Wednesday Night Dinner Compliments of Neighbor S! |
But, I had just come in after putting water to the garden and was starting to cook a chicken curry for dinner (I thought I had another package of cooked chicken curry in the freezer, but, couldn't find it, so, I put some chicken drumsticks out to thaw, earlier in the day), when neighbor S called to ask if I'd like to have some dinner! Her daughter will bring some over to me. Of course, I accepted, gratefully!
A few minutes later, her daughter N brought over a feast! Hummus, scalloped potatoes, rice pilaf, lula kebabs (ground meat wrapped around skewers and grilled), roast pork, several pieces of a flat bread called lavash, and a cheese filled puff pastry triangle known as borek (a little like the curry puffs I made, but, with a cheese filling). Plus a piece of chocolate cake and several pieces of napoleons (puff pastry squares with a cream filling and powdered sugar on the top) for dessert! Oh, my!
N told me that it was her mother's birthday, so I called S and wished her. I wish I had known so I could have given her a card, at least. Well, I'll have to remedy that, in the next day or so.
My daughter loves hummus, so, I froze the hummus for her. Then, I enjoyed some of the food for my dinner and kept the rest in the fridge for another meal, or two. I put the chicken curry in the fridge, too. I think it will go well with the lavash flat bread for breakfast, tomorrow.
Have I mentioned how blessed I am to have such lovely neighbors and friends?
Happy birthday, S! Wish you all the best in good health and happiness.
That looks lovely. You do have such kind neighbours. Belated Birthday Wishes to S.
ReplyDeleteIt was all very tasty, especially the desserts! I will convey your wishes to S. :)
DeleteWow,what a feast, so yum!
ReplyDeleteIt really was a feast, Natalia. :)
DeleteThat was a feast! You do have thoughtful neighbors and you are a thoughtful neighbor to them.
ReplyDeleteI do have very thoughtful neighbors, Live and Learn, and I try to be a thoughtful neighbor in turn. It's what makes a neighborhood, isn't it? :)
Delete... and another day's meal plan bites the dust- whee! what a grand treat ... with such ample leftovers too- your friends/neighbors are so considerate, but I am sure it goes both ways, and you deserve the goodies that you receive-
ReplyDeleteKailyn successfully lost her tooth (without anyone having to try to rescue that 'little pearl' from the depths of the pool) and went home with visions of the tooth fairy's reward, and baby Jamie decided she had to be a 'skinny dipper' ... everytime we looked she was taking her bathing suit off- Kailyn was completely humiliated and finally told us that Jamie should never be allowed in public-
We just got a big basket of apples, so because I follow the 'monkey see, monkey do' principle, I am headed in to make chutney-my basic recipe is much like yours, but I use brown sugar and also add a little bit of either clove or allspice- with the apples I have here now, I am also going to add some dried golden raisins to the mixture- hope mine turns out as pretty to look at as yours-
Take care- as always, fondest thoughts-
Barb
Ha, ha, meal plans get put off at a drop of a hat when friends and neighbors bring dinner! I do try to be a considerate neighbor and friend, in return, but, I think, lately, I've been at the receiving end more than the other way round!
DeleteCongratulations to Kailyn on losing her tooth and hope the Tooth Fairy rewards her for all the tooth wiggling! Too funny about little Jamie skinny dipping and Kailyn's chagrin! :D
Ooh, yes, apple chutney with raisins! Several of my chutney recipes call for golden raisins which we called sultanas. My daughter doesn't like raisins, so I usually leave them out of my recipes. I'm sure your chutney will be delicious. :)
Wow everything sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteYou have amazing neighbors and friends.
Everything was delicious. I do have lovely neighbors and friends, don't I?
DeleteI think I might make some koththu roti with the lavash flat bread. It wasn't quite as popular when I lived in Sri Lanka (I left in 1973), but, on my last visit (which was back in 1990!) it seemed like one could get koththu roti everywhere!
You have really good neighbors. It warms my heart that they look out for you and share their yummy food. Wish I had neighbors like that. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteCali G
Yes, I am very blessed to have caring neighbors. I wish everyone had good neighbors. Thank you for stopping by and commenting, Cali G.
DeleteHow lovely to be able to share, unexpectedly, in a birthday feast! I'm glad you have great neighbours and friends to look after you and change your weekly meal plan for you. :D
ReplyDeleteI made pancakes for breakfast, I have a system now where I mix the dry ingredients the night before to save time! Later I set to and made some old-fashioned oatmeal bread from. It sounded a bit easier than the regular bread recipes but did involve kneading for 10 minutes unlike my previous raisin bread recipe. I halved the recipe, too, as I didn't have enough pans for 4 loaves and I wanted to be sure it was okay. Well, the results were great. A bit strong on the molasses but good to eat. I think mixing and kneading twice as much might have been hard.
It was wonderful to be able to participate in the birthday feast, Bushlady, especially since it is different from what I normally make for myself. I can be very flexible with the meal plan! LOL.
DeleteGood idea to mix the dry ingredients for the pancakes the night before. I know some people mix up a batch of the dry ingredients and store it. I cheat and use a boxed mix! Unless I make the thin crepes-type pancakes.
Your oatmeal bread sounds great! Glad you halved the recipe. I still don't have any yeast, although friend R said she will share some of what she was able to get. I do have some frozen bread dough, but, I am keeping that in reserve!
Oh Yum - such good neighbours!
ReplyDeleteThey really are the best! Always there to lend a helping hand.
DeleteWell since you've started your meal planning, you've had quite the outside effort to keep you off schedule lol
ReplyDeleteWhich is just wonderful :)
What a feast of wonderful food.
And Napoleons too - Yum!
Big happy birthday wishes to neighbor S
Ha, ha, maybe I should have started meal planning earlier! :D My meal plans are flexible and friends and neighbors bringing me meals is the best possible reason to change the meal plan!
DeleteEverything was delicious, but, the Napoleons are my favorite!
I will convey your wishes to S. :)
Another lovely gesture from your neighbour, and what a feast! X
ReplyDeleteYes and I'm making inroads into the food! LOL. I froze some of the kebabs she gave me, but, I still have two in the fridge; I think I might have them for my dinner, tonight. :)
DeleteIt's been a few days now, so I will ask you if you have made a notation of S's birthday in your calendar yet. You will want to be ready next year when her birthday rolls around again. I keep a birthday (perpetual) calendar with my address book and stamps. As I learn of someone's birthday, I make a note. That way I hope to be more on top of things.
ReplyDeleteYummy meal. I hope someone made all that food for S, and that she didn't have to make her own birthday dinner.
Um, I have now made a note of her birthday on my calendar! LOL. My mother had a little book in which she noted people's birthdays. I can see that I need to do something like that, myself.
DeleteI think that much of the food was catered, although S or her mother might have prepared some of the side dishes. :)
