Peach Topping |
Today, I made a batch of peach topping. Yes, that's just what it is! I might have started out trying to make jam, similar to my "No Waste Peach Jam", but, the mixture would not set (I added less sugar than I normally add for making jam; maybe I should have added some powdered pectin to offset the reduced sugar) and I was not willing to unseal the jars and boil it all, again. So, I am calling it peach topping for pouring over ice cream, waffles, pancakes, etc., or stirring into plain yogurt! I made nine half-pint jars and the last little bit that was leftover was poured into another jar and kept in the fridge. Several of the jars will be given to family and friends.
It was a sunny and slightly warmer (a high of 79F) day, today. I spent a quiet, relaxed morning, made the peach topping in the afternoon, chatted on the phone with neighbor T, with aunt C, and friend R, watched the news, watered the back garden in the evening, and video chatted with my daughter.
Daughter went to her favorite Japanese store, today, and bought several cherry blossom themed items for her apartment:
Daughter's Cherry Blossom-Themed Purchases |
She bought a wash cloth, two kitchen towels, two garlands, an embroidered handkerchief, a little bowl with gold colored cherry blossoms, a fabric "tapestry"/wall hanging of a cherry tree in bloom, and a table cover.
Today, I am grateful for:
- 9 jars of peach topping
- Water for the garden
- Sunny days
- Keeping in touch with family and friends
- Seedlings popping up in the garden
Today's joyful activity was making peach topping!
Tomorrow (Monday) is Memorial Day, here, in the US. I have been invited to lunch at cousin V's; another cousin is visiting from Australia and is staying with V for a few days. V texted me earlier, asking if I would be comfortable going out to eat or should she bring the food home to eat in; I texted back saying it would be great if she could bring the food home because I was not comfortable going out. Just going to my cousin's to have lunch with the family is already pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone!
How was your Sunday? What are your plans for Monday?
Peach topping sounds like a perfect solution, plus it gives you more options of using, plus you made it with peaches you grew, it's perfection in any form :) Pretty cherry blossom purchases by your daughter; IMO, anything pink is perfect :)
ReplyDeleteYes, made with homegrown peaches. :) I'll make a batch of jam with the rest of the peaches that are still on the tree. My daughter sent me photos of her apartment with the cherry blossom items spread out and it looks very pretty and pink! :D
DeleteThe peach topping sounds delicious. I'm thinking about some on vanilla ice cream right now. Yum! Also, I like the cheerful, cherry things your daughter got.
ReplyDeleteI think it will be good with ice cream or on waffles. I had some on a slice of buttered toast and that was good, too, but, the topping was a bit too runny to be considered a jam.
DeleteMy daughter loves cherry blossoms and was happy to find these items (most of which were under $2 each) to brighten up her apartment. :)
The thought of home made peach topping poured over ice cream is making me hungry. It sounds divine,
ReplyDeleteI need to buy some vanilla ice cream to go with my peach topping! :)
DeletePeach topping sounds like a great addition to any pantry, wonderful for all kinds of delicious treats! Your daughter's apartment will be pretty with her cherry blossom theme.
ReplyDeleteToday I think the pollen must be more or less finished, so I will clean the furniture in the gazebo and put out the tablecloth with the plastic cover over it. I have some new chair pads, too but I may just bring them out when needed. It doesn't take long for things to get ruined by something when you are not watching!
Thank you, Bushlady. I think it will work well as a topping or a glaze. :) My daughter has always loved cherry blossoms, so she was very happy to find these items. :)
DeleteSounds like you are going to be ready for summer meals out in the gazebo before long. Yes, bringing the chair pads out as needed makes sense. :)
Peach topping sounds delightful and a creative marketing of jam that wouldn't set! I'd probably enjoy that more than jam.
ReplyDeleteDaughter's cherry blossom purchases are really pretty and will brighten up her apartment.
I hope you have a lovely meal with cousin V and your other cousin from Australia. I don't know if it is appropriate to wish you a Happy Memorial Day because of the events that necessitate a day for remembrance, but I hope you have a lovely day.
I thought it was a good way to salvage the non-setting jam! :D My daughter, too, will probably prefer the topping to jam! Most jams are too sweet for her taste. She has decorated her apartment with her purchases and was very pleased with her efforts! :)
DeleteThank you; I did enjoy the meal with my cousins and seeing them again. I am still not very comfortable with being unmasked among people, though.
