Mend on Saturday

Visible Mending

Saturday was a lovely warm day, with an afternoon high of 96F.  It was warm enough that I changed out of my cotton long sleeved blouse to a sleeveless blouse and removed the socks that I was wearing!  Of course, the fact that I felt warm enough to do so might also have something to do with the fact that I spent most of the afternoon with a comforter spread out on my lap as I sewed a border to conceal the frayed edge of the comforter:

Adding Borders

I watched cooking shows and news on TV while I sewed the borders.  I have now more or less completed all the items on my "brain dump" list that I posted a week ago, last Saturday!  I say 'more or less' because the second baby blanket has been started, but, not completed.  Which is fine, because it is not needed until mid-July.  On the whole, I am very pleased with what I was able to accomplish, during this week.

After I finished sewing the borders, I decided to mend a small hole that was on the back of one of my blouses.  I darned the hole, but, I didn't have the exact shade of thread, and it didn't look neat, so, I sewed around the hole with a button hole stitch and added some French knots around it.

Later in the evening, I watered the garden, both front and back, even though M had watered the back when he was here on Friday, mostly because the new seedlings he planted needed to be watered since it had been so warm during the day.

On Saturday, I was grateful for:
- Another sunny and warm day
- Water for the garden
- My thread stash
- Chatting with my daughter and friends
- What I was able to accomplish

Saturday's joyful activity was sewing.

Plans for Sunday include more sewing!

How was your Saturday?  How is your Sunday coming along?

  1. Good job getting through your list. Isn't it funny how a small tweak (making the list & transferring it from your brain to the paper) can propel you on and in a short time you have finished the things that were nagging at you.

I admire your finishing the mending. I have a cotton quilt (no batting) and the top is quite tattered. The fabric is fine, it's just coming apart where the pattern pieces were once joined. I started mending it back before Christmas then it got cold and I just put it on the bed! lol
This morning I took it off the bed because it's no longer needed and I thought, "I really should fix this thing." haha

    1. Thank you, Debra. I feel very happy with myself for getting that list done! Writing it all down helped to focus and prioritize. It also made it seem more manageable and not as overwhelming.

That mending was getting to me because I knew it shouldn't take too long to do if only I could just sit down and do it! In the end, it took me two afternoons, about 4 hours each afternoon, to sew it.
I hope you will be able to set aside a little time, each day, to mend your quilt. Maybe set aside 30 minutes each day, as you are doing with the weeding, to repair one patch at a time. :)

  2. Well done on completing your brain dump list. That method seems to have worked well for you doesn't it ... do you think you'll do another list in the same way?

I could do with some of your hot weather over here. I didn't sleep well, being kept awake by the noise of the rain hitting the roofing on the shed in the garden over the road from my bedroom window, so I'm overtired and can't get properly warm. It's only 18°C in the living room at the moment! I'm having a quiet day at home, reading, playing the piano and doing some family tree research.

    1. Thank you, Eileen; it worked very well for me and I feel very pleased with myself! :D Yes, I will do another similar list; last week's brain dump list was only a partial list because I wanted to keep it manageable. The next list will have a lot of paperwork-related tasks! But, I'm going to try to incorporate the tasks into my regular weekly routine and see how that goes.

Sorry to hear you've had a disturbed night and it's so cold this morning. I'm sending you some of the hot weather - it is almost 10 degrees cooler, today, than it was yesterday, though; only 87F, this afternoon. :) Hope you are enjoying your quiet day.

  3. I can see a new definition for a particular temperature - "warm enough for Bless to take her socks off!" It's very satisfying to mend something creatively, isn't it? We are still using the bath mats that I was able to bind when the edges were frayed.
We had rain this morning but not for too long and it had ended when I came out of church. DH and I went for our usual Sunday walk by the river and then came back for tea and a snack. We haven't eaten outside as the black flies are around and I didn't want to take everything to the gazebo as the pollen is around, too, and the chairs need cleaning. Soon the pollen will all be down and I will clean everything.and get set up in there.

    1. LOL, today was another sockless day, with a high of 87F. :D
I still haven't embraced the obviously visible mending (where they darn with contrasting colored threads), but, a little embroidery to embellish a tear is fine. Glad to hear that you are still using the bath mats that you mended.
Hope the rain helped to cool the weather a bit for you, without making it muggy. Glad you were able to enjoy your Sunday afternoon walk to the river and back. Sorry to hear that the black flies are back, though! I'm sure you are looking forward to eating in the gazebo, once the pollen count is down. :)
Hope you have a good start to your week, tomorrow, Bushlady.

    1. I like the heat. :) Which is why I am always so cold in the winter. Thank you! I didn't have the exact shade of thread to darn the hole without it being obvious, so a bit of embroidery to disguise it! I am very happy to get that brain dump list completed! I hope you had a lovely weekend, Eileen, and the week ahead will be a good one. :)

  5. Have you thought about taking one of your blouses or sweaters and sewing little flowers all over them? That would be so pretty.

    1. I've done that on a couple of my daughter's sweaters, but, not mine. I've another sweater - a cardigan, actually, that I knitted - that has the beginnings of a small tear needing to be mended; maybe I'll scatter some flowers on it! :)

  6. I love the embroidery around the darn. It looks so pretty. How can you be wearing socks in 90F heat? I would be flattened!!!

  7. Isn't it nice to complete a to-do list. I've gotten into making mine too long though, and am still working on one from the end of April.

    1. It feels great to have that list completed, Susanne. I purposefully kept my list to less than 10 items, so as not to get overwhelmed. I have another list I call my "mile long list" because that's just about how long that list is! :D

  8. Well done on finishing the brain dump list. I like how you made a feature of that mended hole. I had to laugh at you taking off your socks for the first time, as today I put on socks for the first time this winter.

    1. Thank you! I've already made another similar list! I keep forgetting that you are going into winter over there! Keep warm, Sharon! :)
