Friday's Activities

Voodoo Lily

I took another picture of the spent voodoo lily, today.  Even the spadix is hanging down, so, I doubt if there will be any seeds.  The leaves, too, look like they are drying up.  Looks like the plant is just about done for the year.  But the flower was lovely, wasn't it?

Elsewhere in the garden...

Peaches Ripening

The peaches are starting to ripen!  The individual fruits are on the small side, this year, but, I am looking forward to fresh peaches, soon!

Meanwhile, the blueberries are ripening, too!

Blueberries

As I mentioned in yesterday's post about having garden produce to pick, this was today's garden harvest:

Friday's Garden Harvest

Snow pea pods, a few broccoli side shoots, and blueberries (not counting the blueberries I ate while picking these!)
Washed and Sorted Out

I washed everything and sorted them out.  The blueberries were bagged up and frozen to be shared with my daughter when she comes home next (whenever that might be; probably not before Thanksgiving).  The broccoli and snow pea pods went into the fridge drawer, to be cooked over the weekend.

I also received more food from neighbor S, today - cookies, baklava, cheese filled puff pastries, and two slices of pizza.  Her mother-in-law's funeral will be next week; meanwhile, family and friends calling on them to condole are bringing more gifts of food than they can eat, so she's distributing the extras.  I will share some of the cookies and pastries with my friend R and gardener M.  I also froze some of the cookies to share with my daughter.

Brunch had been a bagel with cream cheese; dinner was the two slices of pizza that S gave me.  I had a cookie with my cup of tea in the evening.

Housework included cleaning out the fridge drawers: took everything out, washed the drawers, relined them with paper towels, and put everything back.  There was one dried out lemon that I put in the compost bin.  I also cleaned the shelving unit in my bathroom - it is a plastic shelving unit with 5 shelves.  I took everything off the shelves, removed the old wax paper I had used to line the shelves, washed the shelves, relined four of the shelves with recycled white paper that had been used as a filler in a package I had received and the fifth shelf with some leftover wrapping paper as I ran short of the white paper, and put everything back.  I checked to see if I could declutter anything, but, didn't find anything I wanted to declutter.   Items I store on those shelves include a package of toilet paper, the first aid kit, a box with Dancer's flea prevention medication, brush, and flea combs, a box with disinfectant wipes, a box of disinfectant sprays, and a basket of spare toiletries.

Today, I am grateful for:

- More treats from S!
- Garden harvests
- A working freezer
- Phone calls and emails from friends
- What I was able to accomplish in terms of housework

Today's joyful activity was picking blueberries.  I have three blueberry bushes growing in containers and they are providing me with some tasty treats!

M wasn't able to tend to the garden, today, and asked if he can do so tomorrow (Saturday) morning, instead.  So, plans for Saturday include, tending to the garden with M, finishing up the bathroom cleaning, and tidying the kitchen.

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for the weekend?

  1. The Voodoo Lily was a nice colour but a shame the flower didn't last for long. I'm very envious of your peaches and blueberries picked straight from your garden. Hew nice to have more food from your neighbour, will you be attending her mother-in-law's funeral next week?

    1. Yes, the voodoo lily was a three-day wonder, wasn't it? But, it was very attractive while it lasted.
You really can't get fruit any fresher than just picked from the garden!
It was lovely to receive more food from my neighbor. I don't know if I will attend the funeral, Eileen. She hasn't given me much information about the funeral, other than to say that it will be next Friday; most likely her sister-in-law (husband's sister) is in charge of making the arrangements. In any case, neighbor S knows that I am still not attending many gatherings.

  3. The peaches look great and your crop of blueberries is wonderful. I always love to see them in the stage when they are ripening, there are so many pretty colours together. That is good that you are able to share some of the extra food that S has passed on to you. People are so generous.
We have rain today, which is a blessing as the garden benefits. Forecast for tomorrow and Monday, the rest of our long weekend, is good, and not too hot. We are heading to visit our son and family in the morning.

I hope you have a wonderful visit with your son and family over the weekend. Have a safe drive there and back. I'm glad the weather will be nice over the weekend. :)

  4. Your garden harvest looks delightful! So do the peaches. There's not much better than fresh veg and fruit from ones own garden.

  8. What a nice harvest you got last Friday and look at all those peaches! Looks like you are headed for a nice peach harvest. I didn't realize you had 3 blueberry bushes in pots. Any plans to plant them? How old are they? It looks like this is going to be their year to produce.
That is so nice of neighbor S to pass along some of the food to you.

    1. It was a good harvest, wasn't it? The peaches are ripening very nicely and I think I'll be able to pick the first peach this weekend, if not sooner.
Yes, the blueberry bushes were bought about 3 years ago. They came in gallon sized pots and stayed in those pots for a year and then, we repotted them into the bigger pots in which the fruit trees (Asian pear, nectarine, plum, etc.) had come in. Earlier this year, M added more soil to the same pots. They seem to be thriving in that spot (by the railing along the side of the steps leading to the back sliding glass door) and I am not sure if they should be planted in the ground. I'll check with M and see what he has to say.
S is so generous. She offered me more food, just the other day, and I had to decline! I still have much of what she gave me (I have to ration my sweets intake due to health issues).

  9. I absolutely love that pic of the peaches. Sunshine in a fruit, in a photo!
Oh, wow wow wow to that abundance of blueberries! Not my favourite berry, but I know they are good for you!

PS. I am scrolling through your posts towards the newest and my ID is only recognised on some, but not all. Blogger moves in mysterious ways!
BUT ... that term "dashboard" has appeared again! When I am in another blog, but signed in, I can see my email address in the top right of the screen, then "dashboard", then "sign out". I just thought I would let you know, as you asked me about it recently. Maybe you will see it next time you are on someone else's blog?

    1. There's a newer photo of the peaches on the tree; they are almost ripe, now :)
The blueberries were requested by my daughter; she loves them. And of course, she's not here to enjoy them fresh (I freeze them for her).
Interesting about the "dashboard"! I went on your blog and yes, I see it there! I went on another blog and I didn't see the email and dashboard and sign out, but, I noticed it when I went to a different blog! How interesting! I will be looking out for that from now on!