Peach topping for ice cream and yogurt sounds lovely.I must say all your daughter's cherry blossom purchases are very, very nice. It will be good for you to be brought food to eat at home but such a shame you don't feel comfortable eating out yet, I do understand.
ReplyDeleteI have a phone consultation with a doctor tomorrow and that will hopefully sort some health issues for me.
I need to order some plain yogurt and vanilla ice cream, to try out the peach topping! :D My daughter has put in a request for waffles when she next visits, to have with the peach topping! :D
DeleteThank you, Eileen; my daughter loves cherry blossoms, so, she's happy she found these items (they were all reasonably priced, too).
It was kind of my cousins to accommodate my unwillingness to go out to eat. I am, to be quite honest, not comfortable going out unless absolutely necessary. On Friday, our county's new Covid cases numbered 5,800. Admittedly, the county is one of the largest and most populous one in the state, but, still, that is beyond my comfort zone!
I do hope that your phone consultation with the doctor goes well and your health issues will be sorted. Sending you good vibes and wishes for good health.
Peach topping sounds delicious - I surely would be topping many things with it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Memorial Day. We usually cook traditional cookout food on the grill but are having salmon (cooked inside) instead. We both were in the mood for some salmon. And no, it was not on sale :(
The things your daughter bought at the Japanese store are so pretty!
Enjoy your lunch at cousin V's.
Peach topping sounds more intentional than failed jam, doesn't it? :D Salmon sounds like a nice meal to enjoy on Memorial Day, even if it wasn't on sale. It's good to splurge and enjoy something you feel like having, every so often. Cooking it at home was still probably less expensive than going out to eat. :)
DeleteThank you; she has been wanting to redecorate her apartment for some time, now, after being there for almost 8 years and she loves cherry blossoms. :)
Lunch with the cousins was good. I'll post about it, in a bit. :)
That peach topping sounds better than any jam and better than the canned peaches! I know that you will make the most of it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lyssa. I've had it stirred into yogurt and am looking forward to having it on waffles for breakfast one of these days. I also gave some of the jars as gifts for family, neighbors, and friends. :)
DeleteSeveral times I have accidentally made "toppings" or what we call thick syrup (jelly that failed to set) It is all good no matter how it comes out!
ReplyDeleteGlad that someone else has had similar mishaps in the kitchen! :D I thought that calling it peach topping was a good way to salvage the non-setting jam! :D It's not a fail unless you admit it to be, right? :D
DeleteSince making peach jam didn't work out, pouring your homemade peach topping over ice cream sounds just as good. Throw some pecans or walnuts on top and you're all set. We had peach cobbler last night with vanilla ice cream and it was delicious. Hope you enjoyed lunch with your cousins. As long as you masked up, except for eating, you should be okay. Denise
ReplyDeleteYum! Nothing as good as peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream! I think the peach topping with ice cream would be good, too. :) I did enjoy seeing my cousins and having lunch with them, thank you. :) Hope you've had a lovely Memorial Day weekend, Denise.
DeletePeach topping sounds delicious and I was just thinking how nice it would taste stirred into some yoghurt. Perhaps you could also freeze some and enjoy it as a sorbet. X
ReplyDeleteOoh, that sorbet sounds like a great idea!
DeleteI looked back at your "no waste" jam and giggled to myself that when you tried to make a topping you ended up with jam, and now when you planned to make jam you have a topping! I'm sure either is delicious and I am going to make a mental note of "topping" as a marketing strategy! I have made grape and apple gloop in the past - a jelly that refused to set. I ended up giving most of it away and re-making the rest, but G kept telling me to sell it as was and just advise people to stir it through yoghurt or fruit salad. Perhaps if it was actually labelled "topping" I might stand a chance of convincing people! (Or better still, I could make it properly in the first place!)
ReplyDeleteIt is rather ironic, isn't it? Set out to make a topping and end up with jam; set out to make jam and end up with a topping! :D I think "topping" or "sauce" would be a better label than "gloop"! :D
DeleteI didn't officially label it gloop!
DeleteI didn't think you actually did! :D
DeletePeach topping and cherry blossoms prints, are both on my list of favorites.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susanne. I like my peach topping and my daughter loves her cherry blossoms! :D
