More Peach Canning on Saturday

Today, I peeled and sliced the last of the peaches I had picked; there were about 5 lbs. of peaches:

Sliced Peaches - the ripe peaches are pink tinged

Then, I made a medium sugar syrup and canned the peaches.  I was able to get 10 half-pint (8 oz.) jars of canned peaches:

Canned Peaches
These peaches are for my daughter and myself.  I hope they will keep well until I can share them with her.

That is more or less the last of this year's peach crop.  There are about four small peaches still left on the tree, that I will be eating fresh.

I managed to splash my inner forearm with hot water when removing the jars of canned peaches from the water bath, today.  Fortunately, I didn't scald myself.  But, I decided it was time to buy myself a proper pair of canning tongs!  I have been using a pair of regular tongs, used to turn food, to remove the jars.  Quite often, the jars will slip off although I have not broken a jar, yet.  I also don't have a wide-mouthed funnel to pour the hot jams and fruit, etc. into the jars.  I've just used a ladle and have managed to pour the prepared fruit and jam into the jars.  But, today, I ordered a canning tools kit, which includes a pair of tongs and a wide mouthed funnel.

For brunch, today, I had some of the frozen stringhoppers (rice noodles) I had bought with chicken curry and a potato curry with milk gravy:

Brunch: Stringhoppers, Chicken Curry, Potato Curry
After I made the potato curry, I thought I should have taken photos to show how I made it!  But, I forgot!  I peeled and cut two medium potatoes and boiled it in some water with onions, curry leaves, turmeric, sliced green chilies, and salt; then, added coconut milk and lemon juice.

Dinner was leftover kebabs from what neighbor S sent over, with a salad and corn:

Dinner: Kebabs, Salad, Corn
I put some of my peach chutney on the kebabs and it was delicious.  I had a little of the stewed peaches (the leftover from canning) for dessert.

Today, I am grateful for:
- The peach harvest
- Being able to preserve the peaches
- My hands didn't cramp while processing the peaches
- I didn't burn myself with the hot water
- Frozen stringhoppers

Plans for tomorrow (Sunday) include watering the garden.

How was your Saturday?  What are your plans for Sunday?

  1. Thank goodness you didn't scald yourself and I'm reassured by your decision to order a proper kit. If you are canning regularly then it will be well worth it. X

    1. Thank you, Jules. Yes, that's what I thought - that having proper equipment would be helpful and safer for me!

  2. I can't imagine trying to get canning jars out with regular tongs. I'm glad you've got some proper ones coming your way because you don't want any more burns.

    1. I had always used the regular tongs to get the jars out after sterilizing them, but, it was hard to get the filled jars out from the water bath. Having the proper equipment will help, I'm sure. :)

  3. That is an ambitious breakfast. I am a slice-of-toast kind of breakfast gal. lol Yours does look good!
Congrats on the peaches. I haven't canned in years and years. Too lazy in my dotage, I guess. lol Have a blessed Sunday- xo Diana

    1. Well, it was both breakfast and lunch, eaten in the afternoon. I rarely eat breakfast. I have a cup of tea when I wake up, but, the first meal of the day is eaten well after noon. Around 2:00 p.m. or so. Then, I have another cup of tea around 5:00 p.m. with a snack, sometimes. Dinner is usually eaten much later, around 8 or 9:00 p.m. Sometimes followed by a snack around midnight, since I rarely go to bed before 2:00 a.m. :)

Thank you! I often make jam and chutney, but, I don't usually can them. This year is really the first time I've canned fruit in syrup. We shall see how well it turned out, later, when we go to eat the canned peaches!

  4. My auntie canned some cherries once. She left them on the table and they toddled up to bed to be woken during the night by a huge explosion. So auntie and cousins rushed downstairs to see what had happened to find the kitchen was bright red with cherries and cherry juice dripping from the ceiling and down the walls. Once they'd finished laughing, the closed the door and went back to bed. Clean up started the next day and took ages ... the juice was absolutely everywhere!

