The Weekend in Review

Saturday, I had a relaxed morning and afternoon and I made another "impossible" card, a belated birthday card for my neighbor T, whose birthday was last week:

Birthday Card

Then, in the evening, we set out to go to the Route 66/66th birthday party.  Party started at 6:00 p.m. according to the invitation, but daughter and I were going with my cousin P and her daughter and cousin said we'll leave at 6:00 p.m. and I was fine with that.  On the way, just before we got on the freeway, I treated cousin's daughter and mine to iced coffees from their favorite coffee shop, which was conveniently located next to the freeway entrance!

Cousin's daughter S was driving their car.  When we had gone about 15 miles or so, the car radiator started overheating.  S managed to pull off to the side of the freeway, safely, and we called the auto club and a tow truck came out.  Cousin and I both had the Automobile Club coverage, but she only had a regular membership, which pays for free towing up to 7 miles.  So, I used my card, instead, since I have the extended roadside assistance, which provides the added coverage of free towing up to 100 miles.  But the tow truck could take only 2 passengers and they didn't have a 4 passenger tow truck available.  So, daughter downloaded an app for a rideshare service to her phone (and cousin's daughter forwarded her a discount code which gave a $5 discount off the ride) and we got a ride home while cousin and her daughter got their car towed.   Daughter and I got home first, a little after 8:00 p.m.  That was my first experience with calling for a ride!  It cost us $15 with the $5 discount applied.

Cousin's daughter texted to ask if we still wanted to go to the party and I said not particularly, but, I'll treat us to dinner at a favorite restaurant, since we were all dressed up, anyway.  But cousin wanted to go to the party, so we decided we will go in my car.  So, at around 8:30 p.m., we set out, again!  I drove us there and we got there a little after 9:30 p.m.  We got there just in time for the cutting of the birthday cake!  The  others had already eaten dinner, but there was plenty of dinner available, so we had dinner and the girls danced a bit.  We were there till 11:00 p.m., then, I suggested we leave (invitation said the party was till 11:30 p.m. and people were starting to leave).  Cousin's daughter drove my car on the way back, so she and my daughter sat in the front while my cousin and I sat in the back.  We are calling the whole experience more family bonding time!

Today, daughter had arranged to meet with two of her friends to see a movie, so I dropped her off at the movie theater at 10:00 a.m.  Then, I did grocery shopping (came to $34.45; I will do a separate post) and put gas to the car (came to $37.17).  I called friend R to ask if she needed anything from the grocery store, but she said she didn't need anything.  After I came home, I called friend A to check on her and her family and then, neighbor T called for our weekly Sunday chat.

Around 2:30 p.m., cousin P came over and I drove us to the monthly rosary prayer gathering, picking daughter up from the mall, on the way.  We had been asked to come at 3:30 p.m., and we were there at 3:32 p.m.  Then, we waited for another 30 minutes or so for some late arrivals!  But, finally, everyone was there and prayers were said and a late lunch/early dinner was served.

We left the prayer gathering around 6:00 p.m. and got home around 7:00 p.m.  I rested a bit and then, changed my bed sheets, did a load of laundry, did the dishes, and cooked the fish and the beef I had bought in the morning.  Daughter will take some of it back with her (along with some of the fruits and vegetables I bought).

This weekend, I was grateful for:

  1. What an eventful evening. Your card certainly came in useful - I'm not sure how 7 miles cover would be of much benefit really unless you broke down at the end of the road. I bet your cousin and daughter were glad they'd offered you a lift :)

I have a list as long as my arm of things to do but I always find it hard to get on with stuff when it's school holidays, so I'm biding my time and hopefully when everybody is back in their routine I'll still have some motivation to get on with things.

Hope you are keeping well. I've hardly visited blogs at all this summer, another thing I'm looking forward to getting back into come September. xx

    1. Hi Suzanne, yes, it was an eventful evening! I agree, 7 miles of towing is good only if you are willing to have the car towed to the nearest car mechanic's shop (and, I doubt if any place was open at that time on a Saturday evening). But cousin and her daughter wanted the car towed to their house.

I've been checking your Snapshots blog and I can see that you've had a busy summer! Enjoy the children's time off and start on your list in September. The work will wait! :)

  2. Glad to hear you got back safely after the problems with your cousin's car. I hope whatever was wrong with it wasn't too expensive to repair.

Are you feeling fully recovered from your recent medical prodecures?

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I know my cousin is hoping the car repair won't be expensive.

Yes, thank you, I am feeling quite recovered now. :)

    1. It was a busy weekend, but it was fun, too, once the excitement of the car was sorted out! I now know to suggest we take my car when we go somewhere in the future!

  4. Another stunning birthday card. Wow! What a weekend you've had! Lots of fun and excitement. Thankfully, not all your week-ends are that exciting. Also, if you are going to be stranded somewhere, it is good that you were surrounded with others. I would hate to be faced with the stress of all that by myself, or even with just your daughter. Remarkably, you were able to help out family by carrying extra coverage through your roadside assistance. What a blessing. I was glad to hear that you made it to the party anyways. I'm sure it must have relieved some of the stress by talking and laughing about it with others. (I am probably projecting my own fears into the situation here. Being stranded with my car would be almost terrifying to me) Glad that everything worked out.

Sunday was another crazy busy day with the prayer gathering, shopping, and MORE laundry. Good thing you are still on holidays. Woohoo.

    1. Thank you, Susan. Yes, I was glad that cousin's daughter wasn't on her own when the car got overheated. I've been in that situation, myself (several years ago) and I know I got very flustered! I'm also glad that I was able to help out with my card. I think I've convinced my cousin that she needs the extended roadside assistance, herself. Yes, it costs more and I know money is tight for her, but I also know that she has areas where she can economize in order to pay for the extra coverage (I've told her this, before). I get very stressed when there is any kind of car trouble!

    1. Yes, it was a full weekend! But the parties and family get togethers were lovely. Now, there will be a bit of a break until later in September. :)

  6. Ha! That's really an eventful evening. I'm glad you had the extended roadside assistance. I have the basic one, so maybe I should consider changing it. On the other hand I don't often drive too far from home. :)

    1. Nil, if you don't drive that far from home and your car is fairly reliable, then, you might not need the extended service. See how much more the cost is, weigh the pros and cons and then, make the decision that seems more sensible to you.

  7. That card is lovely! What an adventure you had but it ended well. Your cousin was lucky that you had the extended insurance, sometimes it pays to pay that extra amount. My weekend was good, on Sunday a friend came around and we did some gardening and I cooked a nice meal for us.

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I'm glad I was able to help her out. I'm glad, too, that you had a good weekend, with a friend coming over on Sunday. I'm waiting until it cools off a bit more to do some gardening, myself. :)

  8. The cards are beautiful, Bless! And what an adventure your day turned out to be. I'm about to up my autoclub coverage to include the longer range towing as this is now the third story in about 3 weeks I've heard of people needing the longer towing service. It's been in the back of my mind to do anyway, but apparently the universe decided I needed a push to get it done! Glad you were all ok and managed to have a lovely time together despite the excitement.

    1. Thank you, Laura. Yes, it was a bit of an adventure! If you regularly drive more than 7 miles from your home, then, I would recommend the extended towing coverage, especially if you drive an older car.
