Peachy Friday

Just Picked Peaches

I picked about two dozen ripe peaches, today.  There are perhaps another dozen or so peaches left on the tree and that is the extent of this year's peach harvest.  Nothing much, compared to previous years, but, I am grateful for each and every peach I am harvesting.  It is truly a blessing to be able to harvest fresh produce from the garden.  I plan to can these in a sugar syrup so that my daughter can enjoy them when she next visits.

Today has been a somewhat productive day.  I vacuumed the house in the late morning, put away the laundry from yesterday (I hung them up inside the house to dry, overnight), cleaned the stove vent hood, made some phone calls, checked on friend A, chatted with friend R, spoke with aunt C, chatted with neighbor T, cleaned the bathroom and Dancer's litter box, checked on the garden, and harvested the peaches (as well as some broccoli side shoots and a handful of blueberries).  M had requested the day off so he could enjoy a long weekend over Memorial Day; he had watered the garden on Wednesday and I think it can wait until Sunday to be watered, again.

I made a salad for brunch and had leftover pizza from the freezer for dinner.

Later, I video chatted with my daughter.

Today, I am grateful for:

- Peaches from the garden
- The rest of the garden produce - broccoli and blueberries, etc.
- Working appliances
- Chats with family and friends
- What I was able to accomplish

Today's joyful activity was picking peaches!

Today's Harvest

Plans for tomorrow include canning peaches!

How was your Friday?  What are your plans for Saturday?

  1. The peaches are beautiful. When we had a peach tree, the peaches were usually full of worms or the squirrels would take a couple of bites out of them before they were ripe. I think there's a reason that so many of our fruits and vegetables are grown in CA. :) I'm sure your daughter will appreciate the canned peaches on her next visit.

    1. They do look beautiful, don't they? I was worried that the birds will peck them, but, so far, they haven't! I think the garden cats keep the squirrels away! How is your little apple tree doing?

    2. It had blossoms for the first time this year and I see one tiny apple. It's a start. :)

    3. Yay! Yes, it is a start! :D Last year, I had one persimmon (no signs of any flowers this year). I also don't seem to have any nectarines on the new tree, this year (last year, when I planted it, it had two!). But, there are marble sized fruits on the Asian pear, tree!

  2. You have been busy, and all those peaches look so good and it's a lovely idea to can them so your daughter can enjoy them as well.

I'm having a quiet day at home. I've made a start on listing ideas for new plants (I have loads of ideas but not enough space for all of the plants on the list!) but have spent the last hour or so watching videos of the Depp/Heard trail on YouTube.

    1. The peaches do look good, don't they? Hope they taste good, too!
Sounds like you are having fun selecting the new plants. :) I am looking forward to seeing what you choose in the end. My new plants include the okra seedlings which have sprouted, the two volunteer tomato plants I have growing, and an apple seedling I started from a seed! I saved some papaya seeds, too, from the fruit I enjoyed earlier in the week - I plan to scatter the seeds in the back yard and see what happens!

  4. Beautiful peaches and other produce! I had the same problem as one of your commentors noted....we had peach trees once and the squirrels got every single peach...taking a bit out of each (when still green even) and wasting them! Andrea

    3. They don't make them like they used to, I guess.

  5. Those are beautiful peaches. We are not harvesting anything but cherry tomatoes right now, but there is a lot of summer waiting for things to grow.
I give up on fruit though. The squirrels have already eaten all the apples that were forming.

    1. Thank you, Anne. But, what I am finding out as I cut them is that in the majority of them, the seed has not formed properly and it is spoiled inside! But, the peach flesh is fine!
Summer is just beginning; I'm sure you'll be harvesting your beans and okra, etc., later. Oh, no! Naughty squirrels!

  6. Those peaches look perfect! It will be a while before the Ontario peaches are available in the stores!
I visited a friend this afternoon and took a wee bunch of wild flowers from the yard and 2 kinds of treats that I had made, plus a cookie for the dog. This is the dog that I have phone conversations with. My friend says that she will put the phone to his ear and then I say hello to him and he reacts! Sometimes it is fun to do silly things.

    1. Thank you, Bushlady. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving! Some of those perfect looking peaches were spoiling from inside out! A lot of their seeds or stones were hollow and black! I still managed to salvage enough of the flesh to can some of it.
I'm sure your friend appreciated the flowers as much as the treats you had made and the dog probably loved his cookie. Oh, that's too funny about speaking to the dog on the phone! That's a little like when my daughter and I video chat, she will talk to Dancer and he'll come up to the computer to meow at her! :D

  7. What a beautiful harvest picture with all those colors. I think the peach tree has produced well in it's short life.
You had a busy day on Friday and got a lot done.
I am headed outside in a few minutes to work in the yard for a bit. I want to get another bag of mulch done and I want to divide a sedum that is crowding out other plants an in my back fence bed. I will pot up what I divide and use it to decorate my patio.

    1. Thank you, Debra. Yes, the colors are pretty, aren't they? The peach tree has done well. Unfortunately, I am having a lot of what is called "split pit" - the stone or pit around the seed doesn't form properly. Some are split all the way to the top, near the stem, leaving an opening, others are split only on the inside. The outside of the fruit looks fine, though, and the flesh is OK to eat. I've been researching what is causing it - the fruit is ripening too fast - and the causes (overwatering, over thinning - although we didn't do any thinning, this year, etc.) Need to discuss it with M and see what he thinks.
Sounds like you're having a busy day, gardening! Enjoy!