Sleep tight! Hope you don't have any loud bangs during the night 😂

    1. Eek! Exploding jars! I've heard other horror stories like that, before, which is probably why I haven't canned, earlier. So, far, however, I haven't had any explosions and I'd like it to stay that way! LOL. I had one jar from yesterday's canning efforts refusing to seal properly, so, that jar is in the fridge and I will eat the contents in a few days.

  5. Your little tree has provided such a wealth of goodies ... you can have a 'taste of summer' during seasons when fruits are less plentiful- have you frozen any ... extremely yum too!
The 'littles' are keeping all of us busy- Kailyn's dad is having a few weeks of his vacation (it was 'use it or lose it') so a real trip wasn't smart, and Dana has been bringing Kailyn over to enjoy swimming with baby Jamie most days- keeps both of the 'littles' busy and they can each enjoy a buddy to play with- I think that Paige and Dana have had about as much fun as the toddler set has-
The time is coming this week for me to make some kind of decision about floors/walls at the house- stay tuned to see me change my mind a dozen times in the next few days-
Stay well- as always, fondest wishes-
    Barb

    1. My little peach tree has been a star performer, this year, hasn't it? I haven't frozen any of the peaches, this year. I only have the freezer that comes with the refrigerator - it's a side-by-side one and the freezer is ample enough for my needs, but, right now, it is crammed full with groceries. Apparently, I had a fear of running short of onions and tomatoes, because I've several bags of frozen onions and tomatoes! LOL.

Sounds like your daughters and granddaughters are enjoying being together and, I'm sure Dana and Paige are drawing some comfort being in each others company at this time and having you there is an added bonus.

Have fun with deciding on the walls and floors. You can always repaint the walls if you change your mind. Are you putting in carpets or wood floors? When I bought my house, it had carpets throughout. Several years later, I replaced the carpeting. Later, I removed all the carpets and refinished the hardwood floors.

Hope you have a safe week ahead of you and stay cool, too!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I, too, enjoy seeing what others are making for meals and often feel inspired to include those items in my own meal plans. Yes, I'm glad I didn't scald myself - that could have been a nasty burn! Having the proper equipment should help!

  7. I was thinking about the old days in North America when women did preserving throughout the summer when it was hot! There were no stores with canned fruits and vegetables so it was a matter of growing your own and fixing them by canning, salting or drying to provide food for the winter. Imagine getting to April or May in Canada or northern states and finding that the root cellar and pantry were almost empty! 😧 We are really spoiled with such variety of produce in the supermarket throughout the year, but I hope the good people who come to pick and pack the produce will still be able to do so during the pandemic and that they stay well.
I hardly slept all night. I gave up and took my pillow and a throw down to the couch and that didn't work so I ate a sinfully delicious chocolate popsicle and started a good mystery book! I think I finally got a couple of hours sleep when I went back up to bed.

    1. Yes, preserving food for the winter and early spring was a necessity back then, wasn't it? It was about all one had until the garden started to produce, again. Yes, we owe a lot to the people who keep the grocery stores supplied and enable us to get the groceries we need.

I'm sorry you couldn't fall asleep, last night. I do like your solution, though (popsicles and mysteries). :) Hope you have a better night, tonight.

  8. Good to hear you have put in the order for tools. You have other fruit trees on your property that will need attention when you go to harvest. It will be so much safer to be using the proper tongs, and the proper sized funnel will make things a lot easier when filling jars.

Well the peaches are done. You must be satisfied with everything you have accomplished. I hope you are enjoying a more relaxed Sunday.

    1. Yes, having the proper tools for the job will be helpful, I think. :)

I am very pleased with all the peach preservation I did. I'm taking it easy, today. I did a load of laundry and will put water to the garden, in a bit.

  9. You were smart to order the canning kit and get the right tools for the job. Especially now that you're becoming quite the canner. :)

Your potato curry looks good. I sometimes make a cauliflower and potato curry that is good.
    I love potatoes.

    1. LOL, yes, having the proper tools will help avoid silly accidents and, who knows, I might become more adventurous and try canning other things, too! :)

Potato and cauliflower go well together. I, too, love potatoes. I still have a little left from the 10 lb. bag I bought, but, might order another bag in my next grocery order. :)
