May Grocery Shopping - Part 1

Spaghetti Pasta

I did a grocery pick up, today.  I mostly wanted some fresh produce, but, chicken was on sale for $.99/lb. and I decided to stock up on chicken, condensed milk (at regular price), sugar (jam and chutney making season is just around the corner!) and pasta.  Celie had mentioned this pasta when I posted a photo of the cookies I had bought when I went to get my second booster shot (I was intrigued by the brand name).  The store website has them advertised for $.25 each, but, I was charged $.33 (which is the price on the website for other types of their pasta), but I am not going to complain about it.   $.33 for a 7 oz. packet comes to $.75/lb.  In comparison, the store brand costs $1.33/lb.

I bought:

2 trays Chicken drumsticks, 6.88 lb. @ $.99/lb. = $6.81

3 Bananas, 1+ lb. @ $.65/lb. = $0.79
2 Mangoes @1.00 = $2.00
5 Apples, 1.88 lbs. @ $1.49/lb. = $2.80

1 Lettuce = $1.49
2 lb. bag carrots = $1.99
1 Frozen Green peas, 12 oz. bag = $1.25

1 Whipped topping, store brand, 8 oz. container = $1.00

6 Condensed milk, store brand, 14 oz. cans, @ $1.79 = $10.74

1 loaf Bread, 20 oz. = $1.69

8 Spaghetti, 7 oz. packages, @ $.33 = $2.67

2 x 10 lb. bags Sugar, @ $5.39/bag = $10.78

Total (with coupons and sales) = $44.01

May grocery budget = $100
Spent to date = $44.01
Balance = $55.99

I repackaged the chicken drumsticks after I got home and froze the majority of them, keeping four drumsticks in the fridge to cook this weekend.

Have you gone grocery shopping yet, in May?

  1. It's best to stock up if you can afford to do so what with prices going up and shortages of some items. I've made a grocery order with a different supermarket this week taking advantage of a good saving on a first order but I did notice some items were more expensive than I usually pay but still a saving overall. I will revert back to my usual supermarket shop after that.

    1. That was my thinking, too, Eileen, that it was good to stock up now, when things are available and prices haven't increased, yet. Two of the items I ordered (corn starch/corn flour and a different type of bread) were both out of stock. That's good that you were able to still save money, overall, on this first order from a different store. :)

  2. I haven't been shopping yet but am getting to the stage where I need to. I need to finish off the freezer inventory and check stock of pantry items before I do another big shop though. Then I can have a mammoth batch cooking session and get back to being organised on the foodie things!

    1. Sounds like a plan to me, Eileen. :) I, too, did a freezer inventory and a partial pantry inventory before I put in my shopping order.

  3. Glad you managed to stock up on a few things. I have noticed that quite a few seemingly random items are going missing from the shelves. G was telling me that eggs will be in question and chicken will soon cost more than beef, what with Ukraine and the cost of feed and fertiliser rising/becoming scarce. Perhaps, to be on the safe side, we should all be planting 14 zucchini plants each, and eating the harvest at every meal! (BTW, in case you missed it in the papers, my freezer is now a courgette-free zone!)

    1. Thank you, Lady Ella. Yes, eggs have gone up in price here, too, but, I think that is due to several outbreaks of avian flu in poultry farms, resulting in the mass killing of chickens (and at least one reported outbreak in a turkey farm, too). Egg and poultry prices will be on the rise. We might all need to raise chickens and grow more zucchini! :D Congratulations on having a courgette-free freezer! I still have several packages of frozen zucchini and I planted 5 zucchini seedlings, on Wednesday!

  4. Compared to prices here, it looks like you got some decent bargains, and stocking up with sales is more important now than ever.

    1. Yes, you have to be on the lookout for those sales and take advantage of them if you can. :)

  5. That pasta price is great! You were smart to stock up and the 7 oz size is perfect for you.
It used to be (not that long ago) that the store brand pasta would go on sale a couple times a year at 2/$1.00 but I haven't seen that in ages.
In the winter there was a specially packaged (store brand) promotion with famous hockey players (funny lol) on the box. They marked the unsold boxes down to .66 and I bought a few of those but nothing low priced on pasta since then. I was happy to see the marked down pasta offered online. Often that sort of thing is on the store marked down rack only.
We have the same chicken sale this week with legs or thighs so I am getting a pack and will split it up for the freezer since the package is
    5 lbs.
Your out of stock items are interesting. The corn starch and and corn flour. Odd things to be out of. But who knows anymore.

    1. I remember when pasta used to go on sale for 2/$1.00! That's when I used to stock up! Wheat prices are going up due to the war in Ukraine and weather, elsewhere. So, anything made with wheat flour will go up, too. Check your Kroger store website to see if they carry this brand of pasta.
Corn starch (aka corn flour) - I ordered the store brand as it was cheaper than the brand name; I suspect they have the more popular name brand product available. The bread that I ordered was also a lower priced product. I think the store is no longer substituting more expensive products. I still have some corn starch; I'll try to reorder the store brand, next time, and if they are still out of stock, I might get a box of the brand name one.

  6. I've not seen the moderna spaghetti here! Only macaroni, shells, and the like. Our prices have gone up as well, now .49 cents a package! They jumped almost overnight. Everything is increasing, so stocking up is wise when you can get good prices.

    1. Their other pasta products were also $.33 when I looked. Definitely stock up when the prices are good (always assuming one has the extra money to stock up).

  7. The pasta looks like a great deal, and when you see a sale, you have to commit, especially at these times of rising prices.

    1. Thank you, Lyssa. I was down to my last two packets of spaghetti pasta (I had lasagna sheets and egg noodles, though), so it was time to stock up on spaghetti. It is always better to stock up when there is a sale, if possible. :)

  8. I wasnt going to do any shopping during May, but the grocery store that I do most of shopping has declared a price freeze on essential items till Christmas, so it is tempting to stock up some items as I suspect they go up with a bang when it ends. Good publicity stunt but it will help everyone weather our inflation.

    1. Oh, wow, that's a long period of time to freeze the price on essential items, but, what a wonderful thing to do! I'd definitely want to stock up on those items, to the extent that I can! :)
