 11/17/22 to 1/20/23; my daughter was home for part of that period and I had used 703 kWh and my bill was for $152.88. Last year's electricity portion of my utilities bill had varied from a high of $227.49 (for the period 11/17/21 to 1/24/22; daughter was home and working from home during that period and I went a little over the Tier 1 allowance) to a low of $63.52 (for the period 9/20/22 to 11/17/22; it was fall and no fans, a/c, or heaters were needed). My electricity bill is usually highest in the winter billing period from November to January.
Aren't you glad you asked? LOL.

    3. I knew you would! :D I have tables for the past 5 years or so, showing each billing period's usage and billed amounts for gas, water, and electricity (need to update this year's table with the most current info.) Electricity rates have remained the most stable of the three.
