Sunny Thursday

Mama Duck and Ducklings

Daughter went up to the roof garden on the 5th floor of her office building to have her lunch and she spotted a mama duck (on the corner of the raised flower bed) and her ducklings (all huddled in the corner by the door)!  According to my daughter, there is no water feature up on the roof garden.  Wonder what will happen when it is time for the ducklings to learn how to swim!

Today was a sunny, warm day, with an afternoon high of 80F.  Very pleasant weather.

I had my doctor's appointment scheduled for 12:00 noon, today.  I called the clinic at 10:00 a.m. to double check and confirm the appointment.  I got to the appointment in good time and the appointment went quite well.  The good news is most of my lab work had very good results (I was especially pleased with my Hemoglobin A1c results), there were one or two that were borderline/a bit higher than normal, but, according to the doctor, nothing to be too concerned about and nothing that can't be taken care of with diet modifications, an increase in activity, and a reduction in weight!  Where have I heard that before?

Initially, I had thought I'll treat myself to some fast food on my way home, but, I actually didn't want to get any, today!  Instead, I came home and made myself a tuna salad sandwich, followed by a freshly picked peach!   Dinner was rice, baked fish fillets, and green peas.

I did a load of laundry in the afternoon, but, other than that, I relaxed.  I didn't feel like doing housework, today, so gave myself the day off!  I will catch up on the daily cleaning, tomorrow!

Today, I am grateful for:
- A safe drive to the clinic and back
- Good lab test results
- Free parking
- Working appliances
- Chats with family and friends

Today's joyful activity was going over the lab test results with my doctor!

How was your Thursday?  What are your plans for Friday?

  1. It's always nice when you have a doctor's appointment when they say there's nothing to be concerned about. I wonder if someone should try to relocate the ducks? Or maybe when they can all fly, they will fly away and find some water.

    1. I had been rather dreading this appointment, but, most of the results were fine; I need not have worried! :)
I am hoping that the building management will contact their local animal control to relocate the ducks to a park with a pond or something.

  2. Though I have never seen them I know the ducks live on the roof of the Peabody hotel in Memphis. But they have a fountain on the roof and also the fountain in the lobby for their water needs.

    1. My daughter said that some people have left bowls of water for them for drinking, but, they need at least a kid's pool or something for swimming! Most public fountains, at least in the City of Los Angeles, have been turned off/emptied due to water conservation efforts, and private fountains have to comply with certain requirements such as recirculating the water, etc. Not sure what they do up in the Bay Area. But, hopefully, they can relocate Mama duck and babies to a nearby body of water!

  3. Sometimes wildlife do the strangest things. I wonder if the ducklings are thinking that Mama has gone nuts, and let's get out when the door opens and get ourselves a pond somewhere!
So good to learn that your appointment went well. I have to chuckle that you decided to forgo any fast food pickup on the way home. I'm like that with a dental cleaning - not wanting to eat anything sticky and sweet, (for a very short time)!
Today was my friend's funeral and the church was full. It was good to meet some of her beloved family that I had heard about. I went in to the lunch room, kept my mask on and visited but didn't stay for any food. It was pouring with rain so I went straight home and prepared lunch for myself and DH. There was no way I wanted to shop for groceries or even go into the takeout. With the windshield wipers going full, it was still limited visibility on the highway. I was just so thankful that we didn't have this when we were down at our son's.

    1. I suppose Mama duck thought the roof garden was a good spot as it was relatively predator free! Only a bunch of people looking on and oohing and aahing! :D Maybe building management can relocate the duck family to a better spot; there is a rather large lake not too far away.

Thank you, I was very pleased to get the lab results, this time! Yes, I decided I didn't really want any fast food, this time around. I still have half of that pizza I bought earlier, in the freezer, if I really wanted something.

I'm sure your friend's family appreciated you being at her funeral, Bushlady, and I'm glad you kept your mask on. One can't be too careful, these days. Glad you had a safe drive home in the pouring rain! I dislike driving in the rain. Hope you have some pleasant weather over the weekend.

  4. Glad your results were good! But I dread to think what mine must be like, after you resisted the Rose's the other day and left them all for me to eat... I told you I had no willpower!
As for mama duck, what was she thinking! They have nowhere to swim, and the first flying lesson will be at vertiginous heights! I hope someone will take them to the park before there are any casualties. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. I had been a bit worried about my test results!
Mama duck was probably thinking the roof garden was a safe, predator free place for her babies. There is a large lake, not too far from the building, and she is probably able to fly back and forth without any problems; I guess she didn't think if the babies could manage! I hope the building management will relocate the ducklings.

  5. That's good news at the doctors. Those ducklings look so sweet - I hope your daughter will be able to keep up with what they do.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. :) The ducklings are cute, aren't they? I do hope they will be relocated, safely, to the nearby lake! I'll ask my daughter for an update, when she goes into the office, next week. :)

  6. Wonder if there will be a duck walk through the building and down the elevator soon? ๐Ÿ™ƒ Do the ducklings learn to fly before swimming? Mama duck might have been thinking ahead! :-)

Glad your test results were good! Now you just have to focus on your "reasonable" lifestyle to keep everything balanced. That's what I always tell my doctor when she goes too far with recommendations. Other than B-Complex, which I have to supplement throughout the year and Vitamin D (plus Vitamin K), which are summer supplements for me, my semi-annual checks are well within range.

As s gardener friend often says, "Go stand in the sun on June 22nd at 2:00 p.m. and see how you like it!" It's her consistent response when people whine about plants not doing well or dying in our low desert summerd! ๐Ÿ™ƒ

    1. Oh, wouldn't that be something to see? A parade of ducks! :D I always thought that ducklings learned to swim before they learned to fly! I couldn't tell from the photo, but, Mama duck did look like a mallard to me and I've read that mallard ducks will, sometimes, nest in trees and tall buildings; but, if they are in tall buildings, ducklings should be helped to get to a pond or other body of water within about 24 hours. I do hope that building management or maintenance can get those ducklings to water!
Thank you; yes, I need to work on my lifestyle changes to strive for a healthier lifestyle. :) It's all a balancing act, isn't it?
I like your friend's saying! Of course, over here, in southern California, August and September can be hotter than even June! :)

    1. Thank you, Sharon. I guess mama duck thought it was a safe spot in which to nest; now the question is, how to get those ducklings to water, the poor things.

  8. Great news about your test results.

When I worked in the Civil Service there was a family of ducks that nested in an enclosed garden with no access to water so they were fed and provided with water by a rota of staff. On advice from the RSPCA the staff provided a child's paddling pool filled with water for them. When the chicks had grown enough the RSPCA moved them to a more suitable site by the river.

    1. Thank you, Eileen. :)
I am hoping that the building management or maintenance crew provided the ducklings with a wading pool or contacted wildlife management or some such service to find out what should be done for the ducklings. There is a lake a few blocks away and that's probably where they should be relocated to, once they are bigger. My daughter doesn't return to the office until Wednesday, so she has no idea what, if anything, has been done about the ducklings. I hope they are OK!

  9. I'm glad your doctor's appointment went well. It's a good feeling when that happens :)
Why is it always about diet, exercise and weight?
    (for me too!)

  10. Glad you got good test results, and good luck with the little adjustments you may need to make. It sounds a lot like what my doctor tells me all the time - everything would automatically improve with just a 10 pound weight loss. I managed it several years back and it did indeed work. But the pandemic meant it has all come back.
