Pi Day!

Today, March 14 (or 3/14), is pi day because 3.14 is the value of pi!  And pi day is celebrated with pie, of course!  I briefly considered making a pie in honor of pi day, but decided not to.  It seemed more work than I wanted to do, especially with only myself to eat it.

Today was another, rather relaxed day.  I slept in again (for some reason, my alarm clock, A.K.A. Dancer, didn't wake me up at 7 a.m. for his breakfast!).  It was OK to sleep in because I didn't have to go anywhere.

It was a cloudy, overcast morning, but we never did receive the rain that was forecasted for last night/early this morning.  Maybe it rained in some other areas, but we didn't get any where I live.  Later in the afternoon, however, the clouds cleared and it turned out to be a sunny, warm day.

After my morning cup of tea, I went on-line for a bit, and then, settled down to do some office work.
Later in the afternoon, I did a load of laundry and, as usual, hung it up inside the house on clothes hangers and a wire clothes dryer/airer to dry.  I am drying my laundry this way partly as a frugal, environmentally friendly way to dry the laundry and partly because my tumble dryer doesn't heat up and I haven't got it repaired or replaced!

Still later, I sewed.  I've set up my sewing machine, so I am working on the quilt that is one of my unfinished projects.   It's sewn using a method called "Mile a Minute" where pieces of fabric are sewn in a random manner and then, a patch is cut to your desired size.  I am cutting squares that are 6 1/2 inches on each side.  I am using up the bag of tiny scraps of leftover fabric from various other projects.  The majority of these scraps are too small to be used for anything else.  I have decided that this will be my "Mountain Climbing" quilt.

In the evening, I video chatted with daughter and spoke on the phone with one of my aunts.

Tomorrow, I have to go for a blood test in the morning.  More office work in the afternoon and maybe more sewing.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Being able to sleep in!
- A sunny, warm day.
- Time to sew.
- Being able to air dry the laundry.
- Video chatting with daughter.

How was your Monday?  Did you have pie to celebrate pi day?

  1. No pie for pi day. I'm not big on pie and the thought never occured to me. I still don't have my dryer fixed either. I have a wire drying rack, a garment rack I hang shirts on, a tension curtain rod in a doorway to put stuff on, and if there is anything else, I just find somewhere to put them. The other day the husband said, you know, I don't even miss the dryer, we don't need it. To which I pointed out that's because you don't do any of the laundry! But seriously, the only thing I miss is soft towels, its remarkably easy to live without a dryer.

    1. I've read that 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse water will help soften the towels, but I haven't tried it. I'm OK with the towels, but my daughter misses the soft, fluffy towels. I miss the dryer when I have to dry my big quilts - my wire rack is too small for them and I have to wait until we have those super hot days in the summer to make sure they dry all the way through. Otherwise, as you say, it's quite easy to live without a dryer.

  2. I could live without my dishwasher easier and my kitchen would be cleaner because I would wash as I cooked. Like my mom taught me. I don't like laundry hanging everywhere.

    1. I have a dishwasher which I hardly ever use! Daughter, too, has a dishwasher in her apartment which she has never used!

    2. I think dishwashers need to be run occasionally to keep them clean and in good working order. There's something about the hum of my washing machine, dryer and dishwasher that gets me in the frame of mind to do housework.

    3. So I've been told; I collect the dishes for a couple of days every so often and run the dishwasher. But, very often, even a couple of days' worth of dishes don't make a full load.

  3. I never thought about the 14th March being Pi day, but I'm often conscious that the 15th is the Ides of March, so keep all your daggers hidden! :D

One thing I don't mind about winter is not having to hang clothes outside and then watch the weather ready to rush them back in the house. I can put things on the line and wooden clothes dryers in the basement and forget all about them. I generally put the towels in the dryer afterwards for about 10 minutes on cold setting, just to fluff them a little.

Scrap quilts are fun. I have a random patch quilt, too. I once made a large pillow cover that has an elongated diamond in each square, flanked by strips. One end of the diamond is a right-angle so that it fits in the corner of each square with the long point reaching the other corner. Then the square corners can meet forming a 4 pointed star and of course you can multiply these sets of 4 squares. Generally the "diamond" piece remains the same colour.

    1. "Beware the Ides of March!" LOL. It's also the birthday of one of my cousins.

Your elongated diamond pillow cover sounds like a lovely design. All the quilts I've ever made have been scrap quilts! Using up remnants of fabric from various other sewing projects. I might buy fabric for background squares, sashing, or the borders, etc., but the patchwork part is usually leftover fabric.

Hope spring is on its way, over there.

  4. Your mountain climbing quilt is going to be beautiful, I love all the different colors.
I hang a lot of my clothes both inside and outside. I don't mind it at all. But, it is nice to have a dryer in the winter months.
    Have a great week.

    1. Thank you, Judy. I like this sort of piecing because I don't have to worry about points meeting and it is fairly fast! Faster than my hexagon quilt! I needed a change of pace.

A working dryer is a wonderful thing, especially in the winter. :)

  5. Never heard of that! I suppose here, pi day would have to be 31st April, as we put the day and month the other way around. But since there's no such date... No pie!

    1. Oh, no! No pie! That's sad! LOL. We didn't have a pi day when I was growing up in Sri Lanka, either, because we followed the British way of writing dates. I used to get very confused with the dates when I first came here!
